No Enforcer

As I watched the game last night it was only too obvious that Louisville was scoring almost at will underneath the basket and making their layups without any fear. We need an enforcer, an air craft carrier to intimidate the opposition so that at the very least they think twice before making their shots under the basket. The only thing that came close to that was near the end of the game when Pointer put Kuric where he belonged, on the floor, in what I believe was a good foul despite the refs claim of flagrant foul. I know we have to be careful with fouls due to the thin lineup but there needs to be some presence underneath. We need to play what traditionally has been known as BE basketball. Maybe we can follow the policy of the Georgetown teams of the 80's who, as I once heard Mullin say, had all five players foul at the same time as the refs could only call one :)

Agree. Also a big Centerwould.give us rebounds and have teams adjust their shots helping. to bring their shooting .% .DOWN. That said we lost by 15 last .night.but look how we shot the ball we shoot our ususal 45 to 46% for the game.we win Desperate in need of that outside great shooter who can hit that 3. at 40% Look that the shots we had and missed No excuses if we shot the ball better we win Our kids I believe were better but couldnt shoot as well Also we never break the zone by dribble penetration creating 2 defenders to pick up the penetrator so we can dish and get a layup. Do not see us beating players off the dribble which we are capable of doing but. guess the zone d we play hurts that aspect Like to see u.s m to m more but to do that we need a big .center

You are right on. Right now, only Harrison and Pointer are playing BE basketball. Harkless is way too passive on both ends of the floor and Greene is in over his head right now. To me, GG is the biggest disappointment, he has no physical presence and IMO doesn't play especially hard. I understand that it is difficult to play when you have to avoid fouls and he doesn't have the most experience to start with but I am still waiting to see him sprint the floor hard when switching ends. These guys should stare at tapes of Pointer and understand it all starts with great effort, he manages to play hard, impact the game with his hustle and athleticism and still stay out of foul trouble. I agree the flagrant call was a little lame; it looked a lot worse than it was because he swung his arm and made contact with the Louisville players neck.

Harkless was certainly playing BE basketball when he went for 32 against Providence. I think alot of people think he is passive due to his court demeanor.

I agree re: GG- thought he was going have a much bigger impact.

He is who he is. He can be almost dominant against teams without a legitimate inside presence, but remember he was never supposed to be that kind of intimidating presence underneath. Pelle was supposed to be that guy but we all know how that worked out.

As far as Moe is concerned he had a bad night. Kids' just a frosh and we're criticizing him because he had an off game? He'll bounce back and make you all eat your words.

Everybody should get off Greene's back, he's been thrust into a position because Nuri punked out. We're going to have to watch Phil grow as the season progresses because there is no alternative. Stith's overmatched whenever he's out there and although DLo may get more ballhandling resposibility, Greene's still gonna be out there for major minutes.

No, I think he is passive because that's the way he plays. Believe me, I am not knocking him, he is a terrific talent, he is just not an aggressive player meaning he doesn't go out and impact the game by his playing style but in a game where the flow is trending towards him he can easily become the best player on the court.

Unfortunately we will have to do "our time" (literally and figuratively) this year. . .It'll pay dividends in the future.

I have no doubt that he will develop the inate ability to sense when he needs to assert himself. . .unfair to expect that it will happen overnight. The 1st step is recognizing and acknowledging it -- which he did last game. So, it will happen over time.

I gave no indication I expected anything to happen overnight, I understand and stated in another thread that he is a freshman and will and should develop at his own speed. This thread concerns SJU today and I am commenting on his current play. I am rooting like crazy for Harkless and all the SJU players and I am not knocking the kid in any way but right now his playing style is not conducive to consistent success in this very aggressive league.

I think we may have strayed off the facts. I think pending the future and new recruits who will replenish the roster, they simply have to play a little rougher as a team by banging the opposition around a little more despite the need to avoid fouls

We'll be just fine. Time, "ticka, ticka, ticka ticka, timing" * and timing will bring good stuff in the months ahead

all the best

* I forget the circa 1960s author ("timing brought me to you" - I bet Coach Lavin has sung this one in his
shower... :cheer: him to SJU and SJU to him not including the fine staff - yes indeed, timing)

its funny, last night i saw Mo sweating when he took a foul shot and was thinking that it was the first time i remember seeing him sweat. whenever i would see a closeup of him he always looked like he just came of the bench

Never saw Chris sweat much either, what's your point?
