Now that our 22-23 roster has new homes....

At the meet and greet for Pitino last week the question I didn't ask but should have is "Past St. John's coaches excluded, name 3 coaches who were mentors or who you modeled yourself after."
It would be interesting to know his answer. Let's know where his beliefs grew from. Will you still have a chance to ask?

I definitely will have the chance to interact more with him. You know, the impressive thing is Rick works incredibly hard at everything he does in terms of his role. Roberts really had no relationship with supporters, Lavin either. Mullin showed up and interacted at events, but over time I had a couple of pretty long conversations with him, and the next time I saw him, had no idea who I was and no recollection of the conversations. I will say though that despite the criticism he gets on here (some of it valid) that he is a really good person (as is brother Terence who I've gotten to know). Anderson was at a whole different level. He and his wife got to know many supporters by name and warmly interacted with them as friends at events. I already see signs of that level of interaction by Rick. I don't think his wife will be involved the way Marcheita Anderson was ( she is a terrific lady), but I guess we will see. Without going into detail, Rick has already done some things in terms of donor interaction that no other coach has done in my experience here. It makes me really optimistic to see all the levels Rick interacts at. He is like a one man dynamo, and definitely empowers his staff to be an integral part of running the team. Appears to be zero dead wood, and when your 70 year old coach works his ass off, even if he didn't demand his staff does too, it has to inspire them simply by observation.

To win a championship takes a lot of good luck in amy given season. I have every confidence though that Rick can build a championship caliber team here.

Very telling comment by Rick. Past coaches always sold how good the following season's team would be (Norm, Lavs, Anderson would do that, but not Mullin). Rick has simply said We will see how good this team is once we start practicing. That's really telling about Rick and frankly refreshing. No bs there from a guy we maybe mischaracterized as Slick Rick. I'm getting the impression he is the Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg of college basketball, paying attention to the smallest details.

Thanks for that insight Beast, excellent post with information many of us don’t have access to see. Mind blowing to me that Roberts also was bad at relationship building. But all in the past!

Keep in mind that was my experience with Roberts and others may feel differently. I've cetainly heard from several people over time what a wonderful guy he is but never saw it myself.
