For the first time in 51 Years the City has a champion pro basketball team in the NY Liberty. It happened the last time in 1973. The Liberty were an original franchise in the WNBA founded about 28 years ago. They were owned by Dolan until Joe Tsai and his wife purchased them and moved them out of an arena in White plains drawing about 2,000 per game to the Barclay Center where they draw over 18,000. (I attended a regular season game and the enthusiasm in the stands was the same as last night. The Rangers last won in 1994 right before the Dolans bought MSG and the teams.

Last night the Liberty showed what can be accomplished by removing the "Curse Of The Dolan" as they finally won it all. Now if only he would sell the Knicks/Rangers/MSG, we might have some more championships in NYC.

Thank goodness. The timing was perfect as it took much of the sting off of the Mets.

Does anyone else acknowledge this is impossible to watch? Apart from the top 1 or 2 players on each team with talent the others are all horrendous. It’s a subsidized league (not withstanding the big bump they got from Clark’s emergence), and you have ESPN shoving it down everyone’s throats to promote their partnership.

I guess my punishment for thinking this is that I have young daughters and will be resigned to watching girl's/women’s basketball till the end of my days. I’m going to do everything to empower them though “You can do anything and everything you put your mind to girls. Except dunk a basketball, that’ll never happen!” Smdh

There has always been talk about lowering the rim to 9.5 feet or 9 feet, considering women already use a smaller ball.

Problem is making this universal at the lower levels would be tough since not every CYO/grammar school/YMCA gym can adjust the height of the rims.

I don't think you or anyone on the site has the supreme perspective to consider it impossible to watch for everyone.

I do think people should recognize that it's a basically a totally different sport than men's basketball. The men's game is far more skilled (in every facet of the game) and a lot more high flying. I personally find it much more appealing to watch, but I can also imagine girls/women finding the women's game with relatable people more entertaining for them to watch. I do think Clark is fun to watch since she is so skilled.

Personally, I can watch any sporting event that has high stakes and eight minutes to go. That's basically what I did for the Liberty's finals match-up. It was fun.

Completely understand your take here and by no means do I have supreme perspective, just average to above-average perspective.

I do truly believe they stink on ice and wouldn’t know a good thing if it hit them in the face. They hit the jackpot with Caitlin Clark and left her off the Olympic team out of spite. I’m speaking here strictly from a dollars and cents/watchability aspect. They run the league like it’s a charity because that’s essentially what it’s been since inception. And I detest both sides politicizing this or making it about anything other than women’s basketball and growing the game.

Before the Olympic decision they postured as if their relevance was established on the backs of Diana Taurasi, Lisa Leslie, and Cynthia Cooper. All PHENOMENAL ball players who could do nothing to make the league viable or even sniff profitability. When you couple that with 95% of the league looking like they couldn’t make a JV boys team, it’s tough for me to watch! Hope they can figure it out though.

Yeah, I was definitely unimpressed by the overall skill in the league. Some of the rotation players can't catch passes or dribble in traffic. The quality has to improve.

It'll be very interesting what happens this off-season. I definitely think the players and coaches totally bungled the opportunity to make the Clark thing more fun. It became a conversation that was totally unnecessary. Players picking on a prized rookie is something you see in competitive, professional sports. But to downplay how good she was, and to give wild reasoning why people like me would want to put on a game just for her, really made it more unenjoyable than it should've been.

The players opted out of their CBA. Which I do understand. Angel Reese's salary was 72k and the max is only 225k -- that's wild. I think the Liberty was fined last year for using a private jet to games. That's also absurd. But, the finals broke a record with having 3 million viewers for Game 3. While its great they're breaking records like that, it's a drop in the bucket compared to what the college game does -- let alone NBA. They're also losing 30-40 mill per year.

3 regular season NCAA games had viewership over 3 million last year. An additional 6 has viewership over 2 million.

You can't compare it to March Madness, that would be madness. IMVHO second only to the Super Bowl in sports media relevance.

Football rules TV media with NFL ruling the roost, and CFB top games are huge draws too, though mostly in flyover states. ;)

Women's college national title game had 18 million viewers!

Why not also start every game with the score 40-40 and give a team one point if their shot hits the rim. Geesh can we help them out in any other ways? 🤪

low scoring in finals was due to Lynx style of play which is heavy on the defensive. Liberty averaged 84 points/game in regular season in games that are 40 minutes which translates to 100 points/game in the 48 minutes/game played by NBA

Collier was a great defender

Could be one of those special years when a city wins a whole bunch of championships.

Liberty.
Hopefully yanks.
I’m seeing a red national championship for St. John’s.
Knicks look to be good to challenge too.
And who knows with the hockey.
