Haven't posted in awhile because life gets in the way. But as I pack up my house in Queens to move to NoVA, i came across some old photos.

Can you name each SJU player with young Desco?

Rob Werdann, Shawnelle Scott, and Matt Brust.

We're about the same age, because that was the first group of players that I can clearly remember (Scott was a little later then the other two, and I barely remember Brust - just his senior year, a bit).

'82 and JSJ are right on the money.

Yea, I was born in '83 so like you said I vaguely remember Matty Brust, more so Werdann, and then definitely Shawnelle, Malik, Jayson W etc.

My dad always thought I could find a way in basketball if I played like Brust... not too athletic white kid of average size and skill. Didnt work out. MB was a dying breed and got pats on the back for slapping the floor and bumping chests with bigger opponents.

As I recall Werdann at almost 7' was the tallest of the three but Shawnelle was close. Brust was mid size, 6'6" or so listed but I remember seeing him roaming around MSG in his trench coat after he graduated and he was definitely not that height. Only other clear Brust memory is him slapping the floor on D. I picked up my MSG season tix either Werdann's frosh year or the year before. That class of Rob and Malik were Lou's last chance at a great team but Werdann getting hurt in the first half killed off what little chance the 1991 team had of getting past Duke into the Final Four. Louie never got any really good guards to put on the court with them.

Or football.
Jason Buchanan was a very good point guard and My classmate Derek Brown was solid.
Jason had a good year the Elite 8 year, otherwise he was solid but unspectacular at best. Derek was quite the athlete and defender but wasn't the type of shooter you want at SG. Plus he only played with Malik and Werdann his frosh year with limited minutes. My favorite guard of the era was Boo but he only played with them their soph year. If Chuckie could really shoot, or Sergio do anything else, or . . . .

In the late 90s I had a frequent beer pong opponent who shot the ball flat, with no arc. I would always call him Jason Buchanan. I was the one of the only ones who ever got the joke.

So much was put on Malik's shoulders in his junior and especially senior years. There was no 2nd scoring option. It was Malik all the time every time with occasional bursts from Buchanan.

The Jason Buchanan I remember was, as you note, "unspectacular." Just wasn't a top-tier PG. As for Brown, as I've posted in the past, he looked sooo good launching those long jumpers; problem was, not many of the went in the hoop and too many weren't even close.

Had classes with Jason. Really good humble guy kind of like his game. He had some good games up in Syracuse. Had I think it was a theology class or philosophy class or something like that with Boo. Oh man that year of the last second shots he was awesome

Favorite memory of Brust was my freshman year in 88’-89 against Syracuse. They were top 10 and Brust hit some huge shots down the stretch at the Garden to beat them, always with that fist pump. And of course, as mentioned, slapping the floor on defense. Great intensity from that guy.

Ironically, the same type of intensity -- floor-slapping, etc. -- that made all of us, as well was fans everywhere, hate Wojo. (Then again, Wojo was a Dukie. :))

Thanks Monte.. memories for me and some food for thought on The Hawk and the F’ing over he went through and the great Wes Unseld, would his mix tape and size even get him a look in today’s game?
