Pitino: St John's Will Have Recruting Edge

There can be no doubt that Rick Pitino is a great bball coach.
Having said that he has never liked SJU, never done anything to help SJU, recruits NYC and I would never believe anything positive he has to say about SJU.
There must be a hidden motive for his praise of our program.
Truth be told we finally have a staff that sees the benefits of SJU and is recruiting better than any staff has ever done. That is all that should matter to SJU fans, the perception that our staff has of our school.

best recruiting staff Johnnie's have had.

Pretty sure Rick close with a fellow pony loving alum of ours.

Yes. And even the wonderful Louie would rarely go beyond the tri-state region. I am thrilled that this staff wants a good local kid along with those far away - likely the first time even SJU has had a roster with such diversity - Texas, Chicago, Detroit, France and…???

imo the best opportunity for a previous SJU coach to replicate what Coach Lavin and staff are doing was - Fran Fraschilla (doing a game on TV now) but of course he had issues that would not let him last in Queens.

all the best

Close? It is likely Pitino is not even close with his wife anymore, let alone another pony lover. I agree with North, Pitino has never been a St. John's fan. Yes, he is a great X&O coach and, like PMG said on JJ, some consider him the best college coach but I think Mark Few is probably just as good a coach but operates on a smaller stage in the northwest and Butler's coach is a true teacher of the game.

This [] close? Or (.....) close? Lol!

it's amazing how Pitino has become a spokesman for the league.

Which league, the ACC?

Slick Rick is a weasel and an opportunist. He learned from one of the best weasels in college basketball. He made his bones at Providence, and quickly abandoned them for bigger fish. The Knicks, Kentucky and now Louisville......whoever paid his ransom.
But, yes, he is a great basketball coach. I lost all respect for him when he got caught banging a MILF in the back of Luigi's and then trying to cover it up.....all while the misses was shopping on 5th Avenue. ...

Have you also lost all respect for Mark Jackson (a licensed minister, no less) for banging a stripper, the nude photos, etc.? Or does he get a pass because he's one of our all-time greats?

No. Not because he is a licensed phony minister (think Al Sharpton phony) but because Mark is in the professional ranks and coaches adults. He can screw all the hookers in Vegas for all I care. That is between him and his spouse.
I did not lose respect for Rick because he cheated on his wife but because he is "teaching" young teens the art of basketball and these kids look up to their coach and his image of integrity and honesty. He tarnished that image....publicly and there will always be that asterisk in his history.
High school and college coaches are still viewed as much "teachers" as coaches and such public indiscretion has a price attached.
Being a Hall of Fame coach does not get them passes either. That Jim Boeheim was in such public denial about the Fines was more about him defending his own image than that of Bernie Fine....or Mrs. Fine.

College basketball coaches at schools like Louisville are paid to teach basketball (not morals) and win. Not saying its the way it should be, buts it the way it is.

Of course they are paid..handsomely..to teach basketball. However, most sports-related contracts have morals clauses.
Because of Pitino's success at Louisville and the revenue its basketball program generates, Rick got a pass from a school whose coeds also send nude pictures to Playboy for their annual "college" issue. As Mike Maher would say...it is what it is.

You did????
Could you send me the link?

I might have the issue. LOL. It was an isssue about the whole Big East and had girls from each school. As I remember one of the St. John's girls was a Russian student. I remember reading in the post about the administration being upset. If you remember as St. John's started to go on the national stage as a power their was tremendous press that they had not seen in decades.
Even the Sport magazine piece, about paying the players, turned out to be the sripened which no one in the media understood.

CIrca early to mid 1980s, Sports Illustrated had an article "There's a Berry in the Bush" about SJU's eager pursuit of Walter the Truth Berry. I believe the Universisty of Georgia was in the recruiting picture.
