Newsday's Long Island All-Decade boys basketball players

Wennington spent four seasons at LuHi, right?

I have to assume we'll see Kenny Wood and Kyle Ivey-Jones in the next release.

Dave Mascia and Derek Brown depending on how they split the decades.

But I guess they could all get cut since it seems like it's not just high school accomplishments.
Yes on Wennington.

McKoy was a dominant high school player, considered one of the best in the country. Although he wasn’t dominant at SJU he was an integral part of successful NCAA teams. It’s crazy to me that he wasn’t included.

Maybe I’m biased because I held him to 32 points once (while scoring 6.)

Newsday's All-Decade boys basketball players: The 1950s
NBA, NFL and MLB Hall of Famers are among the Island's best high school hoops players of the 1950s.

Newsday will do one of these for seven decades on boys basketball (they are also doing girls for five decades). The decisions on selections of players were made based on the totality of their careers, not just their high school accomplishments.

The 1950s

Some familiar names but at least two for other sports. The article includes their bios.

Players
Joe Blocker, Hempstead High School
Jim Brown, Manhasset High School
Larry Brown, Long Beach High School
Mike Cingiser, West Hempstead High School
Connie Dierking, Valley Stream Central
George Emma, Freeport High School
Reggie Giddens, Oyster Bay High School
Art Heyman, Oceanside High School
Bill Thiebem, Sayville High School
Carl Yastrzemski, Bridgehampton High School

Coach
Dick Crowley, Oyster Bay High School
I don’t think it’s Reggie, it’s Richard Giddens

You could be right but the article says “Reggie”.

Reggie Giddens, Oyster Bay

A superb all-around player who led the Baymen to three consecutive Nassau titles in 1950, '51 and '52. A two-time first-team All-County basketball player who also was a standout in football, baseball and track.

Newsday’s Long Island All-Decade boys basketball players: The 1980s

This is Part 4 of Newsday’s look back at Long Island’s best basketball players for each decade, a series that will take you through seven decades for the boys and five decades for the girls.

According to Newsday “The 1980s produced some of the best boys basketball players to come off Long Island — high school stars, college stars and professional stars. Five of the 10 players wound up in the NBA.” Three Johnnies and two other Big East players made the cut. I included the Johnnies Bios. The other bios are contained in the article.

Players
Kenny Atkinson, St. Anthony’s HS

Matt Brust, Babylon HS
The physical 6-4 guard/forward was a two-time Newsday All-Long Island selection. He went to the University of North Carolina and transferred to St. John’s, where he had a solid three-year career.

Billy Donovan, St. Agnes HS

Tom Gugliotta, Whitman HS

Andre Hawkins, Malverne HS

Kyle Ivey-Jones, Hempstead HS

Shelton Jones, Amityville HS
A 6-9 point guard who was Amityville’s version of Magic Johnson, he had uncanny ballhandling skills for a player of his size. The Newsday first-team All-Long Island pick was the state Player of the Year in 1984. He starred for St. John’s and played for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs and Golden State in the NBA.

Tim Kempton, St. Dominic HS

Bill Wennington, LI Lutheran HS

A 7-foot Canadian import who was the main reason Lutheran was ranked among the top high school teams in the country. He was the state Player of the Year. He played in the 1985 NCAA Final Four for St. John’s and was a three-time NBA champion with the Bulls. He spent 15 years in the NBA.

Kenny Wood, East Hampton HS

Coach
Ted Adams Hempstead HA

Totally forgot about Kempton and Gugs.

Glad Kyle Ivey-Jones made it though. That guy was a beast and a flat-out winner.

I imagine Zendon will be on next release. Wally and Hodgson too.

And Hopson who I just found out passed away in 2020.

A lot of big time talent there and how lame is it that we only got one of them and he wasn’t very good for us.

Well great to see Antoine Agudio is on this team to make up for his dad Alex being left off the 80's team. Alex was NYS player of the year in 1982. I think overall the teams were skewed by players success after High School.

I remember thinking Diakhate was going to be a beast in college. His host family was in my old neighborhood in Elmont and a buddy of mine would joke with the kid to go to St. John's every time he saw him walking by.

Played against Brian Ehlers and Gary Williams many times. Played against Zendon and Sczerbiak once each. Played against Bobby Hodgson a handful of times. Sczerbiak was a dead eye shot back then. He dropped 39 on us at Draddy Gym in summer of ‘94. He was skinny as a rail (just like I was back then unfortunately), he really filled out a few years later. Williams was just an absolute beast. He was a man as a teenager. We lost to Bay Shore, something crazy, like 110-98 in OT my junior year and he had like 3 or 4 dunks in that game I’d never seen in front of my face before.

Not on the list…played against Vasil Evtimov and Drew Nicholas each once. Just hated walking into that gym. Mike James and Oliver Hinckson in some summer league games. Ed Brown once or twice. Those summer league games and the camp I went to upstate had a bunch of D1 guys but these are the ones I remember the most.

A guy not on the list who was impressive was Kareem Farmer, he had some handle and could drive with impunity. I guess when you got a beast like Williams and a shooter like Ehlers (his brother wasn’t bad either) to dish off to, that doesn’t hurt either.

Zendon went for 36 and 21 against us, he had a good PG too but I don’t remember his name, but we only lost to them by 5 or 7, it was close.

Gotta say, have to give a shout to Hodgson. I know he wasn’t great at Rutgers but that dude was a coach’s son for sure. He could play all 5 positions and he was good at all of them. We played Floyd both years I started but he was even better on his summer team.

Another name you might know is Barry Baker. He was our starting PG my senior year. He was our 8th-grade starting PG and we made it to the County Finals that year and lost at Stony Brook to eventual state champs, Northport. They knocked us out in double OT my junior year too in the semis. lol I hate those guys.
