Mount Rushmore 4 Favorite Johnnie’s

Favorites is a tough criteria. It isn't "best," that's a different question. It could be "favorite to watch," which has some overlap with "best." Or it could be the ones I had special affection for.

I'm going to go with the third category - not necessarily the best players, or even the ones I got the most enjoyment from watching, but still my favorites.

Marcus Hatten
Charles Minlend
Justin Simon

After that it gets tough. Billy Singleton, Tyrone Grant, Lavor Postell, Donald Emmanuel are all in the conversation.

But I think I will go with Boo Harvey for the last spot on the list.

The favorite to watch play list? Hatten is on that one also, but Sealy and Arrest are the two other no brainers for that one before it gets hard. Probably have to take Mullin over Berry but that's a close one.

1. Dick McGuire
2. Sonny Dove
3. Chris Mullin
4. Walter Berry

Panther , you and I go back to Sonny’s career at St John’s and it’s a pity that only us Seniors got to see him play .

As we both know , Sonny at 6’7” or 6 ‘8” and maybe 195 pounds often played against opposing Centers who were taller and heavier .
Didn’t seem to matter , Sonny was that good .

True story , I live in S Carolina , not far from
Savannah , Ga and I was working at a local Golf Club a few years ago and who shows up to play , is Cazzie Russell and 3 other guys

Of course , I knew right away it was Cazzie and he had a few minutes before his tee time .
We talked a little BB and I asked him , what he remembers about the Holiday Festival final Vs St John’s that we win 75-74.
Well , he says , smiling , St John’s got a few calls from those MSG Refs but, we couldn’t believe this skinny Kid Dove was kicking our Ass under the basket .”

Panther , I know we are about the same age or
Close but , how old were you , if you saw Dick MCGuire play ?
His College career is before my ability to recall .

Dick MCGuire had a great NBA career with the Knicks as a player , Scout , etc for a long time .

I like your Rushmore 4 .

I never saw him play in college only caught a few games towards the end of his professional career. I put him on the list because I was told that he was a true point guard and exceptional ball handler during his college and pro career. He won the Haggerty Award in 1944 and 1949.

Cazzie was long term coach at SCAD, a top notch art school. Also an ordained minister. On request he once sent one of my kids a great birthday card, with a note of encouragement and faith. Great player, greater man.
