Mullen Preaches Patience / N.Y. Times
et tu (Mullen) ?
When you guys first reopened registration here a mod gave me a warning for misspelling Tomas Janislonizxzwzxzzis. I think a Mullin misspelling should get a one day ban.

Great read! Made me misty. Luv Mullin’s ‘character’ and work ethic. Thanks JSJ.

Mo's work ethic is legendary, I heard stories from members of the swim team back in his day; every single time they came or went from practice, there was Chris practicing in the gym all by himself most times, all different hours of the night and day.

You must be a riot (mess) at weddings. ;) :)

After the Butler loss here in Indy, I felt it was ok to bypass watching the rest of the season and accepting that we’re a has been program. But I can’t know there’s a St. John’s men’s basketball game on and not watch it. I can count on both hands how many televised games I’ve missed since I enrolled in ‘93. I’ve never demanded a quick fix on this site, always believed that a coach needs 5 seasons to be fairly judged (why would a kid ever come if he thought the coach could be canned during his stay?) and while college sports are less recognizable than 25 years ago, I always want the team to represent the values of the school and be representative of the student body and their alum. Coming back from that disastrous losing streak to give us two 2 weeks of bliss, represents our values and embodies NY tough. No what ifs, stuff happens. Great read and thanks JSJ for the link.

Chris had his own key to the gym. and used it frequently to practice when no one else was around or he'd grab someone else to go with him to rebound.

I just finished watching "Daily News Live" on SNY. They had a discussion about whether NY is still a "Big East Town". They all admitted that it is not. Some felt the lack of stars was the biggest reason. Finally, someone said the real problem is that St. John's hasn't been good in a real, real long time. They started talking about how just a little run by the Johnnies (beating Duke and Nova) and suddenly their was a lot of interest around SJU and college basketball. They felt if we could make a run in the BE Tournament interest would grow.

Coach Mullin is right to preach patience and hard work, but next year needs to be a good year. It feels like forever and a day since we seized the opportunity to be relevant. I hope we play well this week and get the 2018/2019 season started in the right direction. I think it would mean something here in NY. Its long past the time that we start winning some games.

Critical 18-19 for sure on the court & recruiting. You want to replace departing guys like Clark, Owens & Ponds (if back) with quality additions to avoid backsliding to bottom third of BE if we indeed dance next year. Let’s get on that elusive continuity track for a change.

Although there are only 7 Division 1 basketball programs in New York City proper there are close to 40 colleges and universities in the 5 boroughs. However, the only basketball program that counts and that can attract fans to MSG is St. John's and the Big East is headquartered in Manhattan.
That said, it has been extremely shortsighted of St. John's to make the worst basketball hires in the Big East. Hopefully that carousel ends with Chris Mullin starting next season with better players and a better record. Before Chris I felt we needed someone like Chris Collins now at Northwestern but Mullin is young enough to make a name for himself in coaching. NYC is a pro town but with a dozen D1 programs in the metropolitan area, only St. John's has the potential following and conference affiliation to be relevant in NYC.

Let's face it even before the Big East SJU was the powerhouse for college BB in NYC since the time of City College, LIU and NYU was long in the past. Fordham and Manhattan were not a big deal, then when they joined lesser conferences and the Big East was so strong, SJU was supreme.

We'e got to get that feeling back. Since the Mullin days, we've only had it in fits and starts, lately very little.

It's definitely a "pro town" and a baseball-football town at that, but we can put ourselves back on the map with Ws.

Podunk outposts like Syracuse and Storrs have nothing else going on so the entire region is riveted to the big "local" sport.

I agree about recruiting. However, I have to admit (as '72 mentioned the importance of recruiting in another thread) after years of who's coming/going I will leave that up to CM and staff. Part of my frustration as a fan (and alum) is that we have too much instability or continuity as a Program. How many seasons can we go with (or at least it seems that way) 6 scholarship athletes? Sometimes I have wondered how we even scrimmage. These are certainly not new issues to this site. I guess its that time of year. Knowing we are not tourney bound but hoping (and praying) that next year is the year we turn the corner.

Yes great read AND such interesting inside information such as Tarik Owens' Dad growing up in Queens during Chris Mullin's hay day - hence the connection for this Tennessee transfer. And the myriad of ways our Coach can entice a good player to come to SJU. That recruiting connections are being re- established (which Chris Mullin promised when, April 2015, he spoke while taking the job; Chris has kept his other promises: being the best conditioned team, the hardest working which we have been this year).

And the author's prediction that St Johns can become a solid Big East program. All good and thanks again JSJ!
