“Mullin was happy with the Red Storm's recent hiring of Mike Anderson, who was announced as the new coach Friday after he was fired at Arkansas last month.

"He's a great selection. He's got a great track record, I got friends that know him," the Hall of Famer said. "Some of my friends who played at Arkansas know him well. He's a class guy, great fit. He'll do a good job."

Mullin holds no ill-will toward St. John's.

"That place and I go back to when I was 10 years old with coach (Lou) Carnesecca," he said. "It will continue. I met my wife there. It's beyond my playing and coaching there. It's a special place for me and always will be."

Mullin is now an ambassador for USA Basketball's 3-on-3 initiative, with the game to debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He's been associated with USA Basketball for nearly 40 years, playing on the 1984 and 1992 Olympic teams. Now he's excited to be talking up the schoolyard game that's in his blood.

"It's something we've always done in the parks and it's the core of basketball," Mullin said. "It really emphasizes the fundamentals of the game."

Mullin knew which of his three Dream Team teammates from 1992 he would want on a 3-on-3 team.

"Larry, Magic and Michael," Mullin said smiling.

Classy on the way out which is nice to see. Wish him nothing but the best. Still hands down the face of our program and greatest player we've ever had.

Chris Mullin , through his playing career and Coaching here at Alma Mater , has been a loyal son of St John’s . Always a class act , Chris took on a difficult task to rebuild a program left bare by his predecessor and brought us to a NCA A Tournament appearance . He had some ups and downs but , deserved better than the personal insults often posted here . He will always be a St John’s Legend . Ever onward , Chris .

Very nice statement by Mullin. I've been harsh on him these past few weeks, but that statement says a lot about his character. Hopefully him stepping down results in a best case scenario for everybody involved. Who knows, maybe in a couple years we'll see CM in attendance at one of our games, just like how Lavin still shows us support and has a good relationship with the fans.

Wasn't aware he is now an ambassador for USA Basketball. I'll be rooting for USA in 2020 and wish him the best.

Good for Chris. Love the guy, taking the high road. We redmen.comers should do the same. He was one of the keys to the school's high point as a player and brought us some very nice moments as a coach. Wish him nothing but the best.

I will forever believe that if we had Cragg on board when Mullin was hired and a proper oversight and structure for our basketball program, they would have convinced him to hire the right type of staff, and he would have succeeded.

Rob's point is well-taken. As a rookie coach, Mullin would have benefited immensely from working with a real AD.

Mullin's statements in that piece showed a lot of class. Good for him.

I was very happy to see such a classy piece from Chris Mullin. I think he will always be a favorite son of St. John's. A real Cass Act, that I hope has nothing but the best in the future.

I'll always revere Chris Mullin the player and recognize the great ambassador he has been and will be for St. John's well into the future.
The guy is a class act.
His coaching tenure did have some great moments.
I'll treasure them as well.
Here's to Chris.

God bless you and your family Chris.
Thanks for all you have done for the St. John’s family.
Thanks for the memories.
Precious memories.

As tough as he thought this job of head coach at SJU would be he would wish it would be that easy! I wish him all the luck in the world!

Believe it or not reading this brought a tear to my eyes. Mully will get a standing ovation if he ever visits us again. He left with a winning record and he now endorsed our new coach. All class.

Did not think you had tear ducts :)

Chris Mullin is, and will always be, in my mind, a classy gentleman and a Golden Memory for many years. He coached my son years ago at Carnesecca's Basketball Camp. The photos and memories we have are priceless. I wish him and his family well. May God Bless you and your family Chris. Be healthy and happy!

From a proud Alum!

You want to talk tears? My wife cried when she read the news but I was both stoic and relieved for Mullin. This job was not for him. Mrs. 72 was a much bigger fan than me from the very beginning because as I told some in private PMs she was friends with Mully's eldest sister as they went to school together and would correspond on FB and attended alumnae functions together.

I’m also relieved that he left on a high note. Ncaa tournament berth and all. It was the right time. It must have been tough on the ego of a competitor like him, but everybody knew that the roster wasn’t being replenished, Matt was leaving and he wasn’t a natural coach. Nobody will fault him for anything at his point and it was before it got ugly.

He’s certainly all class and I’m glad he can move past the short period of ugliness as coaching is a different world than playing, and that was especially true with Mullin. The legend didn’t ruin his legacy.

Chris is St John's. He is the best player that ever came through the program and has represented us with grace, dignity and class throughout his career. While his short lived coaching career was not as successful as everyone would have liked it to have been, he was a victim of circumstance. He took over a team that was totally void of talent. As a novice coach, he should have been given more help, support and direction. But there was nobody around to do so. Regardless, our win total improved each year and he left the program in far better shape than when he took over.

I hope that Chris remains connected to St John's. Much like Looie, he is an ambassador for our program and school. Thanks for providing us with so many wonderful memories that all of us will always cherish. Chris is a St John's legend.

Did not think you had tear ducts :)[/quote] yeah I’m going to need video evidence of 72 shedding a tear and proof he doesn’t have onions in his pockets :)
