Nova Game Recruits

I remember reading an interview with an NBA scout a few years ago. He basically said that when he's scouting prospects, he doesn't give a sh*t about which team wins the game or what the score is. All he cares about is the player(s) he came to see. So I'm not worried about the Nova score impacting our recruits. I'm assuming they (and their handlers) know the value of major minutes on a big stage. Just look at Moe Harkless.

The fact that they are getting a kid like Che to the game is absolutely priceless. Win or loose in a year from now they can point to an increase of 10 wins in the season and the year after that how they Dance and how the program went in 3 seasons from a team of 3 returning players who averaged a total of 4 points to a stacked tournament team. Fantastic potential recruiting with the top kid in the class of 2020. These guys have a great plan that will reap huge benefits.

2020 wing Che Evans Jr. (MD) Will visit St. John's for their game vs Villanova, per his coach

St John's expecting big haul of visitors for Sunday at MSG against Villanova. Anyone asking if this is a good idea is getting muted. #sjubb

OK, I'll bite, Zach.

It's a bad idea (and I'm not asking him that, I'm telling him that). Bringing our recruits to games is not the smartest thing right now. Let them watch practices, where they get a better idea of how Mullin runs things.

Many of us, myself included, thought having recruits at the Syracuse game was a bad idea too ... and look how it turned out. Unlikely, but maybe lightning will strike twice.

On the plus side what highly rated recruit wouldn't watch our team and think "I can get major minutes if I come here?"

They may think that, but Diallo still chose to ride the pine at Kansas, instead of coming here (I can't include Briscoe, because he gets 30 minutes a night, even at Kentucky).

Honestly, don't you realize competing against Kentucky or Kansas is a huge uphill battle, and what else could we have done there (or here). Keeping them away from a game? Not publishing the final score?

It was somewhat of a tounge-in-cheek response. Of course, we can't compete with those guys. That's why I actually encouraged Lavin to get out of the Briscoe recruitment a month before the announcement, I knew we had no shot. Had no problem with Mullin going after Diallo because he just needed to take what was avaliable.

As for Sunday, just don't get killed out there (ie, lose by 40), and it should be no harm, no foul. But, I still think, if Mullin wants to really sell his vision of the program to recruits, letting them come to practice is the best way to do that RIGHT NOW. The style we are playing in games, is not really going to be our style in future years.

Not only can we compete against Kentucky and Kansas, we did compete against them for Briscoe and Diallo. Of course we lost, but we were right there at the end. Also we beat out some pretty damn good programs for Yakwe. As beast said, right now its going to be an uphill battle anytime you're going up against those schools, but Slice and Matt didn't come here expecting to play second fiddle to anyone in the recruiting arena. As time goes on, I expect we'll win our share of recruiting battles against the big boys.

You can't hide where we are at right now. (You think the recruits don't know this already?). It's about playing time , the system your running and building relationships with the staff. Not too mention playing in MSG. It's great sign we are involved with quite a few. Better days ahead!

Enjoyed the perspective here, PSimmons, RMNorth, Monte...and others
Chris Mullin laid out a plan to succeed - he and his staff came for that sole reason: 20 win seasons, top 10-20 program, NCAA noise
HOWEVER
That was & is their long term plan...
Coach Mullin in the short term
promised - no not Ws - but
A TEAM THAT PLAYS HARD WITH PLAYERS IN GOOD SHAPE WITH A " GOOD ATTITUDE" ATMOSPHERE AND RECRUITING LOCAL STARS AS WITH Mr. PONDS...

I think he's succeeded in his short term goals and we have every reason to believe he'll succeed in his long term goals as well!

All the best

More St. John's visitors Sunday: Mamadou Doucoure, Boubacar Diakite, Bryce Wills an Aidan Igiehon. #sjubb

Alkins too obviously

The present for St. John’s may be bleak, but the future appears to be bright.

Already off to a very strong start with its 2016 recruiting class, St. John’s is hosting a big fish this weekend: five-star Brooklyn guard Rawle Alkins. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard is taking an official visit to the Queens schools – his first of five official visits – and will be in attendance Sunday at the Garden for the Red Storm’s clash with No. 6 Villanova.

And he won’t be the only one. The Johnnies will host a number of elite local prospects. They include four-star Thomas Jefferson guard Shamorie Ponds, who has signed with the Red Storm; top junior target Jordan Tucker of Archbishop Stepinac and his talented teammate, sophomore guard Aundre Hyatt; St. Raymond junior duo Isaiah Washington and Sidney Wilson; and Iona Prep sophomore Bryce Wills. Also in attendance will be: Our Savior New American (L.I.) duo Boubacar Diakite and Mamadou Doucoure, Che Evans of Maryland and Lawrence Woodmere Academy’s Aidan Igiehon.

Ponds and JUCO star Bashir Ahmed of The Bronx are the two current members of the St. John’s 2016 recruiting class. German forward Richard Freudenberg is expected to make his decision soon, and St. John’s is thought to be in strong position. And then there is Alkins, who attends Word of God Academy (NC) after a dominant prep career at Christ the King, and fellow five-star stud Thon Maker, who recently visited the Johnnies.

Both are being actively recruited by a number of national powerhouses, such as Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky. But St. John’s, led by assistant coaches Matt Abdelmassih and Barry “Slice” Rohrssen, are clearly in the mix.

The recruiting class offers coach Chris Mullin a chance for a quick turnaround with St. John’s at 7-14 and 0-8 in the Big East in his first season.

Coach Mullin may have to sit on the scorers table to give one of these guys a seat at the game

Have we ever hosted as many prospects at a game? Ever?

Very impressive and just what fans of the program want to see

What if they all say OK coach we want to play at SJU. We have precious few schollies to give over the next few years. :)

That would be a nice problem to have, wouldn't it?
