Mullen Preaches Patience / N.Y. Times
Let's face it even before the Big East SJU was the powerhouse for college BB in NYC since the time of City College, LIU and NYU was long in the past. Fordham and Manhattan were not a big deal, then when they joined lesser conferences and the Big East was so strong, SJU was supreme.

We'e got to get that feeling back. Since the Mullin days, we've only had it in fits and starts, lately very little.

It's definitely a "pro town" and a baseball-football town at that, but we can put ourselves back on the map with Ws.

Podunk outposts like Syracuse and Storrs have nothing else going on so the entire region is riveted to the big "local" sport.
I agree BJR
BTW NYU disbanded its Div 1 program in 1971 ("budget reasons" for this billion dollar university - same time I recall they disbanded ROTC, hmmm) made the final four 1945 and 1960 - star players included Dolph Schayes, Satch Sanders, Happy Hairston, Barry Kramer, Mal Graham; the 1960 team lost to Ohio State and Jerry Lucas and John Havilcek.

NYU was a powerhouse and early on CCNY and LIU too; Manhattan and Fordham used to have better squads than they have had lately.

City kids all leave for the bucolic campuses and pretty girls. Too bad; it seems NJ is producing more solid high school BB players than the City and we used to get our share of those kids, not anymore. :-(

Looking at the Top 25 in America, At least 20 teams in that list are located in "PODUNK" locales.
