Nice to see the much maligned (on this board) Phil Greene finally getting some love.
IMHO he isn't a much different player now than he was in the past. His outside shot has improved in the past couple of years, maybe. What's really changed is that he isn't being asked to play out of position at the point and instead is playing the role that suits his skills.
He isn't all-BE first team, but has always been a valuable contributor. Good to see him get some time in the sun, along with Dom (and of course D'Angelo)
He committed to us after we signed all those top 100 kids and two JUCO all-Americans. He outworked Nuri and took his spot, causing Nuri to transfer.
He was asked to do too much too early in his career and play out of position. He does what his coaches ask and what his team needs. It was unfair to him to have him do all of that and it was even more unfair for these boards to knock him for it. He never was a point, but he took care of the ball better than anyone out there.
He steps up when we need him the most and he's worked his arse off to get minutes among a team full of top 75 recruits. He's never been a question mark on or off the court and graduated a semester early. I hope we all remember Phil Greene in a positive light and not for having to play out of position and through injuries due to no fault of his own.
I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying. Especially the part about Phil being a 100% committed to the team, and displaying that on and off the court.
But let's give this debate some context. Do you think he's better than any other starting 2 guard in the conference?
Alex Barlow
Zierden - Creighton
Mike Henry - Depaul
Enis - Nova
Gibbs - SH
Remy Abel - Xavier
Trawick - Georgetown
Carlino or Wilson - Marquette
Providence is about the only team where I'd say he has a clear advantage over his counterpart.
I'm not saying we should take phil for granted. But let's face facts, on 9 of 10 teams in this conference he wouldn't be a starter, even as a senior.
