New Zach B. Article

Knight, why don’t you give us your list of Potential Coaches who are real ? You seem to infer you know who can contribute more to our Program than Mullin . Please tell us . Lovett ? He made his choices to leave after the injury .

Sly-Why the edge in your post?
Mike Rice has been mentioned. Has Lovett made an announcement?

Another great post from you , Beastie... good to see the push back to the naysayers . Too many on here , have no idea what Mullin and Richmond contribute to this Program but, think they have the answers . It is laughable to read some of their comments and so negative too !

They would never allow LoVett back even if he wanted to.

I disagree . All 3 were on Lavin’s radar . Mussini, Freudenberg and Lovett . Go back to recruiting posts from those years . Mullin locked up Ponds . Doubtful Steve would have gotten Shamorie . Lavin missed on nearly every local player that should have been on his team . Carrington , Whitehead , Delgado , Rodriguez., Powell . Instead , we got head Cases Jordan and Obepka . Area HS Coaches commented they never saw Lavin in their Gyms . The UCLA rap on Lavin proved to be true .. They hated him !

He missed on Carrington big time.

I do not fault him for whitehead and Rodriguez as that was a packaged deal with Tiny Morton.

His resume attached :)

I believe he will turn it around. SJU has all the potential & the right pieces

All of a sudden Lavin couldn't recruit? Seton Hall made at least one shady hire to bring in a top player and who knows what else. HS coaches complained that Lavin wasn't in their gyms. So Mullin goes and gives them all props and the HS coaches still come up soft. F them.

I think Mullin will succeed. Yes, it's his fault he wasn't able to stop the mass exodus that killed the program. Mussini, Freud, Williams and Ellison weren't big game changers...but with four decent bodies, we may have won a few of the games (six) we lost by fewer than seven points. Lovett is hurt. Maybe he has Derrick Rose syndrome (if it hurts I won't play) which makes him very afraid to kill any chance he has of making decent pro money. I've spoken to agents who say this isn't uncommon.

Matt is bringing decent players who have flaws and who are overhyped on these boards until the balls start bouncing. He really has to do better. I get the sense he's trying. Looie was a lazy recruiter who told his assistants he wants one NBA first round draft pick a year. That's how you make the post-season year in and year out. Maybe Ponds, with another year, can be that guy. There's no one else like that on the horizon. I thought having two HOFers would attract elite players. It was too early to do St Jean a favor when someone more experienced would have helped.

If we have another season like this one, I'll be lobbying to leave the Big East for a lesser conference. We've been an embarrassment for way too long. URI plays one ranked team all year...so they can blow by their schedule. Now they're ranked. Maybe we should emulate them.

When you think back, it's amazing how lucky Looie was with his system that was built around one star player. I can't recall an injury to anyone significant, and also don't remember his stars ever fouling out or, even worse, dropping out.

how is gempesaw or oliva to blame for not supporting mullin? that is out of left field and ridiculous. they should have to tell mullin how to coach

Dude, please can it with your Lavin agenda. How did Lavin miss out on Powell? Enlighten us with your "knowledge" of the situation. Whitehead and Rodriguez, and, in some ways, Carrington (he might be the only one where you could even possibly chastise Lavin) was via Tiny Morton. Delgado was via Oliver Antigua. Known as being hand-delivered due to Kevin Willard giving them assistant coaching jobs.

I don't have a problem with taking chances on Jordan or even Obekpa. I bet you wasn't saying anything when they both were helping St. John's win games. Lavin's overall record (regular season and postseason) speaks for itself. What's Mullin's record as a coach? In three years, he has a worst record than Norm Roberts. That's saying something, if you ask me. I got news for you, as Mullin is known to be a bit lethargic.

You just recklessly spout off foolishness. Silly. Now, please give me something logical or factual, as I've heard enough of your rhetorical crapola.

By the way, learn how to use paragraphs.

Paultzman and others , while some of the fandom on here have inexplicably gone to the Dark Side and abandoned Mullin and his Coaches , others of your opinion have remained faithful , to a large extent . Zach’s column addresses the poor results , which pains and frustrates us all, because our B.B. program has fallen so deeply in less than 20 Years. Let me make a few comments . First , absent the PC and DePaul games , our outmanned and outgunned team has been very competitive in every game . Some right down to the wire . So , those who want to put this Program into the Norm or , even Lavin category , are way off . Next ,a relatively amateur group of posters began the Mullin never Coaching chorus , even before Muliin’s Press Conference was over ! While the negativers have trumped this as a material fact for Under Achiviment , it has limited validity . Mullin and Richmond are HOF Players . Mullin has been a GM and Team Executive in the NBA for many years . He knows the game , if you dispute that , you are denying many credentials he has that are facts ! Mullin has played for and been around , Lou C, Don Nelson, Larry Bird, Mike Montgomery , Chuck Daley, and , numerous others . All with impeccable pedigrees . Even , if he was fast asleep , he would have absorbed some of the experience of those great Coaches as part of his resume . The CYO or Little League B.B. gurus on here are making way too much of Mullin not Coaching before . It’s ridiculous ! Would they have been happier if he had Coached as someone’s Assistant before he got this job , like Norm ? Norm worked for Self at Tulsa, Illinois and Kansas , did it help him ? Hah . Larry Bird , never Coached a game before taking the Pacers to the NBA finals . Neither did Mark Jackson before taking the Warriors job . Third, what is this site obsession with Mike Rice as the necessary x and o piece missing? Do we really want someone on our Staff Fired for abusive behavior against his players ? I think not ! Lastly , as Zach rightly mentions and quotes from a BE Opponent Coach , Mullin built this Year’s team around a 3 Guard Offense that featured Ponds , Simon and LoVett. All capable of bringing explosive offensive fire power to the game . Lovett’s injury and leaving the team and school , was a dagger of insurmountable adversity . Even with him , we were projected as a .500 team and a 9-9 Record . Owing to the Team’s weakness in not getting a bona fide Post Player as a Recruit or 5 th year Player . Maybe Mullin takes heat for that or , was it Matt A failing ? Team defections ? Freudenberg was a Lavin recruit , held onto by Mullin . He did not have any BE caliber skills . He would have never played . Willams helped last year as a sub , a role he might have played this year but, we had Clark coming in and besides , Williams was often injured and not able to complete a full season . His dismissal from Nevada, for whatever reasons , indicate maybe we were well rid of him ? Many of our naysayers hated Mussini and for reasons only they harbored , wanted him gone . Despite Mussini doing Yeoman service in Mullin’s first year , while playing out of position at PG . Last year with Ponds and LoVett here , he got major minutes as a off the bench catalyst and shot 42 percent from 3 Pt land . 51 for 156 or close to that . And, he was a major catalyst in several games , scoring double figures in more than a few games . Yes , it was likely he would have had his role shortened with Simon here but, impugning his heart and shooting ability is another amateur observation . Many liked to get on Mussini for the lack of his one on one defense . But, isn’t Ponds equally weak as a on ball defender ? I think Mussini ‘s shooting made up for a lot of his weaknesses . We sure could have used him after LoVett went down . I do believe , both Mullin and Richmond likely do a great job in practice as they coach these players . But, none of our players remotely has the full game skills of these 2 guys . Slice ? Does anyone really know the full story of his leaving so unceremoniously ? Was it his failure to get the 5 Star Recruit ? Was it a personality conflict ? And , was he really a x and o guy himself ? Was he that successful at Manhattan ? I don’t recall . So , despite all the losses , by all standards this team is not a joke but, more a team with dome roster weaknesses and a player injury that could not be overcome !

Keen analysis, Sly. Thanks.

The article is fair. However, (and unfortunately) we are where we are. Instead of complaining here is what I think needs to happen.

1- We are in no position for another "re-set". Let's not add to the noise. The Mullin experiment needs to work. Him and MA have put together a very quality recruiting class, transfer etc. If Mullin goes so would that class. That cannot happen. We are in position to rise from the dead next season. Sooo..
2- At the end of the season Anton Goff and CM need to come together and figure out who he needs (not wants) on the staff. Nothing should be off limits. Is Richmond pulling his weight? This is a business relationship not a friendship. What about assistants? Do we need a viable Assistant Head Coach? Etc. They need to agree on a plan. Do we agree we have the right structure to succeed. Goff needs to take ownership as a strong AD.
3- They then need to make the changes and communicate what is expected to everyone in the Program. Define roles and responsibilities and most importantly start working to keep next years team together as one.

Thank you , Chicago ..its only my opinion . . Others, of course , have theirs .. Regretably , some can only reply with insults to those not sharing their views .

No! Because what you said wasn't logical or factual. Don't feign the victim when your bunk is critiqued with lots of reasoning and facts. Don't say things that goes against logic or are flat out false without refutation. Simple.

If I’m being very honest, half the reason I was excited about Coach coming back to his alma mater is because I’m an alum that was influenced to come here by watching this team in the mid 80s (which used to be the whole point of college sports - attracting students, not just generating enormous revenue streams). The other half, and the reason I remain patient and hope we surround him with a better college staff, is that I believe Mullin WANTS to be here. I’m sure that if he had Hoiberg’s success that he’d be happy to go back to the NBA, but I’m ok with that. It’s losing a good hire to a middle of the pack ACC team or worse that would bother me. I’d hate for our program to be a stepping stone to another college for someone who would only take this job to pad his resume. I agree that Coach has flaws, but to assume it’s a damaged hire and we need (another) reset is a bridge too far for me right now, even after games that have made me question my sanity. Let’s get real college assistants and show Coach that this game and the NBA are not the same (I’ve watched a number of his interviews and I think he hates the idea that the NBA can’t prepare you for this level, especially in recruitment, and believe his over confidence in this issue is problematic). We got some kids coming next year and have the two most important positions on the staff manned by alumnae. Let’s make this work, quiting and resetting is too millennial, especially from such an old posting site ?

My issue is with the guys who Mullin and staff let walk leaving us with such a short bench. If we had Sima, Williams and Ellison this year we would be 15-5 instead of 10-10.

I think our program is tweekable and not in need of a major recast.

I seem to remember Paultzman cautioning us a while back that we were a work in progress and not near a finished product.
I guess he was right. Patience is difficult, especially when we see other programs advancing more quickly than SJU. The cavalry is coming next year.

No coach can force a kid to play for him. IF someone wants to transfer and you don't release him, word gets around that a coach is vindictive.
