Phil Greene

Every single one of our seniors are laying it all on the floor and playing their best ball. Phil Greene and Jamal Branch have really played their roles very well. D'Lo is a leader and Dom is the guy you want in the fox hole with you.

Each one of them deserve their shot in the NCAA Tourney.

This board would love Phil if he was utilized in his correct role as a sixth man. He'd play 15-20 min a night, spot up for threes and attack gaps on the weak side once the ball was reversed. He'd give us 7 or 8 ppg in this role and be almost universally loved.

This board should love him for what he has given for 4 years.

Really? Have you watched him play the last four years? He seems like a good kid but let's not exaggerate his basketball skills

Let's not exxagerate what expectations were for him when he was recruited. He has given far more than what just about everyone expected of him.

Nice to see the much maligned (on this board) Phil Greene finally getting some love.

IMHO he isn't a much different player now than he was in the past. His outside shot has improved in the past couple of years, maybe. What's really changed is that he isn't being asked to play out of position at the point and instead is playing the role that suits his skills.

He isn't all-BE first team, but has always been a valuable contributor. Good to see him get some time in the sun, along with Dom (and of course D'Angelo)

He committed to us after we signed all those top 100 kids and two JUCO all-Americans. He outworked Nuri and took his spot, causing Nuri to transfer.

He was asked to do too much too early in his career and play out of position. He does what his coaches ask and what his team needs. It was unfair to him to have him do all of that and it was even more unfair for these boards to knock him for it. He never was a point, but he took care of the ball better than anyone out there.

He steps up when we need him the most and he's worked his arse off to get minutes among a team full of top 75 recruits. He's never been a question mark on or off the court and graduated a semester early. I hope we all remember Phil Greene in a positive light and not for having to play out of position and through injuries due to no fault of his own.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying. Especially the part about Phil being a 100% committed to the team, and displaying that on and off the court.

But let's give this debate some context. Do you think he's better than any other starting 2 guard in the conference?

Alex Barlow
Zierden - Creighton
Mike Henry - Depaul
Enis - Nova
Gibbs - SH
Remy Abel - Xavier
Trawick - Georgetown
Carlino or Wilson - Marquette

Providence is about the only team where I'd say he has a clear advantage over his counterpart.

I'm not saying we should take phil for granted. But let's face facts, on 9 of 10 teams in this conference he wouldn't be a starter, even as a senior.

See, this is where I lose you guys. Why do we set these arbitrary bars as the floor of success and why do we have to force arbitrary comparisons? Phil could be worse than all of those guys you listed, and it doesn't take away from what he has done at St. John's or mean that he hasn't improved and outperformed his 3-star ranking and any reasonable expectations fans had for him when he signed.

Personally, I would take Greene over Barlow (who is a PG btw), Remy Abel (no question), maybe Carlino (grossly overrated by this board IMO), Zierden, and any guard on Providence not named Kris Dunn.

I think Phil would have thrived playing the correct position on a team that executed, spaced the floor, and ran a more deliberate offense. He would have been a big asset on teams like Creighton and Butler with--admittedly--better coaching.

I really didn't want to turn this into a Greene bash, so I hesitated at providing the list of players I would select Greene over. I know that will leave a few dozen posters chomping at the bit to tell me why that is ridiculous.

I've hated the Greene hate since day one.

Comparing him to other guards is so ridiculous. He's our guy, he's worked hard for us (through injuries) for four years and scored 1,000 points.

He's supplied us with memories i certainly won't forget (taking over at Syracuse) (hitting huge 3s VS Xavier)

He has his flaws as all players do but you'd think a guy would get more respect for all the hard work he's put into this program for the last four years.

These seniors deserve nothing but respect as senior day approaches.

Very well said.
Sometimes the person that does everything without drama and shows up never gets credit cuz he or she never draws attention.
This dude deserves & has my respect.
Not easy being a big time college student athlete. Lets get em these next few weeks.
Props PGIV!!

I don't mean this to sound like Phil Greene hate, and he's a nice complimentary piece and has been valuable to us this year. My main problem with him though is he's essentially the same kid that walked on campus from day one, aside from improving his jumper. In recent memory, I can't remember a player who plays more minutes and does less to fill up the stat sheet. To me what's baffling is that he still is unable to penetrate, create his own shot, or even draw fouls! We're talking about a guard who plays 35 minutes a game and averages around 1 assist. I guess I'm just really shocked he's never added to his arsenal over the years.

Greene has always been best suited as a spot shooter. He's finally been put in position to succeed and his jumper has been consistent this year. When he and Harrison are on St. John's is a tough out.

The only problem is his 3 PT % was better last year
