New Big East vs Old Big East

I can't believe this topic continues....We need some games.

Holiday Tournament:
Participants: SJU, Fordham, LaSalle, Albany, Columbia, St. Francis, Hofstra & Sacred Heart.

The Classic:
Participants: SJU, Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, Uconn, Rutgers, Syracuse, & West Virginia.

Which tournament would raise the profile of SJU the most?

Which tournament would raise the profile of SJU's basketball team the most?

Which tournament are you most likely to buy the ticket package for?

Which tournament will generate the biggest profit?

I think our scheduling has been fine. We don't need any more games to raise our profile. Building a winner is all that counts. The New Big East does a fine job in early season and conference season. The last bastion is NCAA tourney success which we still haven't had.

Unfortunately I don't think that tourney success will come this year. Marquette has the talent to do something. Xavier too. Not many ores just yet. I think our league is getting there. SJU will help push that over next few years.

For those that are worried about recruits being "stolen" by playing teams that participated in the old Big East.

Why did we play Syracuse a few days ago?

Isn't there a risk that SJU's "must have" recruits will see a game on TV or visit a school they heard about on the internet? Maybe the school's coach heard about the recruit and the coach initiates communication.

Going to be fun playing Fordham (uh-oh), Hofstra, Iona, Sacred Heart, Wagner, NJIT Columbia and Manhattan....But wait, then those schools will poach our "must have" recruits.

I got it, don't play anybody.

OR

Just have an exceptional program. A program that kids want to play for.

We were posting about a Tourny involving BE teams that left and those that stayed which IMHO would be a terrible idea for the reasons stated in opposition and more. We were not posting about not playing the local schools or a regional rival like Syracuse or UConn (I would love to get them back on the schedule). You brought that up and rather sarcastically. You are comparing apples and oranges.

Excuse me, but Syracuse and UCONN are two of the most prominent Big East teams that left if I am not mistaken.

I don't understand the point you are making. As stated, I don't have a problem playing a Regional rival like Syracuse or UConn. What I have a problem with is a Big East Classic Tournament being held pitting former BE teams who left against those who stayed, period. There is no benefit to the BE for such a classic or us as both have moved on. That makes us seem like we need the publicity and the BE is longing for the old days. Neither is the case.

A regional rivalry Home and Home against Cuse and UConn is not the same thing.

The Holiday Tournament is a joke and MSG and the ECAC is not even trying to do anything about it. To me it is a waste so that I am not even going to debate.

As for the "BE Classic", you are talking about a tournament where each team will play one game against a former foe at MSG. Hell, we can play anyone in one game. A home and home series vs. Duke, UCLA or UConn (again I don't mind playing them in a home and home series as they are a national program and close by rival) can do the same thing. This would also provide a bigger share of the profit instead of some nostalgic one game tournament pitting BE teams who left and those who stayed in which the profit is shared by all of the teams (four or more) involved along with MSG.

Now tell me, what raises our profile more, a single game a year in a home and home series against a UCLA, Duke, UConn (you can play two a year one at home and one on the road and switch the following year) or some tourny single game against RUkidding or WVa. Even if it was UConn, a multi home and home series focusing on the rivalry would be better than playing them in a one game tourny which makes it seem like the BE is pinning for the old days when the league has moved on just fine.
