Moe Harkless

uh oh....

I am really hoping we can get his services for one more year. I also think Lavin returning to the bench, and signing some solid interior players will help the cause.

He would be making a huge mistake to leave after this year. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and good people around him though so I'm not too concerned.

Let's hope the people around him understand that there is a big difference from being late 1st round this year to being top 5 next year. Sometimes people are in a hurry to get money and don't look at the big picture.

I agree with STJ11 and panther. I've heard Moe has some good people around him, and you can see he seems to have a pretty, good head on his shoulders.

I also agree that some folks are in a hurry to get those buck$ and forget the bigger picture. He could gauge himself and still return for his sophomore year. Quite frankly, I still believe he'll return for another season, but I seriously doubt we'll get more than that outta him.

If Harrison Barnes of North Carolina needed a sophomore year than so does Moe Harkless. Barnes was even better as a freshman than Moe is. Although, Barnes might have only stayed due to the NBA labor situation as many others did. All of those players will be coming out this year. It would definitely behoove Moe to stay another year.

In my mind, Harkless is the type of player that will explode onto the national scene when more skilled players are put around him. Let's face it, he is playing completely out of position right now. And while it's great to see him pulling down almost nine rebounds per game, it's clear to everybody just how dangerous he could be on the wing. With a developed handle and more consistent jumper, we're not talking about a late first or early second round pick -- we are talking about a potential lottery pick.

Just taking a look at the ESPN rankings now and Chad Ford has him ranked as the 111th best prospect in the country. Hopefully, he takes a long hard look at his game and realizes he needs to keep working on improving his game at this level. And not to boast the skills of our staff, but you have coaches who have put players in the NBA -- so they know what it takes to get there. Play your two or three years at this level -- get stronger and learn the nuances of the game before you make the jump.

There are two statements that stand out. One is accurate while the other is a wild guess.

The accurate statement:

His lack of strength does him few favors here, as he struggles to deny his man, can't easily hold position on the block, and seems to lose his focus easily. Harkless fills up the stat sheet with steals, blocks and rebounds and clearly has the physical tools to develop into a very good option down the road, but he'll need plenty of experience and good coaching before he's able to get there.

The wild guess:

Re:entering the draft--

Given .......the uncertainty surrounding Coach Steve Lavin's future with the team, that might not come as a surprise, as it doesn't appear that much will change next year in regards to the way he is utilized on the interior.

Moe is nowhere ready for the NBA (see first statement).
Lavin will be back and next year Moe will be used as a small forward if either Chris O and or Rico Gathers sign.

Agree with your assessment of the report.

He is nowhere near ready for the NBA. He isn't strong enough, and that will only come with time as his body fills out and he works in the weight room. Secondly, the report questioned the range on his shot, very valid since he will be a 3 in the NBA, and scoring down low is more difficult than in college. Third, he must improve his ballhandling, especially if he projects as a 3 in the NBA.

Bottom line - he is an NBA PROSPECT. My guess if that he does leave early, it will be after three seasons, not two. His stat line will exceed other freshmen (and even upperclassmen) largely because he is getting 36 minutes per game. While there is much to get excited about, declaring now would be a waste of his career. Love Mo as a player, but he's way not ready for a pro career, and probably won't be after a soph season. He needs too much improvement in key areas before he is NBA fodder. It's all attainable, and if he gets there, he could be remembered as one of our best players. Right now, he's simply not even close.

He is so young - why would he and his faily want him to leave early? I think this is much ado about nothing etc.

all the best

A lot of kids came back this year because of concerns over the NBA lock-out. That is why you saw kids like Barnes and UK's Jones come back.

Bottom line if a team in the lottery likes him, that will be enough. Personally, I think 1 more year would serve him well. He's still a young kid, Mo's a true fr development at St. John's with eshmen. He puts it all together next year and he could be looking at a top 5 spot in 2013. Plus, he's getting good work done with Rico & Dunlap. Rico's background at Golden St. was player development.

There are 2 things I'm sure about: Mo won't get bad advice. He's a smart kid, he's got smart people helping him. This isn't Omar Cook. The other thing is, there is no shot he's around for his junior year, so better enjoy every game we get.

Jeremy Lamb from Pukon should be a good example for Moe. Jeremy stayed an extra year and now he is projected to be in the top ten of this year's draft. It's been proven that staying two years can be great for your draft status.

Mo seems like a really intelligent kid, and from what I've read on this board and others, he has smart people around him. As good as he is already, I think they'll know that he is at least another year away. A lot of the plays he makes in the interior won't translate to the next level at this point because he needs to grow/fill-out, and his outside game, ball-handling and foul shooting all should improve before he makes the leap. I cannot wait to see what he looks like next season with a full year in the weight room and working with our fantastic staff. I could possibly see him leaving after his sophomore year if a team believes he is lotto worthy and his game continues to improve, or after his junior year for sure. Regardless, I love everything about the kid, and appreciate him being the first big time recruit to show love for the Johnnies.

I'm goin to keep saying it. Charlie V was another Nate protege and he stayed 2 yrs at Uconn. I expect the same.

Nate Blue tweeted Mo is coming back after the game today. U can take it to the bank.
