Oakdale Campus Sold

a good move by sju I would take the $22.5 million and use toward tuition cuts on queens campus

A bad move in 1999 and a bad move in 2016. Now you know why our business school is not rated!
The $22 million would only cover the basketball coaching salaries for the next 6 years. Take the $22 million and buy up as much real estate in Williamsburg Brooklyn as possible. They would double their investment in less than 5 years. NYU, Columbia and Fordham have been using real estate in NYC for years as investment opportunities.

I was there a long time ago. It is a really pretty piece of property, and I've always believed there was some potential in a long island campus though I am probably wrong. It just pains me to see Hofstra, Adelphi, and Molloy thrive with many Long Island students that were once the type that would atttend St. John's.

Part of the failure was due to priorities, the school was focused on queens, Manhattan, and even Staten island. That campus was pretty, but they did not put much money or effort into getting the operation up and running. Furthermore, the original cost was a gift, as the catholic church wanted a catholic school to purchase the property. FYI, Dowling was originally purchasing this property, but at the last minute a deal was brokered and SJU was the owner, yet they weren't even considering a LI campus.

Also, the property has to have 1000 feet of bay front property and at least another 1000 of canals.

Look like I said, I don't have all the facts, but does this look like a place only worth 22 million.

Once you get into that level of real estate, I couldn't accurately estimate. To me, I'd have guessed it was worth at least $75-100 million.

I know it's only a part of the sale, but the Bourne Mansion is not in good shape. I happened to be there recently and I was not impressed with the condition. Upkeep could be a problem that caused the value to go down a little.

The grounds are gorgeous with beautiful views of the Southbay. I too was taken by surprise of what they sold it for, figures they get at the very least double that.

It may be on the National Register of Historic Places. which would mean that any renovation has to be done in a certain manner, and that the structure will have to be maintained at a very high cost. At NYIT de Seversky Mansion really doesn't show well despite them renting it out for weddings and other events.

Bourne Mansion also has the damage from all the bombs and car wrecks and such.

class of 1972 I get what you are saying but the Suffolk county authorities made it very difficult for the school to develop the property, so sju did the right thing and got out with something, the focus should be on queens. Reallocate the money and spend it on tuition relief and student retention we need to drastically improve our 4 year graduation rate. SJU needs to Lower tuition and make a task force dedicated to this effort keep good student who become successful who donate back.

as far as relocating the existing grad program of 220 students

much smaller than I expected... surprised it's even worth the effort to relocate to a leased facility to continue operating on Long Island.

Wow, these pictures bring back memories. I graduated from LaSalle Military Academy in 1965. The campus was really beautiful. But those four years were a hell of an experience. The Christian Brothers did not play, they could become violent. The other Cadets as we were called came from various backgrounds. Somoza who was the dictator of Nicaragua had two sons there, Carlo Gambino had two grandsons there, there were also the sons of doctors and lawyers. Over the past few years, I have gotten in touch with a few of my classmates through Facebook. Had dinner with a couple of the at Prime in Huntington and went to last years St Johns/Providence game with a classmate who is a Providence Alum.
My fondest memory of 1965 was being in Madison Square Garden when St Johns beat Villanova in the championship game of the NIT, this was also Coach Lapchicks last game.

Was at that game as well Panther & was beaten a few times by Christian Brothers at Manhattan Prep in Riverdale so we have something else to talk about when we get together for our dinner, lol!

HIGHLIGHTS

More than 400 students will enroll there in fall semester
University has offered courses at Oakdale campus since 1999

St. John’s University will move its graduate center to Hauppauge in June, leasing a new, modern location after selling its waterfront mansion and 170-acre campus in Oakdale for $22.5 million last September, university officials announced Thursday.

The Queens-based Catholic school signed a five-year lease on a one-story building in an office park at 120 Commerce Dr.

St. John’s, which has a total undergraduate and graduate enrollment of more than 21,000, has offered graduate courses through its School of Education at its Oakdale site since 1999.

About 300 students currently are taking courses there, and the university projects that more than 400 students will enroll in the fall semester, officials said. The school also has campuses in Manhattan, Staten Island and Rome, Italy.

“We are committed to continuing to provide quality graduate education programs on Long Island,” St. John’s University Provost Robert A. Mangione said in a statement. “This new, centralized location provides us with the opportunity to serve our current students and to expand the academic offerings at this site.”

University officials said the new Long Island Graduate Center will feature six state-of-the-art classrooms, video-equipped conference rooms that will allow for an interactive learning experience, offices for full-time faculty based on-site, student gathering spaces and space for special events.

St. John’s officials said the university has requested approval from its accrediting agency, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Courses currently under way in Oakdale will continue as planned. The university said it will move all of its Long Island operations to Hauppauge after the spring semester.

St. John’s has offered graduate education courses on Long Island since the school in 1999 purchased the property at 500 Montauk Hwy. in Oakdale for $14.3 million from the LaSalle Christian Brothers, who operated LaSalle Military Academy there for more than 75 years.

The site was the estate of Frederick Bourne, president of Singer Sewing Machine Co., from 1889 to 1905. The main structure on the campus, the Bourne Mansion, was built in the Georgian architecture style in 1897 and has sweeping views of Great South Bay.

The property was sold in September to Amity Education Group, which operates Amity University, one of the largest multi-campus colleges in India, which said it planned to open a school for international students
