Towards the end of Wednesday nights game against St Peters, I took out my phone and was preparing a congratulatory text for Shaheen Holloway whom I have known for over 25 years. Talk about mixed feelings, I definitely had them. Disappointment that St Johns was losing and happy that Coach Holloway was about to get a signature win for himself and his program. Then Cole made a layup, Posh stole the inbounds pass, got it to Williams who saw Cole spot up at the 3 point line and passed it to him for the game winner. However, the game was not over until St Peters missed a layup and a tap at the rim. Now my feelings flipped, happy that Coach Anderson and the team won and sorry that Coach Holloway and St Peters lost. Also felt bad for Matt Lee, the son of former Marquette and NBA player Butch Lee.

My take from the game was that we won despite the fact that we did not play well. However, watching Cole make that layup to get us within 2 points on a drive to the basket showed that he is not afraid of the moment. Then Posh running down the inbounds pas and getting the steal displayed Coach Anderson's never give up mentality. Williams then got the ball and made the correct play by finding Cole who made the shot. Basically, I was happy that we won but realized that our defense needs improvement. Williams did not shoot well but made all 6 of his free throws and the game winning assist. Earlington and Roberts did not play well. Posh, Cole, Moore and Wusu played well and I am happy they are on our team.

Despite the fact that we won and the team showed resilience, there were 17 pages of mostly negative posts. I am not going to get into all of them here, but if you think I am mistaken, read the posts again. One I will mention is someone calling Cole a one trick pony. Guess they missed him putting the ball on the floor and then pulling up for a mid range jumper and then getting to basket for the layup that brought us within 2.

Yesterday, we beat LaSalle by 17 points 82-65. Williams and Earlington both scored in double figures. Roberts will never be an offensive force, but I think that he had 4 steals yesterday. The team played much better defensively and won.

What I found amusing was was there were only 3 pages of posts after a convincing win against LaSalle, compared to 17 pages of mostly "negative" posts after the close win against St Peters. Some on here seem to take pleasure in fixating on "negatives".

I understand that all of us as fans, want to see St Johns have sustained success as a basketball program, but that takes time. I don't want to hear that we have been waiting over 20 years, because that is not on Coach Anderson since he is only entering his second year as our coach.

Is it really asking too much to let Coach Anderson, his staff, and our players have some time before we write them off? Have any of us even considered how hard it may be for college players this season? They are cut off from family and friends, living in quarantined environments, and playing without fans.

What the staff and team needs now is our support. How many have purchased cutouts to try and show support for the team? This can be our way of showing that even though we can't be there in person, we are there in Spirit.

Not sure about anyone else, but for me, life is too short to dwell on negatives.

Good post Panther.
One point that shouldn't be overlooked however. Yesterday's game was on Thanksgiving and many likely couldn't be participating in the ebbs and flows of a Game Thread which is why it was so much shorter.

That all being said good post overall.

Great Post Panther! Tarik Turner said on the telecast yesterday that he texted coach Anderson after St. Peter's game at 1:30 AM and he was watching game film until late into the night. Coach is a grinder and his teams take that on.

I was referring to the Post game thread, and believe that if we had lost, it would have been over 25 pages long, lol.

Fair point but I think same point applies. It was a holiday and people weren't around.

But also anytime a team is struggling or 'losing' it's going to garner more reaction than a 17 point win. That's just human nature of a 'fan'. But I don't mean to take away from your larger points. Everyone was jacked up for the start of the season and they sputtered out of the gate. The 2nd half was good to see yesterday and we all hope it carries into Monday.

Hope your holiday was good

I'm not sure how long it would have been but it would have been longer than the handful of pages where it currently sits. Hell! If the game was a nail biter the thread would have been longer.

One particular poster was all over the game thread in the first half of yesterday's game spewing negativity and passive aggressive posts, but was conspicuously absent throughout the second half of the game as we seemed to pull away.

Unfortunately, some people relish in negativity and if they perceive their pessimistic views are playing out in their lense, then it creates a feeding frenzy.... Like an addict.

Solid post, panther!

I can't speak for anyone else, but I did not engage any of the game threads because I taped the game(managed to avoid hearing the outcome) and watched it when I got home last night. The only post I made after watching was on the Cole thread, and referred to how encouraged I have been with him over his first 2 games. Obviously there's a lot Moore(lol) to be encouraged about. I agree with you that Thanksgiving played a big role in the lack of post game comments, but also agree with Panther that a segment of our fan base seems to lay in wait for the negative to happen, and then comment ad nauseam. Hope you both had an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

Panther, I get it and agree. To Moose's point, I was in charge of the Turkey yesterday and had to pause the game second half. Then had to take money from family members in heated poker game. When I came online last night I actually could not find the post game thread. Wasn't sure if it was a senior moment, tryptophan or some moderator thing. But I was wiped out so went to bed... I suspect the BC game will have a very long game/post game thread!

To Panther's point, especially if we loose ;)

Haha all good points Panther. It was thanksgiving, but you better be sure if we lost it would be a 30 page thread until next game started.

That’s just the way it is. Do your best to just take the good. Criticisms are ok. But sometimes folks just need to sit back and ENJOY the game instead of breaking it down.

This is a new team. We won 2 games with newcomers and our two leading scorers from last season out. This team is learning valuable lessons early. Gonna take some learning bumps, maybe coming here against BC.

That’s the eb and flow of college basketball. These guys have only had about a week of practice with the full team. Give time to let the chemistry develop. It will come.

Excellent post, panther! IMHO you are spot on in all points! It’s so nice to read a perspective like this instead of the usual negativity. And I’ve been a fan since 1970!

There's negativity...then there's negativity. We're already into season 2...and I haven't seen any "fire Anderson" posts. We've had other coaches who didn't fare as well. Even if we finish 9th in the Big East this year...virtually everyone will hope Anderson returns.

It's been years since we've had someone who can clutch out a win in the final seconds. I''m still haunted by Anthony Mason Jr missing the same shot Cole made that would have brought us a win against a Texas team that featured Kevin Durant and D.J. Augustin. Anyone who looks for negatives (like me, usually) can worry that we're no different talentwise than St Peters. We aren't very different...but we have Cole. We have Posh Alexander. Go Redmen.

Great post Panther. Like many others, I was challenged to watch all of yesterday's game due to family obligations while seeing every minute of Wednesday nights game. Was very happy to see Earlington have a nice bounce back game yesterday and Greg play very well. Love watching Cole, Moore, Wusu & Posh - all great additions.
I'll be watching (and I'm sure posting while watching) the BC game with great anticipation. Very encouraging to know we'll have 4 of the newcomers and returnees like Champ, Williams, Earlington back next year for a really strong nucleus. Upwards and onwards with Coach Anderson!
Bitching in the post game thread is good therapy. When we win all is good and no therapy is needed.
I feel like that is what it comes down to. Many die hard fans on this board or other boards just need to vent. Especially when you're sitting by yourself watching the game and get upset at the result. Often times it turns into a negative reaction because you're heated in the moment.

Personally I've tried to steer clear of doing that for years now. I've definitely been guilty in the past. I enjoyed reading the in game and post game threads though, and that for me is therapy enough.

Because after the St Peters game I couldn’t find the post game thread, I finally figured out it was in the yellow section, which is an area I don’t look for new threads.
Truth be told there were positives and negatives from both games. One thing that pleasantly surprised me is the poise that Wusu had. . I feel he was an underrated player who is going to be a very good 4 year player for us. I think last years recruiting class is going to turn out to be a good one, despite their HS rankings. Most posters agree Posh, Moore and Cole looked good in their first two college div 1 games.

Respectively, worrying about 17 pages of negative posts is a fruitless pursuit. In many ways this is a good sign that so many people care deeply about our Program and school. All of my brothers and sisters are St.John’s alumni so we certainly are a St. John’s “family”. My niece is a sophomore at SJU. The one thing that ties us to SJU besides our degrees is our basketball team. So it’s going to get discussed. I can assure you that the fortunes of our team were passionately discussed yesterday at our Thanksgiving dinner table. Some of it is not fair or fit to print. However, it’s an opinion. That’s all it is.

Patience is a virtue. Strong opinions is just part of being passionate fans. We will never agree as to perspective. Why? I think people just look at things differently. There is no conformity required to be a fan. Not sure why people need others to view things the same way.

Panther's discussion was very spot on. I am a glass is half full person when it comes to ST. John's BB. I have never "posted" a comment on a game thread, during a game as I am either at the game itself or watching on TV and to engrossed to break away to post something and also do not feel one play is representative of the game; rather, I prefer to see/give a full game analysis of the total performance (everyone makes one bonehead decision but that is not enough to judge someone on. It is like the great Beethoven's 5th Symphony with the 4 note motif--"da, da ,da, DAH"--which makes it memorable. If all you heard was "da, da", it would be trash.

Lighten up and remember, first of all these are mostly teenagers who are being taught by an experienced staff and the need for assessment is really what they have done for the season. They are still developing as a team. Small things like knowing your teammates moves in real game situations take time to mesh.
St. John's Forever--BELIEVE
