I couldn’t even understand why the staff gave him a scholarship when I saw him in the first few games. His improvement has been tremendous from where he was to where he is now.

Happy to be dead wrong with my initial impression and also credit to the staff and the player for the changes. Soriano is a better player now as well. Don’t know if it’s Zendon - but someone is doing a very good job with the big men.

Soriano and Nyiwe scored 18 and had 13 rebounds. When did SJU ever get those numbers from their centers? Both of them will be more productive next season.

Niwye's athleticism for his size is impressive.  Hes a nimble big man.  A great compliment to what Soriano brings to the table.

And Niwye has a shot too.  Hes going to be dangerous when he gets even better at that outside shot.

Esahia Nyiwe Is listed as a Junior this season, meaning that next season will be his final season of eligibility.

With the COVID exceptions extending eligibility for many players, does anyone know whether Esahia may be eligible for an additional season of eligibility beyond 2022- 2023 ?

I don't think he was on the Tech roster at the beginning of last year, and I think he arrived to us second semester. I suspect he gets screwed by a technicality.

Soriano and Nyiwe's development has been great this year, you could see both getting better and better after each week.  If all the big men return next year, it'll be one of the best front courts in the BE next year.

I'd actually like to see CMA start Wheeler at the 3, Nyiwe at the 4, and Soriano at the 5 next season (Although it's highly doubtful he does that.)  Nyiwe and Wheeler are both capable of guarding guards and they both can stretch the floor with their shooting.  And Wheeler is actually a decent ball handler, I'd argue his ball handling is better than Champagnies.  Wheeler can actually take his man off the dribble from the 3 point line and get to the rim, this is one thing Champagnie really doesn't have in his arsenal.

I want to see more of Magic Nyiwe going end-to-end for a sweet finger roll.

Only DePaul could let the opposing center do that.

I"m not gonna say I told Monte so.  /media/kunena/emoticons/silly.png

In all seriousness I am not ready to declare based on one game that Nyiwe has put together the collection of size, skills and athleticism that he has and is now destined for stardom.  However he does have a lot of raw material to work with and has been making steady progress this season before last night's breakout game.  If he can in fact put it all together on a consistent basis and continue to advance, he will be a very productive player.

And I am compelled to mention that for all the heat the staff takes from folks on this site, they do seem to know how to develop players, Nyiwe being only the latest example.

Zendon working very closely with both Soriano and Nyiwe.

Going all the way back to Carnesecca, there were complaints that players never improved when they came here.  Case in point - David Russell, but many others.

In just 3 seasons, we have seen tremendous improvement from players, including guys who never figured to be solid rotation players making big contributions.

St. John's is NYiwe's team

Oh come on LMF, tell the truth, I reached out to you over a month ago and said that I was starting to see the potential that you saw early on in Nyiwe. I even went so far as to call him an incredible athlete, maybe the best on the team. But,
of course, we can't judge him solely on one  very good game against the 2nd worst team in the conference. Let's see how he does tonight and hopefully tomorrow night. Regardless, at this point I feel far better about Nyiwe then i could have ever imagined when I saw him early in the season. Kid looks like a much different player then he did back in Nov.

Give the coaching staff credit for finally bringing in some credible big men and, more importantly, seeing them develop into credible BE caliber players.  It just took a little time, but they're getting it all together at a good time of the season.  Hopefully it is not too late.  And if Wheeler has another year of eligibility, I like our front court of him, Stanley, Nyiwe and Soriano for next year.  And who knows, maybe Traore will live up to being a fairly high recruit.

Many say Grant Billmeier of Seton Hall is great big man coach. He was not a very good player, but like golf, observing and teaching has a different skill set than playing.

Zendon was an unorthodox player with talent, but not a master of post play. He obviously was a much better college player than Grant, but may be on same path to evolve into an excellent coach. Too early to tell, but his work with Nyiwe and Soriano seems evident Zendon has teaching skills and pleased he is on staff.

Agree about Zendon's style of play.   I don't know if he had a late growth spurt, but as fans we always lamented the double pumps and him keeping the ball low within reach of defenders.  Leftys are often unorthodox, including Berry.

He also had the benefit of continuing to improve and correct bad tendencies during his time in the NBA and playing professionally.   So what we saw at SJU was likely not the finished product.   Things that you can get away with in college won't fly in the pros.

Zendon has done a great job as an assistant coach, and also connecting to former players and alums.   He is a very bright guy, extremely gregarious, and part of the reason for his hire is that he connects the present with our rich tradition.

He also as been a G league coach for a couple of seasons, so all of this experience counts.

I was and am a BIG Zendon fan and I am always compelled (sorry) to say on here that the guy, for maybe not living up to the hype, averaged nearly a double double over 4 years for us...  There's that.  Great to see him making an impact.  And YES, I agree that this group of bigs is the best collectively we've had in over a decade.  And, hopefully Wheeler decides to return and not go pro overseas yet; this bunch could be very good next year up front.

100% the truth.  Which should stop me from teasing you why, exactly?

Practice and desire brings improvement, improvement brings confidence, confidence and team acceptance brings drive!

Next year we might actually have a much bigger and more athletic team than we have had in many years.
Nyiwe, Joel and Wheeler would make very intimidating matchups. Lets hope that they continue developing and stay with us.
Thank you Zendon!
