Mike Jarvis’ Tenure at StJ’s as told by Mike Jarvis

Jarvis only cared about Jarvis. He was such a self-promoter and honestly he wasn't the coach of that Elite 8 team. Artest was the coach. The players did what he said. Artest may have issues but he is truly a basketball savant. Also to say that as a coach and leader of young men to admit you can't control what his kids did off the court is disgusting. Yes you can't stop a kid from making a mistake but what you do after that mistake is what teaching is about.

Or Ernie Lorch from Riverside was the offense coach?

DA played it as he was the reason for the last St Johns resurrection. Jarvis said that he was approached about the HC job after Fraschilla was fired. He said wow they have a pretty good roster and a good incoming class. He 100% benefitted from Frashilla's team. DA did a bad job making out like it was all Jarvis' doing.

Was interesting to learn that EB and Bootsy had such issues with each other.

I haven't listened to it, but did he mention the altercation they had at halftime of the BE semi-final game against Miami. EB initially refused to come out for the second half before I believe Ron Rutledge calmed him down and talked him into it.

It was Kevin Clark as Ron Rutledge was never on Jarvis' staff.

Yeah, right. As a Red/White member I remember going to a meet and him saying 'I recruit players with character, not characters'. He also said if anybody there was involved with a car dealership he would be glad to drive one of their vehicles. He came across as an egotistical, sleazy, self promoter, and he was/is.

Actually it was the teams Priest, Fr. James Maher, who stayed in the locker room and convinced Erik to return to the court. All the coaches returned to the court at around the 8 minute mark of halftime along with support staff and managers. Dom Sciana, the teams SID ran to the bench in a panic asking where was Barkley? He was told the player had a touch of upset stomach, to throw off the scent of what really happened in the locker room. When Erik finally returned to the court, he had to have a small cut on his cheek cleaned and patched. He then sat up the bench near the coaches where he was put in at some point. AND the cut on his face WAS NOT from a punch thrown by Bootsy. A member of the coaching staff jumped between both before any punches were thrown and a piece of jewelry cut Erik’s cheek.
‘One of the great sidelights to this was the fact that SJU and Miami were assigned locker rooms directly next to each other. They could hear EVERYTHING. When the team left their locker room, Miami was already out of theirs and grouped in the hallway near the small security post waiting for SJU to go on the court first. The look in their eyes 👀 as Glover ran right at them and yelled how we were going to kick their butts the second half!

If anybody remembers the podcast they did of that team, they talked about how there fought a lot which made them tough.

I don't blame them for being worried after Glover yelled at them. They should have been.

I remember watching one of the games on TV early in Jarvis tenure and my grandfather came in the room and said "who is that" as Jarvis flashed across the screen. "That's our new coach grandpa", says I. "Ahhhhh you cant trust a man with a beard like that."

I should have known. What a trash bum is Jarvis. He ground us into dust.

Thankfully slick rick clean shaven!

He looks like the evil twin of the Progressive TV Dad commercials.

I can’t listen. He is an absolute monster. Only 22 years later with hiring of slick rick have we recovered from him.
Recovered from firing him you mean? If we kept Jarvis we would have had an exponentially better 20 years.

That was the beginning of our fans losing connection to reality. The job wasn’t coveted at that point and we didn’t have the budget or facilities to compete with A-10 schools and he was still getting commitments from highly ranked kids like Showtime and Elijah Ingram.

ESPN Documentary on the 2002 St Johns Red Storm. Available on Youtube.

Treated Donald Emanuel and Erik King like sh*t...never heard any coach, recorded on tape, berating and almost being personal about it, to those two players. Not even yelling. Just really eye opening how a coach would talk at his players.

Naaah no way was 1998 the beginning of the end. Within prior four years we had landed literal consensus number one recruit in country, zendon (probably top ten), barkley, artest, postell. We were a high quality legacy program who’s fate was not yet determined.

He was handed keys to an elite eight program. He was able to grab Omar cook (and miles) like it was nothing. Problem was over time cook/miles turned to Ingram/showtime and then to reynolds/king. It was after 5 years of Jarvis, Pittsburgh fiasco, then 6 more years of not trying under norm that did us in and where all the disadvantages you mentioned regarding budget and facilities really started to separate us from rest of pack and make job undesirable.

Now I agree it’s just about impossible for anyone not named pitino to succeed here. But that wasn’t the case in 1998.

Hopefully slick changes all that.

The Alumni Hall walls with the inside info again. It's almost like we are in the locker room for all these stories.

What did you think of Javis personally ?
