Pitino and Iona

It's funny, but we were all concerned that Pitino would take over NYC, build a powerhouse,  and leave us in the dust.

He still may build a very good team, but no one is even thinking about Iona right now.

When SJU is winning, we take the city by, umm, storm.

Agreed that if we're winning we'll always get top billing. But like in the early 80's under Valvano and Kennedy, Iona will also get publicity when they're winning. Especially with a lighting rod like Pitino at the helm. As Moose said, I wouldn't use current times as an indicator too much. It's Pitino's first year, it's gonna take him a little time to get things going, and they're not playing much.

In my opinion the BE should not have let them back in.

…………

The decision to include Yukon was made to leverage current media contracts.

Don't be naive. Conference expansion is always about money.  It was reported that UConn paid an entry fee to the Big East ($3.5 million).  TV partner Fox Sports pushed for Yukon to be included to increase viewership and rivalries.

The Fox/ Big East media contract proved to be undervalued for the Big East that provide solid viewership numbers.  The problem for the Big East was that its 2013 undervalued contract extended until 2026. The only way it's  contract could be opened back up for revaluation by Fox, is if there was a change in their membership.  Adding Yukon allowed the Big East to bring their contract up to market value based on the Big East’s performance on TV the past 5-6 years + Yukon's value. So that contract is thought to seriously, seriously jump in value.  And,Yukon is going to provide a significantly greater boon to the Big East  TV payout  b/c if you look at the historical ratings for basketball, the highest annual TV rating for most programs in the pre split Big East basketball were againstYukon. Yukon provides a disliked villain to the league which will boot TV ratings.

Adding Yukon was strictly a business decision.

Shocking that you wouild think that a decision in big time college athletics would be a business decision. Most are for the good of the student athletes. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

Anyone care to guess how far in the big dance Iona will go with Pitino. I predict he makes the sweet sixteen. I say this without seeing the match ups. Told you guys iona would prosper with Pitino. I thought he would have been a better hire than Anderson. But I will say Anderson has done better than I expected. But I dont like losing players on transfers

LOL! You sir, win the Internet today! Best post ever by maher!

Hard to imagine Iona winning any game. They will be matched up vs a team ranked about sixth in the country and all their wins this year including their league tournament were against teams probably in the two hundred fifty range.Their past history also indicates a quick bounce.
They won a tournament game back around 1980 which was taking back by the NCAA because of an ineligible player. Other that that game they have always lost their first game. They will be big underdogs so they might beat the point spread.

Agree with most of what you're saying, and don't expect them to do much in the tourney, but "past history" goes out the window with Pitino now at the helm.

Amazing that they were able to beat Niagara and Fairfield to get to the tournament

If I'm Pitt and I part ways with Capel, I'm calling Pitino.

Aside from that, Dee hid 99 percent of the season and then pops in with the shocking news that Pitino is a great coach. Shocked he didn't mention that Pope is Catholic and Kardashians are vapid.

*Sorry RMN, I'll behave.

I haven't paid attention to Iona. I was very surprised Pitino got them to The Tournament his first season. Covid cost all the teams a lot of practice time.

I agree that he'll move on to a bigger program within another year or two. Maybe sooner if Iona makes a run in the Tournament.

Not that it happens but , Pitino could fix Fordham in a short time period . I think . It depends on whether the Jesuits there are a little lenient on Admissions . The Pitino Rep is not tarnished among kids who want the next level . They figure Rick could get them there .  They will come .

No Pitino, we don't want to give Justin any reason to stay. /media/kunena/emoticons/cool.png

I don't think he was actually 100 percent lying. I don't think he is a candidate and I don't think he wants the IU job. But he said in another tweet he went back home to retire at a small Catholic university. He never said which one, and there are varying degrees of small.
