Norvel Pelle, the onetime St. John’s signee who is now being compared to Kevin Durant by his brother, visited Iona for two days this week but remains uncommitted.

The 7-foot Pelle visited Iona Monday and Tuesday and would be arguably their most highly touted player ever should he choose the Gaels.

“He’s definitely worked on a lot of skill-sets that we were focusing a lot on film, dribbling the basketball, shooting and playing more like a guard,” Rambo Rasheed, Pelle’s older brother, told SNY.tv Wednesday by phone. “So he looks way more like a guard now. Comparing more him toward a ‘KD’ instead of a ‘KG [Kevin Garnett],’ you know?”

If Pelle were to choose Iona, one league source said, “He would be the best player in MAAC history.”

Rasheed said West Virginia, Arkansas, Fresno State and “a few other schools” were in the mix but no other visits have yet been set.

Still, the Iona visit with head coach Tim Cluess and associate head coach Jared Grasso made an impression.

“We’re still trying to figure out what’s going on after this, but the visit went well,” Rasheed said.

“They said they want him to come in and be the face of Iona as well as possibly being able to get out of here in one year [to the NBA]. He could be, if not the best player in the nation, definitely the top three or top five.”

Rasheed said his brother was on track to becoming academically eligible.

So now, Norvel is the next Kevin Durant, has the skillsets to nail pull up 3s and should be a one-and-done to the NBA and the Top 3-5 players in the nation according to the credible source of his very own brother.

He'd be the best player in MAAC history. Better than Scott Machado. Better than Momo Jones. The best.

Not enough laughing smilies to show my true feelings on this. >-)

I wonder what happens when he gets homesick his 2nd day on campus..

This is a disaster waiting to happen.

If I was Zags I never would have wrote that piece. I cringed at every other sentence.

Are these people serious?

Not interested in him. Was done with him awhile ago

Has zagoria ever heard of Jeff Ruland?

Best in MAAC history. Isn't Marist in the MAAC? Wouldn't that mean Norvell would have to be better than Rik Smits? Iona's Jeff Ruland? Or Ohio U's "Shaq of the MAAC" Gary Trent?

Gimme a freaking break.

Hey why bother going to school at all? Someone that good must surely be able so secure a million dollar Euro contract for a year! Or since his class graduated last year, just sign with the D-League. The next Durant should be able to rip those bozos for 40+ a game and score an immediate call-up! But I'm afraid he'd find he's light years from being the next Jamario Moon, not the next Durant....

Practice post moves, drop steps, jump hooks etc you are 7feet, no need for taking perimeter jumpers. I wish him well and would of loved to see him at STJ but it does not sound like he has his head on straight basketball wise

Just curious, I know those guys ended up being good players but were they highly recruited? I think on one of the services, Norvel was in the top 20. Physically, not mentally.

Jeff Ruland turned down UCLA and North Carolina for Iona.

 or gary springer.

I was crushed when he picked Iona over us coming out of Benjamin Franklin (teammates included Kenny Hutchinson, Richie Adams & Walter Berry). He was one helluva player -- won the Haggerty Award as a freshman -- until his knees gave out prematurely.

Wasn't Pelle crying and complaining every night about being so far from home when he was in Philly? He knows Iona is nowhere near Los Angeles, right?

Wanna mix that salt with a little vinegar before you pour it on my wounds??? Woulda been Ruland alongside David Greenwood for 2 years in '78 and '79, then anchoring the '80 title game team in the middle (we made it to the title game against Louisville with 6'6 Mike Sanders at the center spot!). Inside out with Kiki Vandeweghe, and the Bruins hang banner 10 a decade and a half earlier!

I don't begrudge this kid. Plenty of people in all walks of life make bad decisions when they are young.. or get influenced to make bad decisions by ill-informed people. I hope he pulls his act together academically and athletically and makes it. It would be a great come-back story. I would welcome him here at our program if he wasn't a bad apple (and i have no opinion on that, i don't know much about him). If not here, then i hope he kills it wherever he ends up.

Ohio is in the MAC

Iona is in the MAAC

Probably thought it was Iowa and halfway there.

Thats why he was so pissed , and for a long time, when his coach took a hike. I think at the end they might of spoken. A healthy Jeff a monster in the league. On many nites he was anyway. You all knew that right?
