New Big East vs Old Big East

The Big East is currently 6-1 against the defectors. Rutgers being the whipping boy at 0-3, Miami holding the only win over Butler.

Big East Classic (who I define as STJ, Georgetown, Prov, Seton Hall, and Nova) are 5-0 with 2 wins over Syracuse 2 over Rutgers and 1 against BC.

Just a bit of fun for your Tuesday.

How 'bout this for a holiday tournament? Have MSG host a tournament with a bunch of the traitors playing the good guys? A little nostalgia... It certainly wouldn't have the same flavor, but it might be fun for the fans. Invite Uconn, Syracuse, BC, Miami, West Virginia Rutgers, Pittsburgh and any others that I might have forgotten about in for little Big East beat down.

A Big East heritage classic, would be a pretty neat idea.

Cool idea but I couldn't see the Big East going for it. Big East is playing incredibly well right now yet you still have people claiming the Big East is dead and reminiscing of the old days. A tournament like that would just be inviting people to maintain that narrative.

I could see maybe a northeast tournament (DC and up). It would be pretty similar but without the Big East is broken up narrative. Mostly the same teams, just add a couple like Maryland and forget about teams like Miami.

Absolutely not, no reason to help their recruiting in NYC. They pillaged enough over the years while we had less than great staffs. Screw them all. We are now in the drivers seat and recruiting and performance will only improve. No help for anyone there are enough good teams that don't need to have a foot in recruiting in our home town that we can play.

Already gave you a "Thank You" but want to add that it's an emphatic thank you.

For those that are worried about recruits being "stolen" by playing teams that participated in the old Big East.

Why did we play Syracuse a few days ago?

Isn't there a risk that SJU's "must have" recruits will see a game on TV or visit a school they heard about on the internet? Maybe the school's coach heard about the recruit and the coach initiates communication.

Going to be fun playing Fordham (uh-oh), Hofstra, Iona, Sacred Heart, Wagner, NJIT Columbia and Manhattan....But wait, then those schools will poach our "must have" recruits.

I got it, don't play anybody.

OR

Just have an exceptional program. A program that kids want to play for.

If we want to be an elite program, we need to play everyone, whether it is Syracuse, UCONN, or Louisville. Schools are going to recruit New York regardless. UCLA is playing North Carolina at Barclay's this weekend. Utah is also playing Duke in New York.
We are in the process of building a program for longevity. We need to trust the staff to eventually have the players to make us competitive with everyone.
Playing and beating elite schools can only help us in recruiting both locally and nationally. Think our beating Syracuse last Sunday did not have an effect on any recruit that was considering both schools.

The Big East as it stands, after all the smoke has cleared is a wild success. We have a great group focused on basketball, great tv contract and as a league will only get better. It's still in its infancy and I can only see it getting stronger with a strong SJU team. At this point we should play everybody. I love Syracuse coming in and getting spanked at the garden. They aren't going to be the same when Boeheim is gone.

I will add that DePaul is a basketball disaster and that doesn't help us. They need to make wholesale changes there. I can't believe they hired a re-tread head coach.

It's not about not playing good teams. It's about not having a "nostalgia" tournament that promotes the idea that "Hey fans (including recruits), this is what the Big East was like in its glory days, but alas, those days are gone for good." We already have the BE tournament; we don't need a former-BE tournament.

Dont underestimate the effect on the BE of a great SJU program If Mullin can turn things around , we will really help the league. NYC, the media capital of the world.

I tend to agree. The OP's idea still is without merit since the schools in question have moved on from their Big East affiliation, even if some of their fans haven't, so there would be no reason to celebrate it with a tourney of this ilk.

The Big East grows stronger by a stronger St. John's team in it's #1 media market!

Agree wholeheartedly that we have a great conference as is. I wouldn't change a thing. The future kooks very bright.

The tournament isn't going to happen.
But if you want to get the northeast recruits you can't back-away from playing UCONN and Syracuse.
If you want to own this region recruiting-wise... you need to play the teams that are fighting us.
Not to mention it generates more buzz than the average game.

Florida doesn't need to play Florida State and Miami ... but they do, because otherwise they'll lose out on recruits in the state.
If we're not willing to play UCONN and Syracuse at the Garden or the Dome... NY area recruits won't be as drawn to our program. You need to play the big games.. and win them.

I also like regional rivalries, which was lost w conference reallignments. Would like us to play UCONN. I live in FL and although FSU and UF are in different conferences, their football games are a tremendous rivalry, creates a lot of buzz.

Desco, I'm fine with playing Syracuse (especially after last Sunday) and UConn, and with making the statement that we're not afraid to play anyone. In fact, I welcome it. But I want to play them as visiting ACC and AAC teams, respectively, and not as components of a "nostalgia for the old Big East" tournament.

We were posting about a Tourny involving BE teams that left and those that stayed which IMHO would be a terrible idea for the reasons stated in opposition and more. We were not posting about not playing the local schools or a regional rival like Syracuse or UConn (I would love to get them back on the schedule). You brought that up and rather sarcastically. You are comparing apples and oranges.

Excuse me, but Syracuse and UCONN are two of the most prominent Big East teams that left if I am not mistaken.
