Phil Greene

With how much Dom has improved it's easy to overlook Phil but he's also made great strides.

@JonRothstein: Phil Greene last year for St. John's: 7.4 PPG, 24.9 MPG, 90 FGM, 30 3-pt FGM. THIS YEAR: 12.6 PPG, 34.4 MPG, 124 FGM, 40 3-pt FGM. #SJUBB

Good point. He drives me crazy at times, especially with his off balance shots, but he usually comes through. As the numbers show! He has been a big part of this turnaround.

I like Greene. He is clearly at his best when he doesn't force it and let's the game come to him. I also get the feeling he is a high quality teammate.

In the last two games Phil has had a game sealing rebound (depaul) and assist (Xavier), helping out in both areas is something that I have long been on him for. Kudos Phil, putting together a really nice senior season.

.

He also rarely turns the ball over. We can count on Phil. Great to have a player like him who you know is going to provide stability on the court.
His 3 point shooting has been money and his ability to shoot off the dribble in the lane or otherwise has been a matchup problem for other teams.

Cannot recall a better team player. Did what he could at point although never was or claimed to be a point guard. Stood aside for Dlo. Came through often eg Syracuse .Sat without complaint when Steve was experimenting .Did not allow unjustified posts to influence him. Always gave 100%

Truly a model student athlete.
No rocking of boat.
Did whatever he could.
Proud to have him as a St. John's student athlete.

Very good spot shooter when he has time to get set before launching
Also has a very good mid range game
But he can't shoot a lick off the dribble

Had a nice game tonight and having a good year.

Plays his best against the best opponents: Gonzaga, Syracuse, Gtown, Providence, Xavier, etc.

Excellent three-star and four-year player. If we had a few more of his type--especially up front--we'd be in very good shape.

Not to mention, he'll stand up to aguy that touches his ass!

That made me laugh my "ass" off.
I think Phil will make a great coach one day. He's our best recruiter as it is...best teammate according to multiple sources close to the program. He's a smart kid...competitive...team-first.

Big Shot Phil.

A team with a core of three-star guys like Phil is that infrastructure the staff needs to put in place. Then the four and five star guys can get us to the next level even if they are only here for a year or two.

Nice to see the much maligned (on this board) Phil Greene finally getting some love.

IMHO he isn't a much different player now than he was in the past. His outside shot has improved in the past couple of years, maybe. What's really changed is that he isn't being asked to play out of position at the point and instead is playing the role that suits his skills.

He isn't all-BE first team, but has always been a valuable contributor. Good to see him get some time in the sun, along with Dom (and of course D'Angelo)

He committed to us after we signed all those top 100 kids and two JUCO all-Americans. He outworked Nuri and took his spot, causing Nuri to transfer.

He was asked to do too much too early in his career and play out of position. He does what his coaches ask and what his team needs. It was unfair to him to have him do all of that and it was even more unfair for these boards to knock him for it. He never was a point, but he took care of the ball better than anyone out there.

He steps up when we need him the most and he's worked his arse off to get minutes among a team full of top 75 recruits. He's never been a question mark on or off the court and graduated a semester early. I hope we all remember Phil Greene in a positive light and not for having to play out of position and through injuries due to no fault of his own.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying. Especially the part about Phil being a 100% committed to the team, and displaying that on and off the court.

But let's give this debate some context. Do you think he's better than any other starting 2 guard in the conference?

Alex Barlow
Zierden - Creighton
Mike Henry - Depaul
Enis - Nova
Gibbs - SH
Remy Abel - Xavier
Trawick - Georgetown
Carlino or Wilson - Marquette

Providence is about the only team where I'd say he has a clear advantage over his counterpart.

I'm not saying we should take phil for granted. But let's face facts, on 9 of 10 teams in this conference he wouldn't be a starter, even as a senior.

That's a ridiculous point you are making. Phil isn't our starting 2G, DLo is and he's better than all those guys. Phil is our 2nd 2G in a 3 guard rotation so how do you compare him to those other guys. If those teams started 3 guards would he be the 2nd 2 G on their team. How many other 2G's are averaging his points and have made as many big plays as he has this season. BTW Barlow is Butler's point guard, not their 2G.

You know the game, this has been a positive thread so let's try to knock down a kid who has given his all and never been a problem.
