NY Post Rick Pitino’s two month St. John’s overhaul

I love the fact that we started recruiting an entire team of guys and placed the highest priority on shooting. Sju teams never have done that under most of our prior coaches. We always just recruited pretty athletic, tough kids who go out a run and Chuck. I think the term “rock ball” was probably created in reference to SJU’s play style all these years. Frankly it’s kinda crazy that it took til RP comes along to place priority on shooting after all these years.

Not only did Pitino stress the importance of recruiting players who have shooting skills he basically said it is almost impossible for a player to improve his shooting skills by the time he enters college.

Said it's almost impossible to "change players shot" which i took to mean shooting form not necessarily that you can't improve your shooting accuracy through repetition which is why he emphasizes shooting drills.

Improving shooting accuracy takes years, something most college coaches don't have now with the transfer portal

The only person more happy than us and Father Shanley about Pitino is Zach. His dream is to have a consistently relevant SJU team that he can just cover the s*** out of all year.
I understand hyperbole and your overall point. But just to be clear, in no way, shape, matter, or form is Zach happier than we are over the hiring of Pitino.

It may be more fun to have a worthwhile beat again, but Zach has zero emotional ties.

I know. I was being tongue-in-cheek. Professionally though, he is college basketball first (at least in his mind, I think). And he isn't going to cover anyone else extensively, or even really at all, unless we are relevant. So the Pitino-stuff for him is a professional positive.

Yes, because people will actually care about his beat now. He will not be sitting alone in press row any longer.. Zach will have company.
