Package Deals

Paris Horne was not heavily recruited, but he had some sort of connection to Justin Burrell, who was. That's why we took him. Horne became the better player.
Burrell has committed to us long before Paris. Their prep school came to Montreal for the Annual Sun Youth Christmas Tournament and Glenn Braica called me and asked me to watch Danny Greens brother. I went on a Friday night for their opening game with my kids who were little at the time. Justin was looking out for me as Glenn told him we would be there and he was the most gracious high school kid, playing and shooting around with my kids both before and after his game.
I told Glenn late that night to forget Green as the Horne kid is much better. We went back the next two days to watch Bridgeton Academy play and my kids kept chasing Paris around the court telling him to go to St. John’s.
You all know the rest. But they were never a package deal. Justin and Paris were recruited at different times and each on their own merits.
Great story RMN!

Never said it was a formal package deal. Yes, Burrell came first. But, I think we took Horne because we thought we had a lot riding on Burrell, and that Horne might help make him feel more comfortable, among other reasons.

We were the only high-majors recruiting him, so the Burrell factor still played into it somewhat.
I don't consider this a package deal. A package deal is taking a low level recruit to make a stud happy. These are teammates that are coming together. Each would have been recruited on their own. Different cases to me.
Like Sidney Lowe and Dereck Whittenburgh the starting backcourt for DeMatha High School and 1982-83 NCAA Champs NC State.

My list was just considering high school teammates.
As I recall it Milos Dumic was a package deal. But we never got the second half.
Same deal with Bob Antonelli.

JB did a really nice job explaining his relationship with PH at the zoom interview series earlier this summer. He told how he arrived at Bridgeton in the middle of the night and met Horne for the first time as his new roommate. jb describes himself as having as attitude back then but that he and ph are now best of friends. I believe he said ph is his kid's godfather.

Both very likeable guys who make sju proud as alums. Jb is learning Japanese and loves the culture in Japan, his new home.

For that matter rmn also makes sju proud as an alum.

Not sure if this example would qualify as a package attempt, but SJU gave a scholarship to Jack Bettridge (sp) who was a year or two ahead of Lew Alcindor, at Power.

Probably the biggest mercy 'ship was George Garrison who was best buds with David Russell. Deal worked like a charm.:)

Kevin Willard worked a pretty special package deal to get a top player and an assistant coach.

I had forgotten, he was also suspended 2 games in 2019 for transfer tampering of Taurean Thompson.

That type of coach answers Zaun's question as to why Seton Hall has passed us recently.
