Guess he met the new coach & heard his expectations;

Former St. John's big man Chris Obekpa, who sat out at UNLV this past year, will declare for the NBA Draft without agent, source told ESPN.

Would not be shocked if someone took a shot on him in 2nd round

smh I don't even know what to say, wish him the best either way though.

Which only reinforces how correct our current coaching staff was in letting him go.
He was a good talent but an absolute head case and a disgrace to the program both on and off the court.
Hope the pay is good in the Phillipines.

When these 6ft. 8in centers like OB are still in high school their advisors should take them to a pro game sitting in a seat close to the paint and let them see the size and strength required to play that position in the pros.
Then instruct them to start practicing their 18 ft jump shot the next day.

I guess the old saying rings true, "Denial is more than just a river in Egypt."

Oh well, he's not our problem anymore. I do wish him well.

Letting him go? The guy is completely off the charts in terms of being unmanageable and unpredictable. He does what he wants to do when he wants to do it, whether going into a game or not, hitting an opponent with a cheap shot, smoking pot, or transferring. Nothing would surprise me except him becoming a solid citizen and NBA player.

is he testing the waters or positively going?

Jeff Goodman says no agent, so testing the waters.

Really, no player has anything to lose, if they do this without hooking up with an agent. Can't blame Obekpa.

Agreed - limited to no downside for him.

Seriously guys, with the new rules what the hell would it hurt to test the waters and hear first hand from the pros what they think and what he needs to work on. As long as a player does not hire an Agent, that player could do this each year up until his last year.

As to whether or not he thinks he will get drafted this year, who knows what's in his mind. By not hiring an Agent, he still has the option of withdrawing.

Lastly, I don't think there is anyone on this Board who has any idea if he has gotten bigger (mass and muscle wise which he did do hear between his sophomore and junior year) or developed more of an offensive game with better hands in his year sitting out. Nor would he be the only player who has failed a drug test or two.

Never thought he was anywhere near NBA material, and can't imagine anything happened(like a 3" growth spurt or development of small forward skills) in his one year off that would change that. He hasn't even stepped foot on the court yet for UNLV, who tool a leap of faith on him, and he's already got one foot out the door. IMO the staff would be saving themselves a lot of future headaches by severing ties with him now. Guess if that happens, he did have something to loose.

Yes really! He let his entire team down with his extra curricular activities, or did you forget?

No, I didn't forget about him letting his team down. But, I just wouldn't go as far as calling him a "bum." Maybe, this stuff somewhat takes a backseat in the grand scheme of things, IMO.
