Officiating

I hate blaming officials when my team loses. It's something I did as a kid when I was unable to be objective whenever my team lost a basketball game. With that said, I can't help but feel we've really been getting shafted by the zebras these last few games. Now, am I saying that poor officiating is the sole reason we are on a three game losing streak? Absolutely not. I would say lack of depth above anything else is the main reason. But boy oh boy, it just feels like we can't get a whistle if our lives depended on it.

Here's one example. Last night D'Lo gets hit in the mouth and has to go to the bench because he's bleeding. Should this have been a flagrant foul? I'm not sure; it was clearly inadvertent and part of the physicality of the Big East. But can you remember the last time a player got hit in the mouth, went down, was bleeding, and the officials DIDN'T go to the monitor to check for a flagrant? Just one example from last night, but I was shocked they didn't at least review it.

Maybe it's just me and sour grapes over our three game losing streak, but wanted to see if anyone else is seeing the same thing I'm seeing in these games.

No.

I agree with your take on the Harrison play but overall I don't have a problem with the officiating.

I didn't have a problem with the officiating last night but if lavin could of gotten a technical to stir up the team and officiating after one his players went down (harrison/obekpa). Happens all the time in sports.

Just part of the game.

I'm resorting to humor to kill pain, but just had a vision of Lav taking jacket off, hurling it to get tech, revealing his UA sweatshirt is sleeveless. :)

They actually did review it. I was there at the game close to the court, and I believe it was during a TV timeout. Two refs initially reviewed it, and ten they brought in a third for another opinion. Following this they came over and told the announcers there was no technical foul and also explained to both coaches.

They did review it and determined that it was not flagrant. I disagree. I high elbow which connects should have been a technical foul.

I haven't had a problem with the refs all year and I try never to use them as an excuse but last night I thought they were atrocious. Nova new that they had a size and depth advantage over us and they played a very physical game. The refs ignored much of the physical play but called a lot of touch fouls on us. The calls were very inconsistent.

I never have a problem with officiating when we win, and always have a problem when we lose.

I may be mistaken, but I think they called a foul on Harrison before he took an elbow to the mouth. I think even after the whistle they could have called a flagrant foul for swinging elbows high. Had they not blew the whistle on Harrison he could have gotten a call.

I saw the foul as inadvertent, and overall I thought the officials did a decent job of letting the teams play. CO could have racked up fouls much faster on defense if they were calling the game tight. there was a lot of pushing and shoving on both teams down low, but it never really escalated. On the play where CO hit the deck and came up woozy, you could see that he was hooking and holding the Nova player. Seton Hall and Butler had several calls that didn't go our way...

I had a problem with Pointers 3rd and 4th foul. The 3rd especially where he had perfect position and arcidiACTono put his shoulder into Dom's chest. I also had a problem when Christian Jones got called for a foul when arcidiACTono tried to guard him and just flopped to the ground. That's not why we lost but the officiating sucked

I thought I had a problem with Harrison carrying a Nova player on his back as being a Nova foul, but when Harrison dropped him, D'angelo threw up his thumbs to indicate hump ball, which is what was called.

I thought, how ironic? Not only has Harrison carried SJU, now he's carrying Nova as well.

That was an odd call. I think the ref blew the whistle in order to sop the play and avoid potential injury. Since there wasn't a foul on either player, all they could do is call it a jump ball. The fact that Dlo helped them out just made the call easier.

Maybe it's just me, but I always assumed when someone lands on you, unless you submarined him, it's his foul.

I think overall officials getting worse and worse. At best they arent getting any better. How many times do they fall for the head jerk that guards use and call a foul thats really not there? They have go to see the tape on this. I find it laughable.

One thing you have to worry about re: officiating. The Big East offices are now firmly in NYC. That's means administrators are right over these guys shoulder.

This happens too with the Knicks, Nets, Yankees, Mets etc. I truly believe some of these refs/umps get neurotic about being labeled a "homer" when officiating at the league's "home base." It's not intentional, but it will probably result in us going 5-on-8 in all 18 Big East games this year.

One thing that the league officials should recognize is that like it or not, the trajectory of the new Big East conference can be greatly increased by a strong team in New York City. 19,000 fans packing SJU, increased NYC Metro television ratings increase the national visibility for all teams in the conference. While bending over backwards to avoid homers at MSG hurt SJU but to a greater extend, the entire conference.

John Cahill the former official who heads up BE officials and Stu Jackson have been at a NUMBER of SJU games this year. I saw both on TV during the Nova/Hall game and then both were at CA for Butler game.

Val Ackerman sat next to me last evening. The one ref who appeared to be the youngest of the crew was absoluetely terrible last evening. From what I have seen he and John Gaffney have been really against us for years.
