NFL Name Change

So the NFL team in Washington is finally changing their clearly racist name (approximately 25 years behind the curve). They could have been creative and kept the name, but changed the logo to a red bliss potato - Go Spuds! Instead of waving the Terrible Towel, they could wave the Terrible Tuber.

Seriously though, any speculation on a new name? It will probably be something lame like the Representatives or Lobbyists. Or Senators (First in war, first in peace, and last in NFC East). We already know that “Bullets” is off the table. And “Orange Men” as well.

Your predictions?

Haven't followed it a lot but I keep seeing Warrios and Redtails as the clubhouse leaders.

How is the name racist?

I believe Fred Smoot came up with the name Red Wolves which has been trending amongst fans heavily on social media. I actually think it sounds good and cool stuff could be done with logos etc. curious to see direction they will go.

It’s not a disparaging name.

Warriors makes sense. It would allow them to retain some version of the Indian mascot/persona if they really, really wanted to.

Will be interesting to see what they choose.

And if an Indian calls you whitey, or pale face?

Clearly not you, but even you might if it was up on a billboard in your neighborhood, or if it was on TV for 4 hours a week, or maybe if half your town owned a bit of clothing celebrating your new 'nickname".

You don't care because the days you and yours were stigmatized have long passed. 'You' are now privy to good places to live, go to good schools, get good jobs, and have full access to the ballot box.
On top of all THAT--it seems 'fair' we not disparage their heritage.

That said, I'd love for St. John's to jettison the 'Red Storm' name. How about the St. John's Vikings?
Think, 'they'd object?

If you are so sensitive to the name, why are you on a site called Redmen.com?

Because we understand that the name "Redmen" wasn't related to Indians. It was chosen because all the school's athletes wore red shirts as uniforms.
You understand the difference between calling a team of men "Redmen" for wearing the same red uniform, vs calling a team "Redskins" with an icon featuring a minority with red skin who rarely, if ever, would have the opportunity to play on that team...don't you?

I have heard the origin you relate, but I also remember seeing a cigar store Indian (Black Jack) and an Indian mascot at BB games.

Well, it's the only game in town, lol.
But truly, not ALL 'Indian' names are offensive, imo.
I never thought 'Redmen' by itself was offensive. I've always thought we could've changed the 'mascot'--and kept the 'name'.

Yup. The Indian mascot was adopted in the 1960's. A few decades later it was disposed of because it was finally understood how insulting it was to Indians, who had nothing to do with the name, or the school.

You could ask Paul to change the domain name for this site to RedStorm.com, but I think that one is already spoken for. On the plus side...Redskins.com is likely available soon, and for a song.

OK, first, the term Redskin was originally adopted as the name for an Indian Scalp, taken by force and then sold as a pelt. Fun story, eh?

In the years since it has become a pejorative term primarily used by racists to describe Indians in a derogatory manner.

It is the Native American version of the N word in many people's minds on both sides of the debate.

Not quite the same as generic terms like indians, Braves or Chiefs nor of names that were chosen to honor specific native american's like Blackhawks. Not that I'm defending any or all of those, but simply explaining why this particular term is and has been for decades most offensive. Much in the same way that Redmen was used in relation to the native american community but with a much more disgusting origin story.

The Indian mascot was around since the late 40's. The term redmen was never meant to be insulting or racist. In sports American Indians were viewed as warriors and proud. It was used in reverence to our indigenous peoples.
It wasn't even thought of as offensive until the myopic intelligentsia of the 90's thought they needed to guide American society out of the age of darkness by using racism as their shaming curriculum.
That these shit stirrers are still with us and have infected every aspect of society is why everyone is a target for something that never had to do with the crime they accuse you of.
Using racism as a weapon is like using Communist in the 50's.
Get on board......but this ain't no peace train.
