Not signing Quintana will turn out to be a mistake. The guy was clutch, and knows how to pitch. He’s miles better than either Blackburn or Canning,
Jose Quintana signed with Milwaukee for the same money the Mets gave Griffin Canning. Only time will tell if this is the right use of resources. Canning was literally one of the worst pitchers in MLB last year.
The Mets were successful with Manaea, Severino and Quintana. We rightfully give Stearns and Hefner credit for getting the best out of them. It’s a bit odd given the success Quintana had last season and the experience he has over a solid career.
This is a very accurate summation of the recent history and current state of affairs for the pitching staff. The Mets were successful with Manaea, Severino and Quintana. We rightfully give Stearns and Hefner credit for getting the best out of them.
However, it is also fair to point out that only Manaea was retained and he’s hurt. We also had failures like Adrian Houser (remember how he was going to eat innings?). Plenty of Julio Teherans, and bullpen misses like Michael Tonkin, Jake Diekman, Jorge Lopez (worst teammate ever glove throwing guy). Our Staff was also giving up the 3rd most WALKS in baseball. I think the CWS and LAA squeaked by us. (Not good company) We swallowed a number of flop contracts along the way and ultimately lost because our pitching was nowhere good enough vs. LAD.
These are types of years where with high expectations I’d worry about us falling flat on our face, but things feel…different. I’m not wild about our starting rotation and Alvy’s injury is a bummer, but this has a special vibes feel to it. Kinda like ‘86, dare I say.Petey gonna hit 50. Soto will have an OPS well over 1.000. Lindor will go 30-30 and lead the league in hits. Senga will be an ace.
Spring rings eternal.
I think what’s different is the Mets had a pretty good team last year. Then they went out and signed a young in his prime superstar. We didn’t sign Jason Bay, Bobby Bonilla or Michael Cuddyer here. Look it’s baseball lots of things can spin out of control. Just look at the Bronx. Injuries or guys just not performing. Shit happens. However, Alvy will be back and they have lots to build around for several years to come. Soto and Lindor are going to be here awhile. These are types of years where with high expectations I’d worry about us falling flat on our face, but things feel…different. Manaea was a calculated risk, and I understand why Stearns pulled the trigger. However, we should get used to injuries like this one from him. Remember that when he went to Driveline (I believe) they specifically emulated Chris Sale’s motion to get more velocity. And you see what Chris Sale is like. He never pitches… The Braves were fighting for their lives last year in the last week of the regular season and the playoffs, and their supposed ace Chris Sale never took the mound.
Frankie Montana was a bad bet. He’s always hurt.
I love the Clay Holmes signing. That could be the saving grace for the staff.
As I’ve said plenty of times, Quintana should have been signed immediately when Montas went down. As we now know, we could have gotten him cheap.
All that being said, I think our bullpen looks stronger than in years past and that will help a lot. Some excellent pick-ups, and a good call re-signing Stanek. Unlike Maton, he doesn’t pitch scared and he loves the big moments.
