Native American Mascots

I like what 1 college did. Changed their name from Redmen to Red Men , too bad we didn't think of that.

How would Black Men, Brown Men, Yellow Men, or White Men go over? Don't think Red Men would work especially at an institution like SJU with there history as Redmen with an Indian mascot. Just my opinion.

We were given the name redmen because we wore red. Anything is up to interpretation.the reds could be considered Indians.I think there is too much political correctness. And you are right some might consider Red Men offensive.what I don't understand is why a name like the Indians is offensive, but the name Cowboys are not. ND is called the fighting Irish ,and I don't see the Irish population in an uproar.

Washington should just change their name to the Skins and get it over with. Their fans will call them the Redskins anyway. They'll sell a whole new crop of merchandise, and even though it's a stupid name, Skins won't get mocked because everyone would know the history of the name change.

The Redskins should change their name to the Washington Warriors and leave the logo and everything else the same. The logo is not the problem. The Cleveland Indians, Chicago Blackhawks and Atlanta Braves have similar logos and nobody complains. Just change the name to the Warriors and leave everything else the same.

I hope the Redskins fight it as long as they can. The sissifcation of America could use a little slowing down.

I think they should leave the name and logo as is, except add a slogan to the bottom that reads, "Don't like our name, then don't come to our games."

People need to just grow up and get over things. We as a society have become over sensitive when it comes to matters such as these.......so we 'hurt' a couple of pple's feelings......oh well!

I actually agree with you Peanuts. I don't think the name should be changed. I think only small percentage of the Native American population find it offensive anyway. I was just expressing what I felt was the easiest way for the organization to address the name change issue with as little disruption as possible. But, I agree, society as a whole has become way to sensitive and politically correct.

So the goofy-looking, big-nosed Indian who was our mascot/logo for many years -- and who appears on this very website -- is just a figment of my imagination?

the "Indian" was a natural progression to the name which was given to the football team because of their red uniforms way back in the day. Actually named by a sports writer I believe. Probably St. John;s did not have a nickname at that time. I wonder if they did not adopt the Indian identity would they have changed the name?

Well than let's not hear anymore complaints at all based on race or ethnicity and while we're at it add on gender and sexual orientation.

On behalf of my Greek friends I hereby petition USC to drop the name Trojans and the Trojan warrior mascot. They should just change the mascot' s name to scumbag and it will not be mocked because everyone would know the history of the name change.

You're right Redken, the goofy looking big nosed Indian which we continue to use is a poor example to put up if we are, in our mascot trying to honor and exemplify the brave, noble people who came before us in our country, who as far as I know, didn't play basketball. I, for one favor a middle of the road approach. As long as we steer clear of demeaning stereotypes, I see nothing wrong with channeling the spirit of the Sioux, Cherokee, etc.

A Bruin in the house?

I was completely for keeping these names until they became too big an issue as to be a distraction and an opportunity to clog the courts when there are better things to worry about. At this juncture it is a no win situation, and eventually the Redskins will change their name. When even the President is weighing in on this subject, it's time to let it go.

The disappointing thing is that changing names of sports teams have not done a single thing to improve the outlook for native americans. Of course, if every offending sports team put slot machines in their lobbies and gave the proceeds to NA tribes, then we'd have something. I've heard though that allowing legalized gambling on sovereign land has been done to a small extent.
