Obekpa

It's really hard to elevate the way Obekpa does on a gimpy ankle. I'm okay with other guys picking up the slack.

Obekpa played 24 minutes vs. Nova in game 1, had just 2 rebounds, but blocked 3 shots to go along with 4 pts and 0 assists.

He was a totally different player back then on a totally different team.
Totally, for sure.

If I`m Lavin Obekpa doesn`t play. What if he aggravates and it`s much worse after? Then maybe he`s out until the B.E. Tourny.

Yeah big game tomorrow, but it`s only one game. We need him for the rest of the season as well.
Everyone will just have to step up that much more.

I agree. As big as this game is, it is one game in the standings. It is too soon after the injury to risk playing him. If he's better than anticipated, then I would rather wait and be sure that he is 100% for Xavier and the following games.

Unless I read it wrong, the docs cleared him to practice, not play.

He'll be reevaluated prior to the game.

I don't think Lavin plays him simply because of his no practice rule. Shooting off to the side by yourself is not practicing.

I am sure the staff will play it safe, they have seen him on the floor and have a pretty good idea of what he can do, how he's moving and how he really feels as he runs and works out on it. I trust them to make a smart move with him. If the doctors say he can play, then the rest is up to the coaching staff. Tomorrows game is huge. Top 25 team, great for RPI. We will see. I do however feel better hearing this news.

The CO of late is not the CO that played Nova then. That's why his injury really bumbled me out. If he gets cleared it's not all or none . If we could get 15 minutes from him Ill be happy. But I agree if he's ready for Xavier that would be fine, can't have him reiinjuring his ,especially down the stretch. I don't understand the no practice rule. Are you saying that if DLo had a stomach virus today and missed practice, he wouldn't play tomorrow, doesn't make sense.

Very true, this team has morphed from so lame to tripindicular!

Correct, will sit out.

That's not the point. The point is that we played Nova pretty even with a non-productive Obekpa. and everyone else has upped their game. Don't get me wrong.. At 100%, Obekpa is a big help. Then again, operating down low vs. a Creighton vs. a Villanova are two different things.

Does anyone know which ankle Obekpa sprained? Only from experience, I always had a much tougher time jumping if it was my ankle opposite my dominant hand. As a lefty, this means I launched off my right foot. So for me, a left ankle sprain wasn't quite as disabling as a right ankle sprain. You do have to adjust how you ankle so that your healthy ankle absorbs more of your weight.

My feeling is that he may see spot minutes, especially if our front line gets into foul trouble. IF that happens and the goal is for him to be 10-12 minutes, if he is feeling pretty good, he may play more.

With sanchez out obekpa should at least dress...play sparingly if needed
I think he is dressing either way. I saw a quote on twitter that he will be evaluated in lay up lines. I agree though with Sanchez out I want CO to get some minutes.

St. John's Lavin: Chris Obekpa (ankle) feels good. Worked out lightly, wanted to practice. Docs OK with that. 'Possible' to play at Nova.

Without knowing his injury, I would assume Chris is going to try to play tomorrow. If he warms up and can't go - then I'm sure he won't. But I'd bet him and Lavin are going with the mindset to see how he feels in the morning.

Obekpa is a passionate guy it seems, and I'm sure he'll want to help his team out. And the truth is, Obekpa at 70% for 10 or 15mins is a big help to us.

completely agree, his presence makes a difference itself

Especially with no Sanchez.

If we could get 10 to 15 minutes out of him that would be big . Without another big Sampson and Gift will likely foul out. The alternative is to give Dom minutes at the 4. Doms tough but he is only 6 5 and about 200 pounds.

My first thought was not to rush him back, because ankle injuries can linger. However, if he is even able to consider playing after only a few days, it couldn't have been THAT bad. Our schedule provides enough time to recover...he'll have 3 1/2 days before we play Xavier at the Garden Tuesday, then five days before Depaul, and six days after that for the Marquette game. To be honest, we can probably get by Xavier without him provided Sanchez is back like expected.

If we could get 15 minutes out of him for Nova and Xavier, we won't need him again until Marquette on 3/8. That is more than enough time to fully recover from an ankle injury.

Let's hope for a Willis Reed return for Chris today!! Also like playing pointer on pinkston.... Going to b a great game
