NBA Insanity

I like the offseason the Knicks had. They'll be fun to watch, and should give us some playoff games. But unless the Spurs, who now have a nice big 4 of Leonard, Aldridge, Gasol, and Parker, can beat the Warriors in the playoffs, we are looking at 82 games and a playoffs even though we already know the finals is going to be same teams.

Delly gets 40 mill and Jennings gets 5?? Good bit of business by the knicks if you ask me!

Personally I think it is crazy but fantastic for the schools going after good four year players. This is only going to spur kids leaving after 1 or 2 seasons whom the nba will draft on potential. A perfect example would be Malachi Richardson of SU who left after one season. And it was not a Carmelo season.
If we keep recruiting top 50 players players who can rarely leave before playing 3 seasons we will be in great shape.

Agree RN, but there are many factors that I am sure the staff is taking in to account before deciding to go after a potential one-and-done kid. For instance, a kid's character. A high character kid is far more likely to fit in with an established team, even if for just one year. The state of the program/team at any given time is another factor. As you know, I was in favor of bringing on Rawle for a variety of reasons. IE Talent, PR, local kid, etc. This in spite of the fact that many were concerned that he would come with baggage. Besides, from having watched him quite a bit, I am not as convinced as others that he is a near sure-fire one-and-done. Sometimes the state of the program will necessitate passing on a potential one and done kid, if there is concern that he may disrupt the chemistry on a veteran team. As Markredman said, sometimes you bring on a kid because you think he can put you over the top. Building the team around 3 and 4 year kids, supplementing them with transfers and the occasional one-and-done kid(case by case) is the right way to go IMO. That seems to be exactly what the staff is doing.

Most sure fire "one and done" kids need to use that year to showcase themselves to the NBA scouts and teams. That often translates into more selfish play to pad the stats needed to justify the move after one season and can have a negative impact upon team chemistry.

In addition, the "one and done" rule makes a mockery of the college educational experience. A kid only has to successfully complete one semester if he is certain to leave after one year. And we know what kind of "classes" such a kid is likely to take in that one semester......

For these reasons, I hope that someday, in the not too distant future, the NBA will revisit their current policy and require kids to stay in college for at least two years before being able to declare for the draft. Actually, my real preference would be to follow the NFL rule - 3 years removed from high school.

I prefer the MLB rule: Either you go right out of high school, or the 3 year rule applies. But at the end of the day, if the kid isn't remotely a student it's a completely mockery, as you said.

Linking this back to the original thread I think the MLB rule only works if there is a viable minor league system. If the NBDL becomes that then yes I agree 0 or 3 is the way to go. Then a team doesn't have to waste a roster spot on developing an 18 year old. It was worse in the day when the HS kids were eligible but there was no D League. If the D League isn't viable then I agree that you need to go to two years removed from HS. The original thread was about how much money is flying around this year and it's only going to get worse. What if some of that money was invested into properly developing and promoting the D League rather than paying some shlub 13 mill per year for 6 mins/game. Also could invest some of this extra money into lower ticket prices.

Durant headed to Golden State.

Now that Durant is gone and Westbrook might be as well in a year, I wonder if Billy Donovan wishes he had stayed in the college ranks.

BD is enjoying his time in the NBA. OKC as a city in general is a major change. It's tough to find a great neighborhood to raise a family there, and I know they struggled with where to settle down. Coaching wise he loves is, just the quality in OKC is not to die for. Many of the players and coaches all live within the same gated community well outside the city.

I think they are going to unload Westbrook by the trade deadline next season if he doesn't agree to an extension. And Donovan probably could land a great college job as soon as he throws his hat in the ring. Will be interesting to see what happens to the franchise in the next few seasons.

Helluva opener for Queens' Maurice Harkless, going for 23 and 8 in Blazers loss to Clippers. #sjubb

New Orleans sent Diallo to Development League today. He's better off getting experience at that level.
