On Court Improvements

It’s mid-summer and the board is a little slow. So I thought I’d start a thread. I was thinking about the program, and the changes that I hope to see this season. And for me the number one frustration for the last twenty years has been the inability to defend the three.

I recognize that Pitino needs some time. But the first thing I want to see on the court is improved perimeter defense. To me it’s job one.

Maybe this isn’t worth a threat but I’d like to hear what people think can be improved on in the short term. What can be improved on this season. Right now. Right away.

Not sure if its just us being so aware of it as fans... but it does seem that it was such a Consistent issue throughout the tenures of Lav/Mullin/CMA...

Good thread.

While SJU had problems defending the three, the problem was exacerbated by its inability to hit three point shots. They were consistently playing catch-up.

The issue was a toxic cocktail, that killed this team regularly.

Maybe because I was never very good at it, but my personal bugaboo is missed Free Throws. If Free Throws were reversed we would have won many games over the years (especially against Villanova) that we lost. It seems like the players we have brought in will be much more efficient from the line.

Cutting down on unforced turnovers is bugaboo number two for me and not boxing out and giving up second and third chance opportunities is bugaboo number three. Bugaboot number four is not defending the three point line.

Complete lack of off court drama would be nice along with a group that really improves defensively by the time BE season starts.

I’m not really sure that is possible anymore with the leverage players have thanks to the portal. But it sure would be nice

I think we are all looking forward to sound, fundamental basketball. Mind you I’m not talking about going back to the two hand set shot.

However, how many times have I cringed over lazy “cross court” passes or balls “saved“ directly under your OWN basket, how many times did we watch “heaves” passing as shot attempts (UFO’s), how many times did we watch defenders not “stop the ball” or “give up“ the baseline? Also, can we also develop effective “in bounds” plays? We haven’t had one since Looie left!

This is about accountability. I just haven’t felt like any of our players were held to account for these types of plays. You want to play undisciplined ball? Here’s the bench. I feel like a firm team structure based on accountability is coming and I am all for it.

I know that this is not a short term wish for improvement, but ...........

I will be very happy to see our kids locked in and focused on the coach's instructions during timeouts
Those "In the Huddle" segments with CMA were quite painful to watch
As a former coach, I would have sat anybody who was disrespectful to me and the team in those huddles
I am very confident that won't be an issue anymore

We won’t have a problem hitting three point shots this year I don’t think. Got a bunch of guys who can make them. Also think that with Pitino’s complex match-up style zone defense, three point defense will be less of a concern. We shouldn’t be getting caught quite so much on our rotations using a matchup zone.

Interesting thread but comparing apples and oranges; IMO, everything will be improved, from an obvious to the naked eye commitment to winning by all involved, to defense, to sharing the ball, to intelligent, team play on both sides of the court.

Things will be infinitely better everywhere. Including the trees that grow the apples and oranges for the sake of making our unrelated comparisons. 😀

Players displaying better basketball IQ's
Major improvements in team cohesiveness offensively and defensively
End of game improvement allowing us to win rather than lose close games
