I'm glad I watched this game on TV because I would have left in disgust after the first half had I wasted 2 hours of my life traveling to Carnesecca Arena.
The definition of punch-drunk : confused and unable to speak or move normally because of being punched many times in the head. : unable to think or act normally because you are very tired. That would aptly describe both the St. John's team and Chris Mullin's appearance after the first half.
St. John's gave up 35 rebounds to a glorified Catholic high school team in this mismatch of talent but at least Molloy displayed a modicum of offensive discipline in the first half while Mullin's team played ugly street ball hoisting 3's with reckless abandon and showing no interest in playing "team" ball. Mullin pulling 4 of his starters couldn't disguise his lack of inspirational coaching.
The second half was everything fans expected in the first half but I suspect that the sheer athletic superiority had more to do with the dominant play than any coaching adjustment. Still, not being able to put points on the board against D2 Molloy was painful to watch.
Contrast the scoring ability and coaching of Creighton, who have beaten two nationally ranked teams this week and it reinforces the our bubble status playing amongst upper tier D1 teams.
The bottom line is this team looks like it needs more than 2 days to prepare for the next game. A similar effort could spoil man a Thanksgiving dinner.
