Mike Francesa: Weatherman

He's been a pompous a-hole during his whole career at WFAN
In Francesa's world, there is only one opinion - HIS
If your's should happen to differ, he'll hit that button to cut you off faster than you can say your name
He also thinks he's an expert about any topic in the world
More people are starting to realize that and are seeing him for the schmuck that he is now

Yet his ratings continue to be sky high..........

Only game in town unless you consider ESPN sports radio

Many thought ESPN would put a dent into WFAN. It didn't. Then there was Sirius. That hasn't either. Then ESPN bought and FM station. FAN went right back at em with that too.

For all the flack he takes he's still an institution in NYC.

Agree, Moose. But it sounds more and more like the bulk of his fans, just by who call in, are teenaged, testosterone fueled boys. I listen to him, but only sporadically as after about 10 minutes of his arrogance, I need to stop.

Really? You think his audience is that young? I'm considered young I guess but I thought most of his audience is 35-50 and up. Stable fan base he's had for years

Yeah he has older audience and Carton and Boomer have younger one. It is funny when Carton / Boomer fans call and prank him.

You mean like the size of one.

TXRedman, none taken, and I would align myself more with Joe Beningo...I can go on rants with the best of them after bad losses lol. I remember Beningo's Mets rant a few years ago it was priceless and so true.

In regards to Francesa there is no doubt his core audience is the 30-55 range. I used to listen to Francesa everyday going to work, during lunch breaks in high school and before class at St. John's until last year. I don't anymore. He has such a negative outlook on things and just moans and groans. His tone is so annoying and he doesn't give you any hope with NY area teams. It never ceases to amaze me how disrespectful and rude he is to his callers. Some of them wait for an hour if not more on hold just to have 15 seconds to speak and they are interrupted, muted, etc. I've even heard callers say "Hey Mike, thanks for taking the call how ya doin?" only for Francesa to respond "...what's the question?". He has gotten way too comfortable there at WFAN and takes everything for granted. I honestly think it's time for a different guy to fill his shoes. Someone with flavor, someone who is respectful to his audience like Steve Somers, Rothenberg, etc. Listening to Francesa is not fun...it's literally "I know everything and you know nothing...so worship me". I think guys my age (23-25 ish) are the absolute youngest listeners who know Francesa fairly well. Other than that his core fanbase from years ago is getting older and I think he is beginning to phase out. Give Beningo his own show BRO!

His callers certainly act that young when they call. ;-)

Sommers is respectful of the callers but his schtick gets old too. Ed Coleman and and Richard Neer are fine, but being bombastic and obnoxious is what sells.

Beningo is over the top and Carton is outrageous and sexist. I swear the fights F. and Russo had when they were together were manufactured for ratings.

F. when he is talking about something he knows, and isn’t acting like a jerk, actually can make some decent points. He is not well-rounded nor well spoken for that matter, but he is not of a low IQ.

All-in-all pretty mediocre group.

Mike is persona non grata with me for (a) reneging on his scholarship offer and (b) giving our university, his alma mater, the back of his hand. He seems to go out of his way to dis us.

Sommers drives me crazy for one reason....his voice. It is like nails on a blackboard to me. I usualy do not find him funny..and just can't get past his voice.
Beningo and Roberts are ok. Being a Jets fan, I do think that Joe goes into Same Old Jets Fan mode a little often...but I can deal with it
Boomer and Carton are strange. Normally I am ok with them. Then sometimes, Carton goes into silly mode. Making noises, talking over guests, making silly comments. It is then when the show becomes tough to listen to.
Neer, besides his obvious hatred of the Jets, is not too bad. Coleman....meh?
Actually, when Kim Jones was on over the past couple of years, it wasn't too bad.

"Same old Jets fan mode"? That's because they ARE always the "same old Jets"!

I stopped listening to him over a year ago...I just can't stand him, his disrespect for the callers and his penchant for trying to position himself as an expert on all subjects...wouldnt be surprised if he thought this morning's announcement re: the Pope was about him...

I now listen almost exclusively to Kaye and Lagreca...they respect the callers and can actually conduct an interview without trying to position themselves as the interviewer and interviewee...

Beningo cracks me up. Evan on his own I find annoying but with Beningo he's ok.

Francesa I listen to but he is so arrogant I find myself looking forward to putting some people down because I'm so bored driving home.

Carton thinks he's Howard Stern and he's no Howard. Boomer I like.

Sommers I like but something happened to his voice in the last year ( I read somewhere from some type of surgery ) and now it's a little bothersome.

Richard Neer is just too nice. Not good far radio. Kind of like that baseball guy on the weekends

Best line of the News article:

"...We hope Mike knows how to shovel snow the way he knows how to shovel . . . ah, never mind."

It's so ironic that there are only 2 sports talk radio stations in the NY metro area
Here, in South Florida (known to be a lousy sports town), we have 4 sports talk radio stations

NYC doesn't have a Jazz Station at all. It went to Country (could be wrong) and two years later became ESPN home on FM.

DOH. The former Jazz Station 101.9 is now WFAN's FM spot.

Sad that NYC does not have a single Jazz station, except one at the bottom of the FM dial that barely comes in when the sky is clear.

Don't disagree with that. I have also heard him conduct some of the best author interviews I have ever heard. Reminds me of Michael Kay in this way, I don't like Kay as either a baseball announcer or radio host but his Center Stage show is top notch IMO.

Francesa said today that the sun will rise tomorrow and that you could take that to the bank

Next week he gives his Oscar predictions

sommers not surgery, had braces put on.

How in the world can you say Francessa is not well rounded?

I remember listening to Alan Combs (yes, that Alan Combs, of Fox News and formerly of Hannoty & Combs) sign off NBC as the station left the NYC airwaves. back in 1987.

The first afternoon drive guy for WFAN was a 60 year old ascerbic supposedly big-name guy from Cleveland named Pete Franklin. He was like the Bob Grant of sports radio, insulting almost every caller, and anyoe who disagreed with him routinely got called a "sc**bag) by him, over AM airwaves no less. With a few months left on his initial 2 year deal, he saw the writing on the wall, and "retired" before he was fired, with the station hiring the much younger Mike and the Mad Dog - Francessa and Russo.

Roll this story forward almost 24 years, and the aging ascerbic know-it-all announcer is now Francessa. Not sure what his deal is, or what his ratings are, but I would guess that his reign may be over soon. The thing most fans, (including ours here at redman.com) like to think is that they know a lot about the sport they are talking about. Francessa is so dismissive, so pompous, that his banter pontificates, not engages.

Advertisers covets the free spending 18-34 segment. As Francessa's base continues to age, if he fails to attrct younger listeners, he will be history also.

As potentially dangerous as it is to tell listeners to ignore weather reports (hundreds of drivers were stranded in their cars in suffolk county) the Kramden like Francessa would have been a riot (pun intended) before Katrina in New Orleans. I stopped listening regularly years ago, and don't miss him one bit.

I have called in to the Rothenberg ESPN New York show before and he was very respectful...always started off with "Thanks for the call" in the beginning and again right before disconnecting. He made you feel like you were one of the guys in the room just talking sports with no one above you. He actually agreed with me on the point I made about the Jets too...Francesa probably would have cursed me out lol. The thing is...why bother waiting an hour plus on hold just to have Francesa call you an idiot and imply you know nothing? Some days listening to him I feel like there's nothing a caller can say that would impress him. Good points are rejected and bad points are rejected. His voice and tone are just so whiny and negative and it just brings down the mood.
