Midnight Madness

 a few quick observations:

nice crowd...the best i've seen at these events. and remember, the yankees were playing for their lives!

crowd noise? who can tell? the "music" was LOUD...and i still go to rock concerts.

i know it was a scrimmage, but i expected ole defense and what i saw was mid season big east quality hard nosed play.

some of you may not want to make a big deal about it...but obekpa's shot blocking was eye opening!!! he blocked two potential three pointers. remember last year when were were schooled out there? it's not happening this year. no way.

bourgout's three point range was all that was promised. he hit the two shots he took from the corner after obekpa threw the first back in his face.

sanchez can really run the floor and will be a big plus this year.

jakarr looked spectacular at times. when he's coached to play within the game and not to show up on the espn highlight reel he'll be an nba'er. at this point, he thinks highlight reel first.

i don't know how, but amir's game looks more solid than last year. the same with sir dominick. the guard play from d'lo and branch was ordinary.

Unlike the recent past when we often only had one or two go to guys on the floor we should always have at least three or four this year.

I know people are tempering Obekpa's importance and playing time, but I think he'll see very big minutes. If his other four teammates on the floor are more offensively minded, he will be fine on the offense end. His role will be to crash the glass, set picks and dunk put-backs and alley-oops and convert easy layups. He should be left open a lot if the opposing teams' defenders have to 'help' to defend a driving or shooting Harrison, Branch, Greene, Sampson, Bourgault etc., There is always a place for that kind of player on an offense, especially one who plays stellar defense.

Bingo! No one is saying he'll be Wilt Chamberlain, but if we have 3 or 4 players on the floor who can put points on the board, then a player like Obekpa can be beneficial. I'm assuming a couple of folks believe some are saying Obekpa is going to set college hoops on fire. Not the case. I believe he'll be very serviceable.

If he's able to score between 4-6ppg, snag 5-7 rpg, and block 2-2.5 shots per game, then he's had a stellar freshmen season. He can be a garbage man on offense and disruptive on defense, and that will more than likely be enough (even, moreso if we're winning).

Gift actually looked terrible lol just being honest. He missed almost every dunk he attempted during the line drills with no defense, and he looked like he had a ton of rust. I think the biggest standouts in the scrimmage were Balamou and Obekpa.

Only one post mentioned God's Gift. How did he look last night?

he missed a dunk and put one back in the paint. he didn't look different than last year. i should mention, christian jones did extremely well.

Not a lot of mention of Sir Dom. Thought he was great on D with 2 or 3 steals that led to run outs and dunks. In less than 10 minutes that's crazy. I think he could be a force on D this year.

Also we are super athletic and talented but we still need to mesh as a team and the newbies need to learn the defense. So I expect a few early season losses to teams we think we should beat. I also think we will see a lot more of the Sophs than some of you seem to be projecting. Deep into the season I don't expect more than 2 newbies on the floor at any one time.

Later on, if we could get to the point where Obekpa, Sanchez, Sampson, Bourgault and DLo could be on the floor together it could be amazing - cover the wings and get beat with either quickness or height in the paint, double in the paint and get killed by threes. I'm dreamin...and enjoying it.

Thanks everyone for the comments and feedback. I wasn't lucky enough to attend on Friday.

I know it doesn't mean much, but I was curious to know how the scrimmage teams were divided up.

Finally able to see the ESPN3 replay of MM today...

Surprises (for me) and observations, in no particular order:

Sir Dom looking far more confident on the offensive end than last year, and still Sir DOMINANT at the defensive end...I said last year a bigger, stronger Michael Cooper type by the time he'd done here. Didn't see anything that would change that opinion.

How quickly Amir has gotten back into "hoops mode"...also, appeared more mature than last year...

Chrisian Jones. First score of the scrimage was a no hesitation midrange jumper swished by Jones - wasn't expecting taht. Obviously watched him closely, trying to see WHAT it was that allowed him to be totally ignored in recruiting, even playing at a prominant school like IMG, where recruiters were certainly watching his ranked teammates. STILL have no clue. I had assumed that his measurements were "fudged" - that the 6'7 230 lb listing would turn out to be like 6'4 or so. But the kid's size is legit. Then I thought, well he must be slow or clumsy - but watching him on the breaks, he seemed to keep up with proven thorobreds like Dom and Amir, and his footwork in the paint, both on O and D seemed more than solid. There certainly seems no doubt about his hops. His hands appeard strong on the boards, and didn't see him fumbling any passes or catches. Even watched him close during the intros - to see how he interacted with his teammates (looking for signs of an attitude issue) - but seemed smiling, personable and popular with tje other guys. So I have no clue - except that I think he will be a significant contributor off the bench for us this year, and maybe MUCH more in the following years.

Obekpa - HAS to play 20+ minutes a game . Just HAS to. Game changer even if he never scores a point - but was pleasantly surprised that he DIDN'T appear lost at all on the offensive end. Showed decent hands catching, passed out of the post a couple times very efficiently. But his defensive speed and quickness is just amazing. Had read last night he blocked 2 three pt attempts, but had assumed they were on defensive switches where he was out on the perimeter defending - didn't realize he came from the freaking post to the corner on "help D" to block Hooper's shot! He's going to be able to control the middle in zone, and be able to hedge out to the line and still get back to defend the post in man.

Sanchez - reminded me of (guess which schools former player?) - UCLA's Tyler Honeycutt, only stronger. Honeycutt's nickname was "the toolkit" - because he carried every tool you need - quickess, speed, hands, lenght, shooting, shotblocking, passing, dribbling, vision. Couldn't tell from such a short srimmage if he's GREAT at any one thing (other than foot-to-eye dexterity!), but it's obvious he's GOOD at just about everything.

Sampson. Still need to see more of his outside game to form a really opinion. But physically, VERY reminicent of the Pre-injury Ed O'Bannon - but with a much mor out-going personality than Ed. And the POST injury Ed only managed to win an NCAA title and a Wooden Award.

Marco - Did they clone Matt Carroll?

Branch. Again, short scrimmage. But very impressed with his confidence at the point. And he IS a point guard who can score, not a scoring guard trying to play point. Made the right pass almost every atime, drove the ball when when the D gave him that. Got tot he rim pretty easily both times that occurred.

Felix - didn't see enuf to form a strong impression - other than he's obviusly fast and athletic.

Hooper - Pretty much what I remember for him from Mater Dei high school. Not fast, not overly athletic, but a zone breaker, smart player, and a guy want on the floor at the end of the game when the opponents are forced to start fouling......But I think Bourgalt is gonna be the first option for that. But with the transfer year, Marco is only in front of him for 1 season....

D'lo - looked like he was pressing a bit - trying to do too much. Seemed to loosen up and look like himself in the 2nd 6 minutes.

Gift - Same as before. Obviously still the physically strongest inside player we have - but no one really tried to muscle him in the scrimmage, so he didn't show that much. I've been higher than most on what his contribution will be, but after seeing Christian Jones tonight, gonna have to temper that. Nearly as tall, almost as heavy, and maybe close to being as physically strong, but with what looks like more mobility. As I said earlier, I was expecting Jones to be undersized compared to his "listed" measurements - but he looks to have legit Big East size, and Big East ready body. That's gonna cut into Gifts minutes, I think.

Last - wonder if there's anything to take from N'Diaye getting a couple of minutes run with the scholarship kids during the scrimmage? He's listed as a soph. A google search seems to indicate he was playing for D-2 Chestnut Hill College in Philly as a frosh last year...

I watched on ESPN3. I realize it is way early and just a short scrimmage. However, this is easily the deepest most athletic team we have seen in years. I look forward to what they can look like after serious practice time together including what should be some intense scrimmage time. Playing time will be a battle but we will have some serious options. Very exciting stuff.

Yes Jones did and appears to be the steal of the class. Obekpa looks like he'll grow into the second coming of Emeka Okafor. Jakarr is just enough out of control to keep the NBA away a year or so and that's a good thing. Amir and Dom are super lineup stuffers and Marco seems to be as advertised. Felix and Phil add a ton as well. DLo just needs to go with the flow and we'll be terrific. Lavs is going to earn his bucks figuring out how to maximize this group but the horses are certainly there.

Obekpa will be a pro in 3 years max. He has Anthony Davis-like instincts. I've just been incredibly impressed with him since we began recruiting him.

Just wait until he learns the matchup zone. From 15 feet and down, he'll have it covered both from jump shooters and interior players.

I, too, was very impressed with CO's blocking ability down low, as well as the ability to pop out and contest jumpshots out to the 3 pt. line. He was also directing guys on defense. That is impressive for a guy that hasn't played a game yet on the college level. He and Sir'Dom are gonna be scary on D. I have only heard about Jamal's defensive ability but he too will help make us tough to score on.
