Mayweather vs. McGregor

McGregor lost but he went far with the best fighter in his generation. He lost but they both won to a degree

40 year old fighter, idle for 2 years, must be dancing to the bank.

A younger, hungrier pro boxer would have rendered Macgregor unconscious in a few minutes. Floyd's age, ring rust and cautious style made him the perfect opponent that allowed Macgregor to create the illusion to non-boxing people that he was competitive. If you followed the live blogs, you would have thought Macgregor was dominating early and in the fight all the way. If I set the rules for this fight, it would be that Mayweather has 10 rounds to knock out Macgregor. If he doesn't, the eleventh round would be one minute long and under MMA rules. That would have been interesting. This, to me, was a spectacle that should not have cost a nickel.

I heard those who pd for paper view enjoyed the fight. But lets understand what happen money was the flame that triggered the encounter ,both walked away winners.
Nom sane person would have thought a fighter with totally diff skill set could not beat a fighter like Mayweather who dances and runs from his opponents most the the time experience won out. Both walk away a lot richer. But lets us not be fooled McGregor is the tougher man Mayweather could not fight him in a MMA ring McGregoe would finish him in seconds

Pay per view prices are out of control, with Mayweather vs. Pacquaio the biggest ripoff of all time. In 1975, I paid $20 to see the Thrilla in Manila in a movie theater. Maybe that's close to $100 today, but we are talking about 2 of the greatest heavyweights in history fighting the rubber match of maybe the most contested sports rivalry ever. I got my money's worth.

Yesterday was more of a sideshow than a great sporting event. While MMA fighters are incredibly tough, Mayweather has a few hundred million if not more, and all his faculties and looks. Macgregor is starting to look messed up already. Who knows what the repercussions will be years from now from the damage these guys endure. I watch some MMA, but don't like the part of a sport that lets one man pin another down and allows him pummel his opponent's head.

McGregor vs Mayweather in mma fight last about 30 seconds, that said if Mcgregor fights winner of triple G Canelo fight he's knocked out within 2rds

As you correctly stated the $ really aren't so different:

=20&year=1975

Regarding the quality, well that's where boxing is today. After the Mayweather/Pacquaio debacle they needed to gimmick up to generate any similar type audience. Both boxing and MMA seem to be hurting a bit in the present, even more so by this ridiculous matchup.

Ali v the Japanese wrestler redux

Inoki isn't a real fighter and that wasn't a real fight. This one has nothing to do with it. McGregor is a real fighter and regardless of whether overmatched, will go at Mayweather under boxing rules, and it won't be as a fake fighter like Inoki. Gotta give McGregor credit at least. Yes he's going to make huge money, but he was willing to cross the isle and fight in a purely boxing match. No boxer would do the same, except broke James Toney.

I pretty sure you could get almost any boxer to crossover to MMA to take a beating for $30+ million. If you think McGregor crossed the aisle for anything other than the money you're kidding yourself. If he thought he ever had a chance then he's not nearly as smart as I think he is.

True but those fighters who would cross over to fight a MMA champ may not box again either for awhile or permanently

If C.M.Punk survived his one MMA fight, I think a boxer with a year to train in MMA would last a few minutes before tapping out and living to talk about it. After watching the May-Mac fight a few times, I have to give Mac credit. He may have been a decent boxer if he didn't switch to MMA as a young man. Good instincts, excellent athleticism, and a lot of guts. The competitiveness of the bout showed how much ring rust and turning 40 took out of Mayweather. He chose the right opponent to go 50-0. I hope he stays retired, but that will depend on how fast he goes through the hundred mill he just made.

Definitely boxers would crossover for huge money. It's a much more dangerous proposition though. Mayweather would leave unconscious if he did that.

There is some perception out there that Mma isn't a skilled sport like boxing and that it's a bloody free-for-all. That couldn't be further from the truth. Mma just requires many more skills to dominate. One needs to be excellent at all modes of striking, high level Jiu Jitsu as well as wrestling and often judo or other skills.

I thought McGregor did a good job out there boxing. He had like 2 months to prepare for a very specific style of fighting with very specific rules. Both fighters were winners as was Mma. I'm not sure boxing's perception won too much, but Mayweather doesn't care about that. He has taxes to pay.
