Norm Roberts Heading Back to Kansas

I went from Norm Roberts apologist to apoplectic when I learned that 6-10, 240 lb. Kyle O'Quinn played high school ball four miles from the St John's campus. That just infuriates me.

O'Quinn averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks as a senior… was a first-team All-Queens and third-team All-Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) selection… led Campus Magnet to a 24-5 record, the divisional championship and the quarterfinals of the city tournament.

His high school coach called St John's to take a look at the kid and no one followed up.

In Norm's short-sighted vision he viewed Phil Wait (Manchester, England) and Dele Coker (Nigeria), as having higher ceilings than a kid in his own backyard!

RE-FIRE NORM!!!

Just out of curioisity , how big was the kid as a HS Senior

We all need to focus on that half full glass we are drinking from now which will be full to the brim in a couple of weeks!

And how good was he? No one recruited Kyle O'Quinn. Not Norm but also not Rutgers or SHU. Not Hofstra, Fordham, Iona, Stony Brook or St Francis. And the kid put up 5.3/3.4 as a frosh in the MEAC. He wouldn't have even played as a frosh in the BE. No one knew what he'd become. There's a few players like this every year so if this is what moved you from apologist to apoplectic you simply weren't paying attention to bigger issues during Norm's tenure.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who was wondering how long it would take for FranWho? to show his superhuman grasp of the obvious with a suitably infantile statement. If you had 6 hours and 37 minutes you're a winner.

You're right, he was awesome.

So I ask you all, should we be surprised he has reading comprehension issues as well?

Maybe next time you can help me with the big words Mr. Norm Roberts apologist.

Yes, I apologize for saying Norm was not cut out to be coach of St Johns. I do not, however, apologize for being mature enough to get over it.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

So what, in 30 years we might hire Norm's kid unless you keep whining like a child told it's time to go to bed? Norm was not a good coach, everyone gets it; some got it quicker than others. He also was/is a good man - some will NEVER get the difference.

I'm pretty sure he was 6'10". Like Logen stated nobody recruited him. He ended up at Norfolk State.

If there was one thing Norm was not remiss on it was active recruiting.. He was tireless, he just didn't have the goods.

I am not whining like a child, just stating the facts. He was and I am sure still is a terrible coach. But yet, people on this board keep creating new posts about him. As for Norm being a "great guy," to tell you the truth, I met him a couple of times and I did not come away with that impression at all. Yet, I have said nothing about his character because for the most part it is difficult to get a read on someone when you only meet him briefly on a few occasions. His record as a coach however, speaks for itself, and the manner in which he somehow recruited a class with 9 or 10 guys all graduated at once, putting us in a deep hole for last season, is just another indication that the man had absolutely now clue what he was doing. He set St. John's basketball back for probably a decade, but yet many here give him a pass because he was a "nice guy," while at the same time, ripping Jarvis, who actually accomplished some things on the court, to shreds. But that's ok, because according to those people, he was a jerk.

I for one am sick of hearing about Norm and would not post another word about him if people would agree to do the same, and stop creating new posts about him. Here's an idea, create a separate forum dedicated entirely to Norm, so that all the Norm lovers can post about him until their hearts are content, and people who wish to move forward won't have to see his name mentioned here anymore. I think there are plenty of people who would sign up for that.

I'm not surprised that Norm missed on this guy. Hell, Campus Magnet (aka Andrew Jackson HS) is around the corner from Springfield Gardens HS, their arch rival. Surely Norm would take a look at a big guy with some upside,
kind of give a break to a local. .......Well what do you expect from the coach who looked at Jimmy Fredette at a HS game and didn't offer. If you can't recognize pure shooters what can you recognize.

Are you sure bobre didn't wite that post for you? The (il)logic has him written all over it. Here's a tip - if you want to move on, move on, don't respond and then everyone will know you don't want to talk Norm anymore. Posting about him gives one the impression you have something to offer, which obviously you don't - his record as a coach stands on it's own. The psychological effect he had on you and others is very interesting however..............

He was around 6'8" 220 as a senior.

No school offered Kyle O'Quinn a scholarship until late in the spring. He was planning on going to Prep School and even played in some Spring AAU tournaments. Finally, Norfolk State offered him a scholarship and he accepted. It is a shame that people will use anything to disparage Norm Roberts. Get a life, it's over. We have a new coach let's concentrate on the present.
