Thanks Monte.. memories for me and some food for thought on The Hawk and the F’ing over he went through and the great Wes Unseld, would his mix tape and size even get him a look in today’s game?[/quote]

Unseld was one tough dude. Maybe 6'4", and banged and held his own with Wilt, Willis, Thurmond, etc. Like me, you're old enough to remember hearing John Condon say "basket by All-CINNNdor." Great memories.

Yes, great memories, a much different game. My favorite player of all time is Clyde, hands down, but tried to pattern my play after Norm Van Lier, another very tough, very hard nosed player. Rebounders? Give me Unseld and Paul Silas, neither of whom could jump a lick but WANTED that ball.

And after grabbing defensive rebounds, nobody was better than Wes Unseld at making outlet passes. One of the things that excited me when we signed Billy Singleton was that, when he played at Stevenson, his passing skills were sometimes compared with Unseld's. That was saying something!

Wes’ outlet passes to Butch Beard’s benefit at Louisville.

I remember watching them play in a consolation game in the 1967 Holiday Festival (when Jim McMillian's Columbia team defeated us in the title game). Had never seen them play before and was greatly impressed by the chemistry those two had. Outlet passes aside, what I remember most was their running pick-&-rolls to perfection. It was something to marvel at.

"Unseld was listed at 6-7, but after he retired, he admitted that he actually had been just a hair under 6-6 all along. However, what Unseld lacked in height, he made up for with his powerful 245-pound frame and sheer determination." Maybe I was a little low. Thought he was listed at 6'5" which is why I thought 6'4". He WAS NOT 6'7".

Seems like it would be more of a competitive advantage if you underestimated your height. If I were a 6'4" PG, I would insist on being listed at 5'11". And then to bug people I'd flat-out refuse to say anything other than 5'11".

Great Collection Monte--you must have had a mom who didn't throw out your stuff.

Monte, thanks so much for posting these. Johnny Warren played for SJU during the 6 or 7 year period my Dad had season tickets. While he was certainly not one of the 5 greatest Johnnies I've seen during my years, he was one of my favorites. Just a very solid college player in every respect, who made very few mistakes and could be counted on to hit the big shot whether from the field or the foul line, while often defending the opponents best scorer.

Thanks Red. Unfortunately she did throw some stuff out, but fortunately I kept a lot of it. Man imagine the number of baseball cards of significant value that have been tossed over the years by parents? From the time I was a kid, I was a collector of sorts. Cards, significant newspapers, magazines, etc. I still have most of them thankfully.

Agree NC, a solid ballplayer. I was really happy when the Knicks drafted him, unfortunately he didn't turn out to be much of a pro. I was likewise thrilled when the Knicks drafted Dean the dream, who also didn't have much of a pro career. But he did help the Knicks win a championship. Had an opportunity about a year ago while working on a movie alongside Dean's son, to have a nice chat with him about my memories of his Dad at Rice, Marquette and with the Knicks. It was a special moment for me, and it also seemed to be one for him too.

I have great memories of Dean the Dream especially during Knicks second championship year. He and Dave the Rave Stallworth were two of my favorite Knicks of that era. Neither was a star or even a starter in the NBA after great college careers but each provided some huge lifts to the team during their two championship runs.
