Orlando Sanchez so far (Rumble in the Garden)

Two interesting early season Primo stats:

Orlando Sanchez has taken 8/18 (44%) of his shots from beyond the arc. He's shot 2/8 from behind the three-point line.

Orlando Sanchez also leads the team in assists in 10 through their four games.

scouts and NBA teams are aware of Sanchez and his NBA ability. If coached pushed more of the offense thru him. let him work in the low post .score rebound and dish feel we would be better He is def going to the next level he just has not had the opportunity to show case his skills

Here's the thing.. his skills aren't back-to-the-basket post-up moves, and that's what a lot of fans are looking for. Sanchez is talented, no doubt, but we already have an athletic forward that likes to lead the break after he gets a rebound, who is comfortable facing up from mid-range, and who has a tendency to drift to the perimeter too often. I'm not sure Sanchez is a good fit playing alongside Jakarr. If Obekpa continues to develop I wouldn't mind bringing Sanchez off the bench as the 6th man. With Greene starting, we need scoring at the 8 minute mark when Harrison/Sampson take a breather.

I don't know - it's an idea. They might play great together tonight, but so far I think the chemistry isn't great when they're both out there together.

Sanchez and Obekpa play great out there together. It's because they are the 4/5 on this team. People are going to have to come to grips with the fact that Jakarr is our 3, regardless of the fact that he can't hit threes. He hits long 2's at a pretty good clip and has been better at attacking the rim. No he's not a natural 3, but we play two hybrid forwards on this team in Sanchez and Jakarr.

As far as Sanchez goes, he's not really a low post guy. He's a face-up 4 who can pay in the post at times. Much like a guy like Mitch McGary doesn't sit under the basket as a center might be expected to do. That said, Orlando must be looked for when we are looking for post offense. He can pass extremely well and score on hooks and turnaround jumpers. He needs to being of our top 3 offensive threats, especially until Jordan comes to play.

Jakarr has been a "3" for probably about 10mins this season so far; last game when coach went with Obekpa, Sanchez and him on the court all at the same time.
And I don't have an issue with Jakarr's game, the fact he can't hit 3s is fine; he does a lot of other things very well. Similarly, it's not a problem in and of itself that Orlando is a face-up 4. He has a unique skill set.
My point is that the two of them don't space the court well because neither is comfortable down low. In an ideal world, they both like to play at the foul line extended, where they can catch and shoot/drive with one move/or pass from there.
Both of them need to play a lot of minutes, but to the extent that it's possible, they are both better when playing alongside Obekpa or Gift at the 5.

This!

This "offense/system" whatever you want to call it does not take advantage of his skillset. It's pretty much suited for D'Angelo's mid-range game.

There is no rhyme or reason for Sanchez to be 20 feet from the basket passing the ball around, especially against teams so small as Monmouth. I wanted to throw up watching that.

And Sanchez' post up game looked more than serviceable against Wagner. He has a little hook shot and besides he should be down there anyway to collect offensive rebounds. People wonder why we get outrebounded by smaller teams when our 6'9 guys are hanging above the 3-point line.

But hey, Lavin knows all this stuff already, right..

Primo: Jack of all trades, master of none.
Team: zero low-post scoring presence.

30-love

I really like Sanchez as a college player, but he is clearly not an NBA player. He might get a summer league shot, but he would be cut before long. He's too old and not athletic enough. What position would he play? No chance at the SF. Can you imagine him guarding Kobe or Ginobli?

We need to stop thinking everyone on the roster is an NBA player! Moe Harkless did a number on everyone. Nobody on this team will be on an NBA roster next season.

Have to agree completely. If you aren't putting up big numbers in Junior College or against incredibly inferior athletes so fat this year, no reason to think the NBA will be interested. If he really was as good as the hype, he would be in the NBA already.

Sanchez nor Jakarr are nba prospects just watch other games on tv...there are a ton of talented 3 and 4 this season...

So far this season, no one on the team has improved their draft prospects. Jordan is young, so he gets a pass.

When is the last time we saw a SJU player wow us from the moment he stepped on the court? For me, it was Hatten. That's a long time ago. I was hoping Jordan would be next. A resounding no.

I remember Hatten's first game. He didn't 'wow' me that night.

My memory is a bit foggy, but I recall he did some good things against Gonzaga in the Great Alaska Shootout.

It wasn't until we played Fordham (as, the other games we played in the Great Alaska Shootout wasn't televised) that I felt Hatten was gonna be the 'goods.' I recall one of my friends' (who is a G'town fan) watching the game with me. I can remember (I can recall it like yesterday) telling him that Hatten would be, one of, if not the best guard in the Big East.

I have been to 3 games so far this year, and frankly I do not see any first rounders on this team except for possibly RJ.

He can't be happy with riding the pine most of the night

something bothered him at end of game tonight...he was taken out and Lavin was giving him a pep talk

Omar Cook wowed me that first game against Kentucky, then went slowly downhill as that season moved along.

I'll give Jordan this: His back-to-back buckets, followed by Branch's driving layup, at least gave us some momentum going into the locker room, after that terrible first half.

I do think our effort and mentality was good in the second half. We went inside more, didn't settle for as many long jumpers, and got Longwood in foul trouble early. Execution still needs to be much better, though. Jakarr was invisible out there tonight, at least from a scoring perspective.
