Should have been moved to the parking lot.
Which free agent starter last year are you wishing we signed? The guy out for the year with Tommy John, or the guy with almost a 6 ERA in the second half of the year? The signing of Montas is an absolute disaster. David Stearns, against all logic at the time, RAN out and locked up Frankie Montas. Many of us shook our heads but the company line was “trust in Stearns” because of the success the prior season. Well, this one and a few others blew up right in our faces. Just think next season $17m more and a full season of this guy tossing BP. Let that sink in.
Personally, I don’t want to hear anymore about the magical pitching lab. If people were touting that last season then we can call bullshit on this years results. We literally had to cover the back end of the bullpen with trades. Clay Holmes looks tired and shot. Sean Manaea? He’s barely pitched but has been bad not being able to protect a 5-0 lead? Senga who we “built” depth so we can only pitch him every SIX days is melting like butter on a humid August night. He walks the park instead of challenging hitters.
I could go on but why bother. The BIGGEST issue is we did not want to sign the really talented, big pitchers. Too many suspects. It’s not working. I assume next season becomes a bunch of Sproat, Scott, McClean, Tong etc. Those are hopes and dreams and I don’t see the current philosophy changing anytime soon.
Also happy/relieved it was early in the game while we were ahead too.Wow, Pete sets the record. What a moment. Needed this as a fan, cause it’s been all bad lately
Weren’t Senga and Manaea supposed to be our trading deadline “acquisitions”?We needed a starting pitcher at the deadline. It was fairly obvious. Still a head scratcher to me. You knew Holmes was gonna need to go to the pen eventually
It’s frustrating because he got the double play ball but we weren’t in proper position. Also don’t get why Soto was warmed up to not pitch to Olson.C’mon DK. You knew it was coming.
Even with Manaea and Senga in the rotation, it was still a need.Weren’t Senga and Manaea supposed to be our trading deadline “acquisitions”?
Pirates didn’t want to trade him apparently. There were just not any really available. It’s why I don’t really blame Stearns for any of this. If Manaea and Senga were pitching as expected, we’d be in far better shape.Even with Manaea and Senga in the rotation, it was still a need.
Canning’s Achilles exploded, Montas sucks, Blackburn sucks, and Holmes has pitched a lot of innings and it always should’ve been in the plans to put him in the pen. I don’t know why we didn’t go hard for someone like Mitch Keller or something. Not a star, but a solid, reliable option for the rotation
