Perspective 2021-22 season, to date.

Today we are 14-11 and 6-8 in the Big East. I had envisioned us having a better record at this point, maybe 17-8 and9-5 in the Big East. What went wrong. First of all, Julian testing positive the day before the Pittsburgh game. This was a very big blow. It is very hard to make adjustments to playing without your best player the day before a game.

The team not being able to play or fully practice because of Covid protocols for more than two weeks. When Julian came back, he was not playing as well as he did before he tested positive. Pinzon not playing since the team had games postponed was a huge blow, he had been making steady progress. Posh being in and out of the lineup was not helpful either. Some posters have been down on Wusu, I disagree with this. The young man has been asked to do a multitude of things and has had an up and down season. He was not brought here to be our primary ball handler. However, with Posh and Pinzon out of the lineup, he has been thrust into that role and performed as well as could be expected.

Acclimating all of our new players amid the Covid shutdown hindered their progress. However, our play over the past six games, even the losses, has shown that we are making progress as a team. Someone posted in another thread that Coach Anderson had lost control of the team. Nothing could be further from the truth. Coming back to being within a made 3 pointer of tying Villanova after being down 20 points with 4 minutes left, showed that this team does not quit or give up. We lost a heart breaker to UCONN, then came back and beat Xavier on the road. This showed resilience, and had me feeling proud of the way they responded.

This season has been very challenging to say the least. However, I respect the way Coach Anderson and his staff has kept them together is spite of the adversity they dealt with. I am not going to get into all of the negative comments about all the players from Julian on down the roster, I just think most of them were uncalled for. I understand saying a player had a bad game, but some comments were demeaning.

Starting tomorrow, we have five regular season games left. I am hopeful that if the team stays healthy, we can end the season on a positive note. As a fan, I will continue to root for our team, Rain or Shine.

Let's Go St Johns.

Sorry to have to disagree with you but all teams had COVID issues and worked their way through it. I don't remember posters mentioning the COVID excuse last year since it clearly favored St. John's. If you recall, the Johnnies were the only team not to suffer a halt due to COVID and Anderson and the team were the beneficiaries of that and parlayed it into a decent record. When we played Nova last year, they came off a halt in activities as did many other teams. You may also recall at the end of the year when the team lost to such teams as DePaul and a blowout loss to Nova the second time around, was when other teams were playing regularly without COVID issues. Funny how the Anderson defenders will try to spin things to find excuses for a dismal season to date.

Losing our best player for multiple games to Covid, losing our top incoming recruit for most of the season due to Covid, not being able to practice for weeks due to Covid with many new players coming in, is all "nonsense" to you?

Funny how the armchair coaching experts-Anderson haters will try to spin things to find him to blame for everything.

I'm still trying to figure out whether you are a St. John's alum/fan or not. I have to assume not at this point.

If you are referring to me, I think the answer is quite clear. I am more of a fan then most who look to excuse a staff for a season which certainly, to date, should have had a more favorable outcome. I don't see anyone mentioning last year when we played UConn and beat them that the best player in the league, James Bouknight didn't play, yet they still got an invite to the dance. My point being that all teams are faced with the same issues and work through it. True Champ and Posh did miss some games but so did Gllespie and many others.

Hopefully the team can win out and make some post season play but that does not excuse the underachievement to date and the many close games lost to a possible coaching mishap down the stretch. If you want to question my loyalty as a fan, go ahead, but  you should really be questioning the many fans, ADs etc. who chose to turn a blind eye to the many issues that have prevented this program from becoming a successful one to date.

We lost Champagnie for one game and were  playing lousy before the team got  COVID.  Please stop with excuses.  It’s ridiculous

I am also guessing not a fan. More like someone who hopes the coach and the team fails and wants to come up with anything to make the coach look bad.

My perspective, as shared elsewhere, is currently this, and is subject to change as results change and the season winds down. Marquette, currently sitting in 5th place in the standings at 9-6, is 2-1/2 games up on us and SH, currently tied for 7th at 6-8.  Can we make up ground to get to 5th and avoid playing on Wednesday in the BE tournament?  Perhaps.  That is my hope.  One game at a time.

A coach looks bad or good based on results, nothing more or less.

OK, thanks. I just wanted a straight answer instead of paragraphs of complaints. We are St. John's!

Panther, tons of respect for you, and appreciate hearing your perspectives. I 100% agree with you about rooting for the team the rest of the way and hoping for the best. Nobody should consider anything otherwise.

That being said, I disagree with your perspective when it comes to the season as a whole. We can sugarcoat and try to pinpoint the reasons, but it's been nothing less than frustrating and disappointing. This is probably the least fun I've had following the team in many years. And I'm really not willing to give anyone a pass for how we ended up here, we should be in a way better position.

Fortunately we still have a chance to turn things around a bit. I'll be rooting hard for that as always.
