Memory Lane

Loved, loved loved him too, but IMO IDT he was tall enough to play the 4 in the pros, regardless of any additional muscle or bulking...
Think there is a spot in today’s game for an undersized player that can’t shoot but embraces defending and rebounding at a the highest level. Simon, if I remember correctly, had unusually long arms like Draymond.

It’s a tough sell to kids to become that junkyard dog. His people had him go a different direction. Don’t want to derail the thread too much.

Do see the Simon comps. Luckily Mitchell is 3 inches taller so it’s easier to hide his lack of shooting.

There as literally nothing about Justin Simon that was a 4 at any level. Please stop comparing inferior prospects from past horrid regimes to CRP's rosters.

That was the minors, this is the Pros. No comparison.

Speaking of Big man on Campus, pointer was not a 4 (or 5!?) at any level but it just so happened to be the best spot for him.

And that was a great senior year success story for him. What a turnaround. My point remains, it's a whole different ballgame with Pitino in town. And even with those higher ranked guys like Pointer and Simon that we used to get under previous regimes, I've never seen such low bball IQ in my life. Probably a combo of lack of good coaching/development and the player. So glad I don't have to think about those years anymore.

In 25+ plus years of living and dying with this team, both final years of Simon and Pointer were years I thoroughly enjoyed and look back on highly.

Simon was the #30 RSCI kid in his class. He averaged 2.5 steals 7.1 rebounds and almost a block a game here and he absolutely shutdown opposing 4’s (and 1s,2s, and 3s) Pitino would have welcomed him with open arms just like he did with Mitchell.

There is nothing inferior about Simon.

He was awful. You can reminisce all you want but in reality he was overrated and uncoordinated as hell. He's what you call a high end athlete with low end coordination. He was very representative of the dogshit program that St. John's was for 20+ years between Jarvis and Pitino. He had such a hard time converting simple finishes over and over again. It happens, not everyone is skilled in that dept and he falls in that camp.

If you want to hold him in higher regard, go for it. But thankfully I have moved on from all of those shitty years.

Yeah you're a little younger so I can't blame you if that's your lens of reference. I'm 48, almost, 49, so my frame of reference was from basically the last year of Mullin through Artest and Bootsy and then 20+ years of shit and then Pitino. So I tend to block out from like 2003 to April of 2023.

Guess we watched different players.

I forgot the program struggled for many years and that Pitino is now our HC, so thx for that. Am happy you have moved on, but I’ll continue occasionally to reference past players I enjoyed, if only to annoy you. 😇

I think the more apt title would be "Delusional Homers' Revisionist History". ;)
I'm thinking you, Carmine and Larry Wright have the same fondness for chuckers and the same lack of appreciation for the other things that go into winning, team basketball. But I could be wrong. Certainly seems like the older posters (me, Paultz, NCJ, et al) have a different view. But that's what makes the world go round.
