I just finished watching "Daily News Live" on SNY. They had a discussion about whether NY is still a "Big East Town". They all admitted that it is not. Some felt the lack of stars was the biggest reason. Finally, someone said the real problem is that St. John's hasn't been good in a real, real long time. They started talking about how just a little run by the Johnnies (beating Duke and Nova) and suddenly their was a lot of interest around SJU and college basketball. They felt if we could make a run in the BE Tournament interest would grow.
Coach Mullin is right to preach patience and hard work, but next year needs to be a good year. It feels like forever and a day since we seized the opportunity to be relevant. I hope we play well this week and get the 2018/2019 season started in the right direction. I think it would mean something here in NY. Its long past the time that we start winning some games.
Although there are only 7 Division 1 basketball programs in New York City proper there are close to 40 colleges and universities in the 5 boroughs. However, the only basketball program that counts and that can attract fans to MSG is St. John's and the Big East is headquartered in Manhattan.
That said, it has been extremely shortsighted of St. John's to make the worst basketball hires in the Big East. Hopefully that carousel ends with Chris Mullin starting next season with better players and a better record. Before Chris I felt we needed someone like Chris Collins now at Northwestern but Mullin is young enough to make a name for himself in coaching. NYC is a pro town but with a dozen D1 programs in the metropolitan area, only St. John's has the potential following and conference affiliation to be relevant in NYC.
