New York Mets 2025 Season

I am not going to go crazy over Quintana because the front office did a very good job of finding quality throughout the season to fill the pitching staff.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt, because Sterns believes in how he selects pitchers and Hefner’s ability to work with those pitchers/reclamation projects.

I agree about giving the benefit of the doubt, but the fact remains that we now have two of the worst starting pitchers in the league in our starting rotation.

Jose Quintana signed with Milwaukee for the same money the Mets gave Griffin Canning. Only time will tell if this is the right use of resources. Canning was literally one of the worst pitchers in MLB last year.

It's very unlikely Canning can match Quintana if both stay healthy.

It’s a bit odd given the success Quintana had last season and the experience he has over a solid career.
The Mets were successful with Manaea, Severino and Quintana. We rightfully give Stearns and Hefner credit for getting the best out of them.

However, it is also fair to point out that only Manaea was retained and he’s hurt. We also had failures like Adrian Houser (remember how he was going to eat innings?). Plenty of Julio Teherans, and bullpen misses like Michael Tonkin, Jake Diekman, Jorge Lopez (worst teammate ever glove throwing guy). Our Staff was also giving up the 3rd most WALKS in baseball. I think the CWS and LAA squeaked by us. (Not good company) We swallowed a number of flop contracts along the way and ultimately lost because our pitching was nowhere good enough vs. LAD.

Clay Holmes looked good today going 3.2 innings with 8 K's and Diaz improved after last time but still was scary with 2BB's and 3 K's in his one inning (scary but typical)

This is a very accurate summation of the recent history and current state of affairs for the pitching staff.

Manaea was a calculated risk, and I understand why Stearns pulled the trigger. However, we should get used to injuries like this one from him. Remember that when he went to Driveline (I believe) they specifically emulated Chris Sale’s motion to get more velocity. And you see what Chris Sale is like. He never pitches… The Braves were fighting for their lives last year in the last week of the regular season and the playoffs, and their supposed ace Chris Sale never took the mound.

Frankie Montana was a bad bet. He’s always hurt.

I love the Clay Holmes signing. That could be the saving grace for the staff.

As I’ve said plenty of times, Quintana should have been signed immediately when Montas went down. As we now know, we could have gotten him cheap.

All that being said, I think our bullpen looks stronger than in years past and that will help a lot. Some excellent pick-ups, and a good call re-signing Stanek. Unlike Maton, he doesn’t pitch scared and he loves the big moments.

This is something to watch for. It’s called “The Pursuit” about the signing of Juan Soto. Looks interesting. 2 part series. Anything to sell tickets.

Petey gonna hit 50. Soto will have an OPS well over 1.000. Lindor will go 30-30 and lead the league in hits. Senga will be an ace.

Spring rings eternal.
These are types of years where with high expectations I’d worry about us falling flat on our face, but things feel…different. I’m not wild about our starting rotation and Alvy’s injury is a bummer, but this has a special vibes feel to it. Kinda like ‘86, dare I say.

I think what’s different is the Mets had a pretty good team last year. Then they went out and signed a young in his prime superstar. We didn’t sign Jason Bay, Bobby Bonilla or Michael Cuddyer here. Look it’s baseball lots of things can spin out of control. Just look at the Bronx. Injuries or guys just not performing. Shit happens. However, Alvy will be back and they have lots to build around for several years to come. Soto and Lindor are going to be here awhile.

The Holmes signing has potential to be absolutely amazing. He's looked great and he's making much less than Montas -- who I didn't have a problem with as a #4 for 2 years.

When healthy, Senga is a mid-level ace. Manaea and Peterson healthy are exception #2 and #3 for anyone. If Holme can jump into that category it almost doesn't matter who #5 and #6 are.

I do think Stearns messed up with Canning over Quintana.

Francisco Lindor on Luis Angel Acuna. “I think he plays a little bored in spring training”.

Hopefully Lindor sending a message to Acuna. This is disappointing for a guy who has not established himself.

Mets tie Yanks 6-6, as Nimmo hits 3 run homer in the ninth. Pitched mostly guys who will be going down. Regulars played half game at most except Nimmo who played entire game as he is recovering from injury and needs at bats, etc. Nimmo looked good and has 7 hits in last 3 games. On to Houston to open season and then Miami. Good to be scheduled in warm climates rather than NY in March.

Ok fellow St. John’s/Mets fans. Tedious ST is finally over. Time for some pre-season predictions.

I think Mets win 95 games and end up just behind Atlanta for the first wildcard. I do expect them neck and neck throughout the season Braves,Mets,Phillies.

Miscellaneous predictions.
Mets will add Sproat as a starter right after the AS break and trade for another significant starter at the deadline. Ronny Mauricio will be called up at some point and have an impact with his bat. Jeff McNeil will be traded. Pete Alonso will hit 40HRs. Soto will 35 HRs but hit .295 with 110rbi.

Anyone else care to guess?
