No More Hungry Student Athletes

Strange I took it as "I just got back to my room and smoked up with my friends no I dont have any money to satisfy my Munchies.": Why should he be any different than most college students in the dorm.

Because MOST students don't make millions for their university. So yes, UConn basketball players do deserve more but more importantly, they deserve their economic freedom. Shabazz deserves the right to be able to accept endorsement deals from whomever he chooses and to sign an agent while in college. No one is harmed by either of these things.

HHHMMMM I think you have a bee up your bonnet. I was referring to most kids getting high, like my son, and nothing to do the unfairness of the NCAA system, As to your comments agents and endorsement deals will just accelerate the corruption of the NCAA system and the destruction of college basketball and football as we know it. I make no judgements if this is good or bad just observations and predictions. Lets play some scenarios out here, high school-er signs an agent agent negotiates with schools during recruiting holds out for a personal suite, escalade, and a guaranteed 30 mins a game for 3 years. Kid endorses Duke while he attending NC because they paid him 100k. Kid comes in and endorses Billy Widgets a fictional product but gets paid 250k for a roadside sign. Agent tells kid not to play in the tournament becuase he has a phantom twinge in his hammy, may effect his draft value. Kid gets a 100k bonus to play. Then just wait till the Govt gets involved and people start getting thrown into jail for non payment of taxes. If nothing else may drive us back to baseball.

Now that new york is going to have medical marijuana with as bad as our team shoots we could probably get them approved on the basis of having glaucoma and not being able to see the hoop. More food for athletes satisfies the munchies.

This could be a big recruiting tool for us

And if Napier had simply said "I deserve the ability to cash in on my brand while in college," then that would have been an honest statement, on a topic that many reasonable people are debating right now.

But, of course, such a statement would not have effectively portrayed him as a "victim." So instead, he chose to make a very inflammatory statement -- "I often go to bed starving" --which was blatantly misleading.

(Edit: sorry for the double post, not sure why that happened.)

I don't think it was at all an exaggeration. It was previously stated in this thread that UConn dining facilities in which athletes can get their included meals closed at like 8:30pm. I think we can all safely say from our times in college that we were all often hungry for one reason or another after dinner and late at night. And most of us on here didn't have the metabolism of an elite athlete.

And as for johnsilva's slippery slope and doomsday arguments, there would be obviously be regulations as to what can be endorsed. For instance, if a kid went to Duke (Nike school) he wouldn't be able to accept money from adidas and definitely not UNC, as your over-the-edge argument states. Oh, and if you believe kids signing pro deals will lead to "the corruption of college sports" you should already know that kids sign/are offered pro deals in baseball while in college. i.e. Amir Garrett. Somehow, when its a white-heavy sport like baseball, these types of deals aren't so "corruptive" after all. Same deal with "one and dones" in baseball, tennis, and golf. When its those athletes we dont talk about how the education system is being made a mockery by athletics.

Your argument on the Amir type situation is wrong. He is being paid by pro baseball and playing a different sport in college-basketball. He cannot play college baseball so your whole racism argument goes out the window. Sorry son. Draft rules are set by the pro leagues not college. baseball can draft out of HS but if you go to college are not eligible for draft until after your junior year so you can easily make the argument that one year of college basketball is less onerous. But hey, all criticism of the president is racist so there is that.

Why do I think the reaction to Napier's comments would have been much different had it come from an SJU player; or anybody without Uconn on the front of their Jersey.

Nappier complained he went to bed starving a lot this season because he had no money for food.

This is such BS on Napier's behalf, I'm shocked it got the play it did. From CNN:

"UConn's student-athlete handbook lays out provisions for dining and says athletes can eat in any residence hall between 7 a.m. and 7:15 p.m.

"If you live off campus and your grant-in-aid includes meals, you may use your stipend to purchase an on-campus meal plan. ... This will entitle you to eat in any of the facilities," the handbook states (PDF).

Phil Chardis, a spokesman for UConn athletics, issued a statement to that effect, telling CNN that "Napier, like all our scholarship athletes, is provided the maximum meal plan that is allowable under NCAA rules. UConn does not have a cafeteria devoted specifically to student-athletes, but they have access to the same cafeterias which are available to all our students."

http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/07/us/ncaa-basketball-finals-shabazz-napier-hungry/

Additional note: the UConn cafeterias are all-you-can-eat. So nothing was stopping Napier from taking additional food home with him after he stuffed his face at the cafeteria.

Napier is lucky he didnt get food to eat at night. He probably would have gained weight and ended up out of shape. Of course, the way I feel about him and UCONN that would have been a good thing

What I can tell you about the UConn dining halls, having attended there, is that they indeed close around 7:30. However, they have many spots that serve as a "Grab and Go" set up late night around campus where students can get food to bring back to the dorms. I've literally never heard of anyone complaining they were going to bed early. Also, from what I remember from knowing some of the UConn players back then, they get food stipends on the road. Most times, this is way more than enough money than is needed for a meal on the road, so they can pocket much of the cash.
