Mussini's progress at PG

This season has to be tough on Mussini. He is playing out of position, he is playing an enormous amount of minutes, and there has been little success win loss wise.

My hope is that Mussini keeps his head up and develops the same way Phil Greene did.

out of position, or merely out of his league?

plays his ass off. much respect. but i'm wondering, with Ponds, LoVett, etc. soon to be on board (hopefully, never know with this program), how much court he gets. and is his deep shot as good as we think/wish it to be? 'bout 34% so far this year...

34% while being double teamed by the best defenders is pretty impressive for a freshmen logging more minutes than any player in the league

I think we've seen plenty to know that Mussini can flat out shoot. He's also shown that he can create his own shot...maybe not on a regular basis, but those crafty moves are there. His defense is what lacks the most, especially foot speed. He gets beat off the dribble often. He will get solid PT for the next 4 years, especially if he can make improvements on the defensive end of the court.

Mussini will contribute all 4 years here. Not concerned with his development. Smart player not afraid pass the ball. Can shoot too. Team needs to set picks to free him up.

Less minutes + Better looks = ?

Better surrounding players and a pg equals better looks.

He's clearly the only pure shooter on the squad right now. He's not quick enough to create his own shot. The kid is in a tough spot trying to play the point and be the top option from deep. No clean looks.

Mussini will be deadly once we have a PG that can can penetrate and dish. He will shoot 40% + from 3 next year.

i think that mussini is a pg because of his height but if he wants to be serious he needs to learn how to control the game and etc but i do love his shooting it just sucks thats hes not 6-6

The kid is a freshman. Forget about him playing out of position - he is a freshman. And as a freshman, he is doing very good. He's handled the ball much better as the season has gone on. Absolute worst case scenario I do not see him ever not playing at least 25 mpg the rest of his career at SJU. Lovett, Ponds, and fingers crossed Rawlie, if he can play like he has now, he will only get better.

I refuse to say any freshman is out of his league just for struggling his first year. Just in recent memory think of the vast improvement Phil Greene and DJ Kennedy made from year 1 to year 4. Or think of the difference Dwight Hardy had from year 1 to year 2.

It's safe to say 95% of incoming freshman have never played competition like the big east. It takes a very special player to dominate from day one.

Don't believe me ask Seton Hall, Whitehead was supposed to be one and done. He struggled last year and is finally finding out this year what it takes to be a pg in the big east. If he stays until he is a senior he could be POY.

If Lovett, Ponds, Rawle and Ahmed are on the roster and eligible next year and Mussini is getting 25+ then one of the aforementioned 4 is a bust. Yakwe will also play some 3 and there's not enough size in Lovett, Ponds and Mussini to play 3 guards very much anyway.

OK. Yes, very good point. If we get Rawle then it is most likely not probable that he averages 25 mpg w/ Ponds, Lovett, Rawle. BUT I would not think he does not play any less then them. I look forward to a year in the BE under his belt and how he progresses.

If Mussini doesn't play less than those three then they are not as good as people on this board have led me to believe they are.

With the guys we have coming in I cant see a scenario where Yakwe plays the 3. Plus I just dont see any "3" in his game.

True. The only 3 in his game is his size. But he and RF seem like they could be on the floor at the same time. Yakwe at the 3 on D, RF at the 3 on O.

Yup and with those two plus sima on the floor the staff can get very creative with zones. show a 1-3-1 perhaps with RF at the top, sima in the middle and Yakwe taking care of the baseline.

Zach B tweet;

Spoke to Sir'Dominic Pointer, D'Angelo Harrison and Phil Greene IV about trying #sjubb season. They love Mussini. Will post link soon.

Sir Dominic my favorite player of recent years, Phil # IV a close 2nd. If they say it's true, it is.
