(NCAA-WEST/Providence) #10 Arkansas, Sat., Mar. 22, 2:40p, CBS

You can always learn. But sometimes there are obstacles.

I was a pretty fair pianist in my youth. Had a natural talent for it. And as a result (and also because started very young) I never bothered with some of the discipline work like practicing scales.

Fast forward a dozen years or so and all that was really left for me to do was concert-level classical piano. Which I discovered I couldn't play because I hadn't done the work when I was young, and by then it was too late for me to break my bad habits (which nobody had corrected earlier because, well, I was good).

RJ learning how the game works and how to take advantage of the other players on the floor, make them better, let them make him better is a different challenge. But there may be an element of "I'm so good this way why do I have to do it the other way" in addition to an accrual of habits or a thought process that can be hard to break.

But he can always be a lawyer, that worked out ok for me.
You replaced the piano keyboard with the laptop keyboard as your symphonic outlet.

So many assumptions here on your part , just perhaps RP did not want to respond as there is something that has yet to become public ? And if not perhaps he did not want to respond as he did not want to publicly insult RJ ?
Our coach was not out coached at all, he was begging thé players to pass to Zuby and instead RJ was driving into traffic not looking for anyone. How is that on Coach ?
As to KR being on the bench for 22 minutes, he had 5 fouls in 16 minutes. There were no additional minutes available for him.
Snith by the way had a much better game than KR.

It’s ok to have different opinions on all the parts of yesterdays game .
It’s part of being a fan .
I saw a different game than you . No problem . The points you raised are what you saw .

You have credibility here and you are a knowledgeable fan .

I think it’s worthy of a explanation why Luis was pulled at such a critical point in the game .
Pitinio by giving a snarky answer in his presser when the questioned was posed to him , actually threw RJ under the bus . You just don’t bench your All American player , after making 2 Critical free throws in a 2 point game with 4 minutes to go

Regardless of how poorly RJ played up until then , he’s still your money player down the stretch . As Zuby is too . Zuby was missed by a lot of our guys during the game when they should have been pounding the ball into him against the foul prone Hog Biggies .

We all agree 3-17 isn’t good and RJ didn’t play his best game . Neither did Scott who was 1-10 shooting .
Disagree about Smith , he was forced to play 30 minutes and was spent with fatigue in the last 5 minutes . He missed critical free throws and committed the back breaker of a turn over by throwing a pass directly to a Arkansas player , which resulted in a score by the Hogs .

He is also not the same quality of distributor that KR is . Nor as dominant a penetrator .

As for Pitino and his 2 foul rule , even Lappas disputed it . Saying “ you have to let your 5 th Star player stay in the game as important as this game was “
5 th foul on KR was bogus and Ref should be rated down for bad call .

Cal let his big guys stay in the game with foul trouble , Rick didn’t .

Game over , Season over and long wait to next year .

It was a great year for the School and the fans , Alums , NYC , etc

I think we all feel disappointed it didn’t continue past this weekend .

Where do we go from here ? Anybody’s guess at this point .

Great analogy.
The sad part is, RJ is a great passer! Kid has had a few dimes over the past two years that had me screaming at the TV "do that more!" Especially when you have a rep like his, you can use it to your advantage in games like yesterday if you're smart. Clearly we are not there yet with RJ, but man I hope he decides to run it back one more time.

On balance I am obviously happy that Pitino is our coach. But stuff like yesterdays presser is why I can't bring myself to like him very much. Not only does he make a highly controversial ( and stupid imo) decision to keep his best player on the bench for the last 5 minutes of the game, he avoids responsibility for having to explain himself ( and questions the professionalism of a reporter to boot, just for asking the most obvious question in history). Accountability for thee but not for me apparently.
Pitino job is to win games, no more , no less. It is not to be liked by the fan base. He is winning way more than any other coach at SJu in the last 40 years, and took over a complete you know what program. He has exceeded expectations by a country mile. And I would never call his decision stupid , nor does he owe any reporter or fan any answer. Is he perfect, I am sure not, but he owes no one any answers IMHO.

Or this was the game that was waiting to happen to us all year, playing a team with very tall athletic big wings and a coach that said pack it in so they are forced to shoot threes. All the missed layups seemed to be in anticipation of a defender appearing to block the shot. Blame Brady for getting hurt and Aaron for his broken finger. Need something new to keep my mind off politics.
We could have both Brady and Glover yesterday. Both can shoot a little.

I don't disagree that Pitino had a bad game
I, too, would have played Ayo instead of Lefty
I also would have played Luis down the stretch
Even though he was struggling to score, he's still a better option than any alternative
I just cringe every time Luis drives into the lane where there are 2-3 guys on defense sitting there waiting for him
Once in awhile, he makes a spectacular play but most of the time, he either misses badly or turns the ball over
I don't understand why he continued to do that all season long
Don't get me wrong - RJ had a tremendous season but every players has his warts
In those situations, he should pull up for a mid range jumper - something he's pretty good at converting
Agree with all and perhaps play a little zone and protect Kadary and bother Arkansas

And we play zone, which we haven’t all year in games because our defense is first rate, and one of Ark’s several talented wings or guards knocks a few down. Imagine the second guessing there?

This game was following the script of the entire season. Problem was the conductor’s best instrumentalist spent the last 7 minutes fouled out after missing too much time already. And the second best piece we have in those spots, who feeds off the first, had a bad performance to the point where the conductor was so frustrated he thought other guys could pull it out, which they almost did.

That’s the game. All the other stuff is the normal Monday Morning QB that happens after a bad loss.

Read a few pages here today no issues with anything at all that was said. Came back, somehow sent myself to the first page of a thread where the hot topic was the possibility of getting Mike Rice to come to SJU as an assistant coach.

Thought about THAT and concluded - “I’m good.”

I disagree. Bobby Knight didn’t get fired for losing games. He threw a chair out on rhe court. Pitinos first job is to win games and then represent the school with integrity. People tolerate a lot more when you win and I am happier now with our coach then I have been in a long time. He does not owe any reporter the reason for the benching but he does not have immunity from all actions. With that I think we have another nice season next year with Coach P and hope he is here for a long time.

Bobby Knight was fired for putting his hands around Neil Reed’s neck in practice. That was many many years after the chair incident and after the garbage can incident. Then I believe, after he had been told that there would be no more transgressions tolerated, was still exceptionally rude to a student and had another outburst. It was many years ago so I apologise if my facts are not perfect.
I never said Pitino has immunity For his actions so I am not sure why you are raising same.
But I will repeat again and stick to my convictions his job is to win games first and foremost. And by the way things have been much quieter with this coach than they were with any of FF, Jarvis, Lavin, Mullin and CMA.
Integrity is a word of the past in college bball.
Just ask Will Wade, Bruce Pearl, Danny Hurley ( caught swearing on camera after today’s loss ) and a whole long list of others, including …..

This tournament has been so boring the most exciting event is the benching of RJ. We would all live to get the whole story from Pitino but that’s not going to happen. Did RJ say something to Pitino or the asst coaches that influenced his decision?
Perhaps a better question is what happened to the remaining SJU players?
With the exception of Zuby they seemed incapable of throwing the ball in the ocean.

Didn’t age well
As I said shortly thereafter, I assumed we would hit layups. I did not envision shooting 28% or something for the game. If we got to 30% we would have won.

The game went just fine, despite the adversity of Kadary foul trouble. Except we just hit no shots at all and compounded that by not hitting free throws either.

A perfect crap storm.

But yes, did not age well.

Kadary = great passer. RJ= Mediocre passer. Especially when he’s playing Hero Ball and driving into the mouth of 3 defenders
