I don’t think anyone is going to come out and say the Mets will be reducing payroll. However, they have clearly and will avoid long term commitments to middle aged pitchers. Sure we’ll add a second tier starter. That’s what Stearns does. So where are we adding?The Mets drew 600,000 more fans this year. In the event they don’t make the playoffs those fans may be lost next season. I would be shocked if payroll is reduced.
Outfield? Benge will battle for a spot. Infield? Jett Williams will battle for a spot. Bullpen? Unless Diaz opts out we will do the Stearns thing. Project here, project there.
IF the re sign Pete payroll might increase on its own. If not expect Clifford and Vientos to battle for 1B. That would reduce payroll further.
I am going off Cohen saying spending at this level is “not ideal”. This is the model. I guess we will see how flexible he is. I think a relatively quiet winter is ahead. Maybe trade route is the way they go.
