OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Newly enshrined Hall of Famer Chris Mullin will have his No. 17 retired by the Golden State Warriors.
The ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 20, before the team hosts the Pacers. Mullin, enshrined in the Hall of Fame last month, played his first 12 seasons with Golden State, then three with Indiana before returning to the Warriors for his final season in 2000-01.
Owner Joe Lacob made the announcement Wednesday night at an event for season ticket-holders. Mullin will become the sixth player in franchise history to have his jersey number retired, joining Al Attles, Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain, Tom Meschery and Nate Thurmond.
Mullin finished with 17,911 points in 986 games.

A great, and well-deserved honor, of course. Putting it against Indiana was a smart move, too, since that was Mullin's other NBA team.

Unfortunatly, the ceremony may have to be delayed for a year because of the lockout. If they are able to salvage a 50-game season, there is no guarentee that Indiana would even come to the Bay Area, but I'm sure they would just find another date.

St J should do the same and retire the number of their all-time leading scorer!

Twenty five years ago, i wrote a long argument published in the Torch for SJU to retire Mullin's number 20. It's long overdue, but from what I hear, it may happen very soon.

Congratulations to Chris. His number 17 was chosen by him as a tribute to one of the players he modeled himself after, John Havlicek of the Celtics. Apart from his obvious professional accomplishments, he was a throwback player who moved without the ball, and was an elite passer who would always hit the open man. Imagine how he would be revered today had he been the small forward on the all-time great Knick teams of the early 70s!
