Memory Lane

You’d be happy to hear my 12 year old son is obsessed with Kareem. That’s his favorite player of all time. He learned about him on YouTube. When he asks me who the best center of all-time is and I say Shaq, he shakes me off like a pitcher that wants to throw a fastball.
Shaq? He was all time but at least 4 or 5 centers ahead of him.

People always have opinions about these type of things, but I agree with you redmanwest and here are my four that are ahead of Shaq (who BTW was terrific too):

my four in no particular order: Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon

That would be my 4 too. And I love Shaq.

Show him the movie Airplane. He will get a kick out of the Kareem Scene.

While on the UCLA dynasty topic, more than 50 years ago Bill Walton had the greatest performance in the history of the the National title game.

He went for 44 points on 21-22 shooting with 13 boards and 7 blocks.
Also had 4 field goals disallowed because they were considered dunks (even if you dropped the ball in over the rim if you turned your palms down at all it was considered a dunk) so easily could have been 25-26 for 52 points.

Two of them could have been/ should have been Johnnies.

I loved getting my original Big East Briefs Newsletter in the mail. Plus the Publisher, Greg Shemitz ? I think it’s his name, was a great guy. I used to call him whenever I needed a recruiting update. It was so well done.
I, too, had a subscription of Big East Briefs. From '96-'98 if my memory serves me correctly. Believe it or not, I still have every subscription I ordered.

NCJ, as you no doubt have noticed, you and I agree on a lot -- and in this case I was very pleased to see two names in particular: Sonny Dove and John Warren. (Didn't see them mentioned elsewhere.) In addition, I would include the McIntyre brothers -- Kenny and Bobby -- teammates on that terrific 1964-65 NIT-winning team.
My favorite Johnny of all time was Donny Burk, who played with tremendous pride for Coach Lapchick on a team with little talent, decimated by graduation, injuries, and the point-shaving scandal of the early 60's.

My two cents on All Time Centers:

1. Bill Russell, so many Championships

2. Kareem changed the position, unreal Sky-hook

3. Wilt, could do it all, best assist man as a Center (ever)

4. Hakeem/Moses Malone (tied)

5. Shaq and Tim Duncan (tied) (much different styles, Duncan prettiest bank shot from a Center (ever)).

Honorable mention

Bill Walton but injuries derailed his career

Patrick Ewing

David Robinson

Nate Thurmond

Dave Cowens

Bob Lanier

You forgot the Captain BJR. He surely belongs up there with the last three guys on your list.

mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, ;) Willis Reed is 5.c. tied with Shaq and Duncan.

My all time personal favorite because of him, before the championships in 70-73, I rooted for those Knick teams with Dick Van Ardsdale, Howie Komives, Walt Bellamy, Willis turned the franchise around along with the replacement of Coaches and getting super scout Red Holzman as head coach.

Adding Wes Unseld and Zelmo Beatty to my Honorable Mentions.
