If we have a scholarship to "waste", how about taking a flier on some local NY/NJ kid that might not be highly touted but can shoot from the perimeter?

We redshirted Felix. We have athletes coming back next year.

How about diversifying the portfolio for a change.

While I agree with the concept I would say no, if that makes sense.

The 'flier' is going to be someone like Adonis. And we will still need Gift minutes from him next year. The Sanchez ship is the vital one. Then the Marco one I'd rather bag it until 2015.

ADR would have to play the lion's share of minutes at backup C. Which is why getting him is so crucial. I don't consider that taking a flier in the least.

I think the "plan" or "hope" is that Jones is ready to step in for Sanchez in minutes and production.

Marco's ship is the one I'm referring to. The waste ship. Build up some goodwill with a local coach on a kid who all he does is shoot.

Instead we are doing that with Lipscomb who is from GA.

Gift is playing 8 mpg this year. I'm expecting that out of an ADR type player. You expecting more?

I'd say maybe 10-12 mpg because he'd be taking Sanchez and Gift minutes.

EDIT: then again he'd be sharing those minutes with jones so eight should be right actually moose.

Yes.

Moreso out of necessity not because he'd be ready for it.

There is no backup C. None on the horizon either.

Diallo lite? He's not ready for quality minutes.

I'm amazed that '.ve NEVER seen on of our OOC opponents show up without one or two 6'9" centers that would be serviceable for us. Weaker opponents should have more trouble finding bigs than a BE team but we're always stuck playing forwards out of position ala Harkless to fill the center gap. I'd love to know where these D2/D3 teams find big guys while Lavin can't. At times I find myself thinking fondly about Sean Muto, Baldi Jasiulonis etc. as we get out-boarded by lesser teams. Norm may not have been as good as Lavin but they both suck at roster management.

I don't think he can't find bigs. He just doesn't prioritize them.

SJU simply doesn't have the history of developing bigs and sending them to the NBA. So when you're a kid getting recruiting pitches, you have nothing to lean on.

We can only hope that Obekpa's legacy changes that.

I'm far from a Lavin supporter but he did snag a kid who was the top rated "C" according to one scouting service in Norvel Pelle. It just didn't pan out.

He also snagged two of the highest rated JUCO "bigs" in Gift and Orlando.

He also snagged one of the best bigs in Obekpa who just so happened to lead the nation in shot blocks as a freshman.

And he's got SJU in position to land arguably the top 1 or 2 big in the '15 class in Cheick.

So don't bash him on his ability to get bigs because his resume' says that he has.

If you have an issue, you can talk about Lavin's development of them but like I said Obekpa can change all of that.

We have Obekpa, Sanchez, Gift, how many big men do you want?

Plus, from what I've seen, there are few "complete" big men in the college game. Bigs come in the 3 forms from what I've seen:
1) The long, athletic, but skinny guys who are usually still developing their offenisve skills. Obekpa, Anthony Davis, John Henson type

2) The well-built and skilled offensively, but undersized guys ala Randle, Dajuan Blair, Sullinger type

3) Or you get the tall skinny guys who think they're point forwards, and have neither the skill or desire to bang underneath. The kid Austin from Baylor who shot 90 3's last year comes to mind first, but there are others.

In lavins career he has also recruited Dan gadzuric and Ryan hollins, both whom have played in the NBA, to UCLA . Lavin does recruit big men he just try's to find the ones that would work in his system . We are heavily recruiting Ryan Zimmerman who's 7 foot and the #2 player in the class of 2015. I think we have a chance to get him .

Highly unlikely we get Zimmerman.

Come on delusion is such fun!

It's not very polite to annoy people with data that does not match their preconceived notions.

Yes, remember, with him the answer is "negative, what's the question"

I would not say highly unlikely . Lavin is going to recruit the very best players for the 2015 season and we will have a lot of PT time for many players. Lavin can sell the city and the garden to these kids I think we have as good as a chance as any other program in America .

We're gonna certainly be in play for some of the best in '15, as we're already in very, good shape with Diallo and Briscoe. But I'm not particularly thinking about Zimmerman, as it's doubtful we'll land him.
